Halls Welcome HSU Family to President's Home
Students Encouraged to Participate in Homecoming Events
HOMECOMING IS OCTOBER 15 - OCTOBER 18
Built in 1971, the Hardin-Simmons President's Home is a unique feature on the campus, and certainly part of its charm.
Nestled among the West Texas mesquite and live oak trees, the regal red brick buildings, and the beautiful stained glass window of Logsdon Chapel, the home sits on the serene southeast corner of the campus.
The President's Home presents an unusual opportunity during this year's Homecoming. Dr. and Mrs. Lanny Hall will give an hour-and-a-half peek at the inside of the home they are updating.
"We are honored to live in the President's Home, and we are very happy to share our home with the campus," says Dr. Hall. The first floor of the house will be open on Saturday, October 17, from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m.
Dr. Hall says he looks forward to the many events that will make up Homecoming this year and encourages students, faculty, and staff to get involved in welcoming former students to campus.
Carol Hall echoed those sentiments, saying there are so many opportunities for everyone to get involved, among them, she offers a glass of lemonade on the patio. "It's a privilege to live on this beautiful campus," she says. "We look forward to welcoming HSU alumni, friends, faculty and staff, as well as all HSU students, into our home."
The President's Open House and other Homecoming events represent opportunities for current HSU students to connect with others who have enjoyed the HSU experience, says Dr. Hall.
"I encourage students to participate in all Homecoming activities. It's always good to see students connecting with former students as alumni share stories of their years on the Forty Acres," says Hall.
There are actually two president's homes on campus. The 1924 version was built at the corner of Hickory and Ambler during the presidency of J.D. Sandefer. President Elwin Skiles and his wife moved from the older home to the current one, built near the corner of Cedar and Ambler. Four HSU presidents have lived in the newer home, Drs. Skiles, Fletcher, Hall, and Turner.
Fittingly, the older home now houses the offices of Alumni Relations. "We are all part of the HSU family," says director, Britt Jones, whose office is working on events covering the scope of visiting alumni and their families.
Among the Homecoming activities is a cookout featuring the Cowboy Band and the Spurs dance team. The Posse Kids Corral offers arts and crafts, a jump castle and rides on the Six White Horses. The alumni-led worship service will feature representatives from each of this year's honored reunion classes.
Jones says, "We are encouraging current students to celebrate all they share in common with those who walked this campus before them."
Over the four-day event, there are some 70 activities that will take place on the campus.
