Master's Singers Gather for Fifth Season
Top high school vocalists from across the nation are on the HSU campus from Jun 6 – 14 for the fifth annual Texas Baptist All-State Master’s Singers resident camp. Students have the opportunity to learn classical choral repertoire in a collegiate environment, then take the program on the road for formal performances.
Students participating in Master’s Singers have just concluded their 9th to 12 grade year and are selected for the program by audition. In only its fifth year, Master’s Singers already enjoys a national reputation; program directors have accepted participants from as far away as Atlanta, Georgia.
The camp begins with three days of intensive rehearsal on the Hardin-Simmons University campus. The students then travel and perform for the remainder of their time together. Past tours included performances in the Texas Panhandle, West Texas, the greater Houston area, and Atlanta, Georgia, for the Church Music Conference of the Southern Baptist Convention.
Last year, the Master’s Singers were featured at the Annual Summer Convention of the Texas Choral Directors Association. This year’s tour will take them to the greater Dallas area.
The eight-day experience concludes with a special concert at First Baptist Church of Abilene on Thursday, June 14 at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free, and the public is cordially invited to attend.
The Texas Baptist All-State Master’s Singers program is under the direction of Dr. Loyd F. Hawthorne, choral director at HSU. He is assisted by Mr. Jeremy Mims at the piano. Mr. Mims has just completed a master’s degree in Choral Conducting at HSU. He has accompanied the group for all five years since its inception.
