Mustangs Drop First Game of Season

Well, it sounds like for whatever reason, the Mustangs came out in the first half cold. But the second half was much better. If there is a positive here, they started the 2nd half on a 6 play drive that was capped by QB Jeremy Thompson's 64 yard run for a touchdown. Also, let's give some credit to the Mustang defense to keep them in the game. I believe this game was a useful tool to ignite the Mustangs, and I wouldn't be surprised if these two teams meet again down the road.

The Ramp Vs. The Stairs

There has been plenty of talk about renewing the old tradition at Mustang Bowl of possibly having the players walk down the ramp at the south end of Mustang Bowl. The renovation to the Bowl some time back, requires the Sweetwater players to walk down the stairs on the north end. I would love to see the old tradition of the Mustangs come down the ramp from the south for especially big games. I don't know if I can stir enough interest but here is an example of an ex-player, David Redwine (1969) that sums it up pretty well:

(62) The Ramp Vs. The Stairs

I woke up this morning realizing this was the first Saturday morning of the Texas high school football season. Times have surely changed with the kick off games with corporate sponsored events. One thing that has never changed is the excitement of the season.

I grew up in the middle of West Texas high school football. I remember being ten or eleven years old and driving from Odessa to Seminole with my dad to pick up the Denver City Mustangs on the radio. I played ball in the Odessa program until I was in the eigth grade then a year in the power house program of Don Orr in Denver City. Finally I landed in Sweetwater. What a place for high school football.

There is absolutely nothing like a Friday night game in Texas. The smell of coffee and nachos, the glare as you look up at the lights, the enthusiasum of the students and athletes. High school football is a piece of the educational experience that brings all aspects of student life together. The band, the cheerleaders, the athelets and the fans. There is no better lesson in hard work, loyalty, and team spirit.

Young men and women support each other for a common pride and goal. Coaches motivate and young people just entering adult hood learn to give their all and to respect the efforts of their piers and opponents.

Texas has been praised and attacked for it's emphisis and involvement with atheletics. As for me, I am proud of my experience with Texas high school football and I look forward to each season to go out and support my favorite teams. There is truly nothing like Texas high school football.

DEFENSE

Giles Montgomery was a force to contend with in 2003. Giles is now at TCU so the Mustang defense will take up the slack.

Go Mustangs!

Hello Sweetwater, and all Mustang fans across the country.

It's time to rev up and discuss Mustang football. My name is Lew Patton, and I will attempt to try and keep everyone current on the boys.

The most important thing for me to say is I welcome your input and would appreciate anything you say here. I could use some Mustang photos, articles, and anything you want to say as far as content goes.

Let's all band together and support the team and the city of Sweetwater. Let's have the best blog in the Big Country.

I have some neat things planned and I hope you enjoy this site and hopefully it will be fun and informative!
