Run Mustangs Run

goodrunninhorse.gif

Today, I want to talk about why Sweetwater will out gain Snyder in the rushing department Friday, which is a big indication why I feel Sweetwater will win Friday Night. Much has been said already about playing on natural grass and somehow, that's an advantage to Snyder. This is the most absurd reasoning I have heard yet. Am I supposed to believe that grass slows down people that much? Am I to think that grass slows down one team and not the other? Ridiculous!

Let's look at some tangible facts.
For all intense and purposes, Snyder has 2 running backs:
Walker with 2135 yards this season and Brown with 296.

Sweetwater has 6 runing backs:
Thompson/1132 yards, Carrillo/567 yards, Banyard/497 yards, Copeland/413 yards, Green/407 yards, Clowers/146 yards.

Logic would say the more running backs running the ball, the less likely that team gets tired.

Walker has had a great season. So have the Mustangs.
But I contend the Mustangs have fresher legs, and they will proove once again why Sweetwater will win this game, regardless of what kind of field they play on. In fact, look for Snyder to tire out first...couple that with the exceptional speed of the Mustangs, and this could be an early knockout for the red team from Sweetwater.

**Note: The backfield for the Mustangs ran the 4 X 100 Relays in track last year. They won district and regionals in track by the way....can you say "Beep Beep"?

Next up, Snyder

Horse2.gif

It comes down to Snyder...again.

Snyder is like a bad cold that won't go away.

I'm going to place some quotes here, from the Snyder Tigers on this site.
The first quote is from Snyder head coach Chad Rogers:

"We are very fortunate to beat Iowa Park," Rogers said. "They beat some high quality teams this year. We are also glad to have another shot at Sweetwater."

And I like this quote from Snyder running back Dee Walker:

"We have tons of motivation for Sweetwater next week," Walker said.

Let me just say Snyder has had a good season. They have a good team.
I mention this because I want to state some facts here.

I'm sure this entire week, Snyder will talk about revenge. That's ok, that's logical. I wonder if they remember this box score?

SNYDER 0 7 0 18 25
SWEETWATER 7 14 14 0 35

Sweetwater was ahead 35-7 in the 3rd quarter of the last game in October.
I would talk revenge too if I saw that box score again.

I mention this because I am not trying to sound rude, or disrespectful to Snyder, but the fact remains Sweetwater is much faster than Snyder, and as we have seen the Mustangs do all year, SPEED KILLS!

Sweetwater is a quicker ball club. There isn't any other way to say it. That's not to say it won't be a good ball game because it will.
Put all that speed, along with the great coaching that the Mustangs have, and there should be little doubt after Friday night why Sweetwater was the District Champions. Snyder has never ever been this far in the playoffs. That is going to be pressure in itself on Snyder. Snyder has never been this far in the playoffs...think about that for a second.

My momma always said, "be careful what you ask for, you just might get it".

Snyder, you have been wanting this game since October.

Here we are.

Magic was not in the air...

Horse_power.gif

58-20!

Sweetwater took the magic out of Glen Rose's aerial attack and ground out a serious win Friday night.

Myself, and Jerry Horton were at the game, and as I watched the Big Red machine, several adjectives came to mind as I watched the game unfold. Words like awesome offensive line, Thompson the magician, slight of hand, misdirection, precision, slick, domination.

The entire Mustang team came ready to play. It showed. And it showed big time!

Give Glen Rose some credit...
The score at half time was 42-0. They could have packed it in for the 2nd half, but they played until the end. They had much more class and sportsmanship than Lubbock Cooper. I think we should congratulate Glen Rose for a tremendous effort.

We left at the start of the 4th quarter, and as we listened to the game on the radio as we started back to Weatherford, the Glen Rose announcers were even good sports paying much tribute to the Mustangs.
They said that at the end of the game the Glen Rose team came accross the field to shake hands and congratulate the Mustangs. That is great! That's what young men are supposed to do.

I was so impressed with the Mustangs. Precision moves, speed, and totall awareness of what was going on, and just an absolute domination of a team I haven't seen like in whenever.

Let me take this opportunity to also mention our coaching staff seems to have perfect game plans for opponents. I think that is critical when you are this deep in the playoffs. It seems the Mustangs score 14 points in the first quarter before anyone has time to find a seat. That sets a very good tone.

All in all it was a great game. I guess the one word I can use as I left Brownwood was pride.

Happy Thanksgiving Mustangs!

racingbus1.jpg

Dear Mustangs...

Happy Thanksgiving, enjoy turkey day tomorrow. Lot's to be thankful for. Enjoy just a taste of turkey. Ask mom to just serve you a little taste and then save the big portion for Friday night after you get home from Brownwood and playing ball.

In fact, you can make your Thanksgiving meal a victory party Friday night after the win against Glen Rose!

I have searched all week for information about Glen Rose and can't find anything on them. They don't even have a newspaper that is on-line that I can see. But take them seriously like I know you will. Time for a business trip. You are well on your way to the latter brackets. Take it a step at a time.
I'm trying to organize my schedule so I can sneak out of the house and go to Brownwood myself....
Hope to see ya'll in person and if you hear some old man hollering for you down in the end zone, it'll be me..

Hammer time!!!!

Sweetwater 35, Lubbock Cooper 14

Be Proud...
Say it loud!!!!!!!!!

Mustangs 35
Cooper 14....

Say it again...
Say it loud!!!!!!!!!

Mustangs 35
Cooper 14......

The game was awesome!!! It isn't often you get to redeem yourselves...But the Mustangs did just that! This game was supposed to be a tough one. The Cooper team from Lubbock actually had the nerve to say in their paper they didn't think Sweetwater had changed that much...
Well, may I just repeat that score again??? 35-14 Mustangs..!!!

This game appeared to have everything. Cooper getting penalized for running into the kicker who had made the field goal? C'mon...that's just dirty.
What did the Mustangs do? They took the 3 points off the board, had a first down and scored 7 instead. It was that kind of game.

I'll be talking about this game all week, but nothing is better than redemption, payback, revenge, however you want to call it.

It's great beating a team like Lubbock Cooper. Perhaps they can work on some sportsmanship while sitting at home next week.
....35-14...35-14...

Should be a good one

It should be a good game tonight.

I see in the Lubbock paper where the Cooper team is getting ready for tonight's game saying not much has changed with the Mustang team since week 1 when Cooper defeated the Mustangs 17-14.

They make it sound as though it would have been much worse but due to some leg cramps by their team, they sort of "let up" on our boys.

The only opponent that has played both Sweetwater and Lubbock Cooper is Snyder.

Snyder defeated Lubbock Cooper 20-14.
Sweetwtaer defeated Snyder 35-25.

I guess we will all see after tonight if Mr. Langston is correct when he says that Sweetwater will "run it down our throats." But remember, speed kills. I would be watching the sweeps.

By the way, for the entire season, Sweetwater has outscored opponents 373 to 155. Sweetwater is the number one team in the big country in rushing with 3006 yards. They finished the top rushing team in probably the toughest class 3A districts in Texas.

Go Big Red!

What Cooper is saying...

Dear Mustangs....

I guess Cooper reads this blog..
Take a look at some of their comments!!

Pirates face Sweetwater in playoffs
By GEORGE WATSON
AVALANCHE-JOURNAL

What can change in a 12-week span? In the case of Cooper and Sweetwater, a lot, or very little.

Those two teams opened the 2004 football season with a 17-14 nail-biter won by the Pirates in Woodrow, a game considered by many as a possible playoff preview. Now, three months later, those predictions have come to fruition as Cooper and Sweetwater meet in a Class 3A Division II area playoff game today at 7:30 p.m. at Abilene's Shotwell Stadium.

While the schemes are largely the same as they were in the opener, not much else will be with a spot in the regional round on the line.

"We've read a little on some of the message boards that said that win over them was a fluke and they're preparing as such," Cooper linebacker Tait Langston said. "I'm sure they're looking for a little revenge on us and that gives us all the incentive to work harder and keep things going. They'll just try to ram it down our throat like last time, so I don't really know any difference in them. They'll just probably be out to get us more."

The Mustangs (9-2), who finished in a three-way, first-place tie in District 4-3A, are a little different. The offense still flows through quarterback Jeremy Thompson, who rushed for 981 yards and threw for 322 during the regular season, and running back Kendall Carrillo, who carried 62 times for 500 yards.

Those two combined for 134 rushing yards and two touchdowns against Cooper in August. Since then, role players like Joseph Banyard (48-325) and Skye Green (18-310) have been big contributors.

"They're a little more dangerous offensively than when we first saw them," Cooper coach John Windham said. "They had some younger kids and have developed them and they're looking very good on film. They look a lot faster than the last time."

Of course, the Pirates (9-2), winners of District 3-2A, won't be the only team with a different look. In the first game against Sweetwater, the Pirates lost for most of the second half starters Bradley Madison and Josh Barnett on offense and Shawn Stults on defense to leg cramps. Madison had torched the Mustangs for 109 rushing yards and a touchdown in the first half.

Madison finished the regular season with 1,172 rushing yards, Barnett had 613 receiving and 361 rushing, and quarterbacks Howell Finch and Trey Wood combined for 893 passing yards and eight touchdowns. Also, over the last few weeks, role players like Cory Cleveland (38-384) and Trace Gurss (40-313) have been big pluses.

But Windham said the biggest area of concern for his team is on defense, particularly in finding the form that helped the Pirates swarm to the football in that first meeting. That defense held Sweetwater to no first downs and 6 yards total offense in the first half.

"Back then we really swarmed to the ball more, and I think we've kind of gotten lax on that," Langston said. "Now we're looking to swarm better and get to the guy with the ball quicker."

And if that can happen, Cooper's historic season can continue another round. The program, however, is looking to go much farther.

"The kids are really hungry and want to keep this going," Windham said. "We've got 18 seniors and they're not ready to stop playing. They don't want it to end. We've got a good chance if we're fortunate enough to get past Sweetwater, we feel we can go a ways. They're not near satisfied."

Football Classic Coming

photo1.jpg

Classic football event coming to Bowl

By Ben Barkley/The Reporter Managing Editor
The Sweetwater community wants to honor one of its own during the 2005 football season.

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce's sports committee has established a plan to create a "Sammy Baugh Classic," which would be held during the third week of the high school football season in 2005. The Sweetwater ISD Board of Trustees voted to support the proposal and the use of the Mustang Bowl.

Committee co-chairman Ted Thomas spoke to members of the board during its Monday meeting. He said that the idea has come about because of the success of the Gordon Wood Classic in Brownwood the past two seasons. He noted that the "Sammy Baugh Classic" would not be held the same week as the classic in Brownwood.

The format would be similar with one game on Thursday and Friday and two games on Saturday. He noted that Sweetwater would be the marquee game and would be played on Friday night.

"Sweetwater will always be the Friday night game," he said.

One of the selling points for the classic will be the bowl and turf.

"Teams will want to come up to Sweetwater to play in the bowl," Thomas said.

He added that the committee already has the permission of Baugh to use his name for the event.

Thomas has made a list of teams and will soon be sending out letters to the schools.

"In Brownwood, the first year they had to invite teams," he said. "Now, they are getting calls from teams. This is something that could really take off."

Superintendent Dr. Ronny Beard said he likes the idea and it would pull people into the community.

"This will be a neat deal for Sweetwater," he said. "The Chamber has been great to work with."

Board members agreed that the idea was good and were excited to hear the news.

"What better name to use than Sammy Baugh? He is known around the nation," said board member Wes Bishop.

Baugh arrived on the pro football scene in 1937, the same year the Redskins moved to Washington from Boston. The Texas Christian star was the team's first round pick that year. Over the next 16 seasons "Slingin' Sammy" not only helped establish the pro game in the nation's capital, he also was a major influence in the offensive revolution that occurred in the late 1930s and early 1940s.

When Baugh first started with the Redskins, pro football was largely a grind-it-out ground game. The forward pass was something to be used with caution, and never inside your 30-yard line, except in desperate situations. By the time Baugh was through, the forward pass was a primary offensive weapon.

Obviously, such a change could not be totally brought about by one individual. But Baugh was the catalyst that changed the game. No one had seen a passer who could throw with such accuracy.

Baugh started his pro career as a single wing tailback and didn't make the switch to the T-formation until 1944. He won a record-setting six NFL passing titles and earned first-team All-NFL honors seven times in his career. Sammy also led the NFL in punting four straight years from 1940 through 1943. Extremely versatile, he led the NFL in passing, pass interceptions, and punting in 1943.

One of his best single performances came on "Sammy Baugh Day" in 1947 when he passed for 355 yards and 6 touchdowns against the Chicago Cardinals, that season's eventual champions. Baugh, although highly competitive, was still comparatively easy-going and never lost his sense of humor. When the Chicago Bears defeated the Redskins, 73-0, in the famous 1940 NFL title battle, a Redskins end dropped a touchdown pass in the end zone. Reporters asked Baugh if the outcome would have been different had the pass been caught. "Yeah," Baugh answered, "It would have made it 73-7."

Good morning Mustangs!

What could be better? A chance to play Lubbock Cooper again!

Playing in Abilene too. Let them travel farther than you. That was genius!

I put some numbers together.
Since the Abilene Wylie game, you Mustangs have scored 168 points while allowing just 66.

The average score since Abilene Wylie's game is 42-17.
Great Job!!

I don't know what happened back in week one when Lubbock Cooper won by 3 points, but I believe you are a completely different team now.
I will be in the stands friday Night in Abilene. It's time to set the record straight.
Time for a little payback.

Mustangs Next Opponent

Cooper wallops Borger in bi-district
BY JEFF WALKER
AVALANCHE-JOURNAL

PLAINVIEW — Cooper's history-making season continued on Friday night at Bulldog Stadium.

Trey Wood's interception stopped a Borger drive, and Josh Barnett took the next play 85 yards for a touchdown as the Pirates knocked off the Bulldogs, 32-14, in a Class 3A bi-district playoff. Cooper will next face Sweetwater in the area round next week, a team it defeated 17-14 earlier this season.

The Pirates (9-2) have now won district and bi-district titles for the first time since 1972 in successive weeks.

"That was a big one," Cooper head coach John Windham said of the interception. "If they would have scored there that would have given them all the momentum and it would have been tight the rest of the way. That was a big-time play by Trey, and I know he wanted to redeem himself after the fumble in the first quarter."

Wood's first-quarter fumble led to Borger's only touchdown until the Bulldogs tacked one on at the end of the game when the outcome already was decided.

After the Bulldogs (4-6) grabbed the early momentum with the turnover and score, Cooper answered quickly with an eight-play drive that ended with a five-yard run by Bradley Madison.

Cooper forced a punt on Borger's next possession, and the Pirates took the lead for good when Trace Gurss took a trap up the middle for seven yards to give Cooper a 14-7 advantage with 5:14 to go in the second quarter.

The Pirates' drive used 13 plays, covered 73 yards and took 6:28 off the clock.

The Cooper offensive line did a great job all night opening holes for the Pirates' running attack. Cooper finished the game with 404 rushing yards.

Madison, who scored three touchdowns on runs of 5, 1 and 14 yards, finished the first half with 122 of his 204 rushing yards. As a team, Cooper had 164 total yards in the first half.

Borger, meanwhile, struggled to move the ball against the Cooper defense. The Bulldogs finished the opening half with 67 total yards, which was only four more yards than Madison had on the Pirates' second touchdown drive.

"Our offensive line did a great job," Wood said. "When they're on, they're awesome and they've been on for the last six or seven games. You've got to give them all the credit, because we don't get anything without the offensive line."

Borger took the second-half kickoff and appeared to be going in to tie the score.

Marcus Vidrine, who scored the Bulldogs' first touchdown on a 1-yard run, drove his offense to the Cooper 18-yard line. Facing a second-and-8 situation, Vidrine dropped back and tried to loft a pass over the middle. Wood wondered over from his linebacker spot and picked it off at the Cooper five-yard line to stop the drive.

"Really, I just dropped back and the ball came right to me," Wood said. "I was pretty lucky but it was a great team effort for us to get the win."

Seminole bounced

By Lee Scheide
Odessa American

Skye Green scored on touchdown runs of 43 and 56 yards Friday night to pace Sweetwater’s 41-14 over Seminole in their 3A Division II bi-district playoff game at Ratliff Stadium.
Green, a sophomore, finished with 108 yards on six carries to lead the Mustangs (9-2) in the second round of the playoffs.
Kendal Carillo, Alan Copeland and Russell Clayton also scored on offense for Sweetwater, with Brandon Fangman returning a punt for another score.
Jeremy Hill carried the ball 26 times for 185 yards and two first-half touchdowns for the Indians (5-6). However, he was slowed by a hit in the third quarter and the Seminoles’ offense sputtered after that.
“I am so proud of the way the kids battled tonight,” Sweetwater coach Kent Jackson said. “Seminole came prepared to play and took advantage of everything in the first half.
“I thought that getting the tying touchdown with 30 seconds in the first half was key, but so was the defensive stand after we turned the ball over on our first possession in the third quarter.”
After recovering a Mustangs’ fumble on the Sweetwater 44, the Indians could only move six yards before a bad snap turned the ball back over to Sweetwater.
Thompson then directed a six-play, 52-yard drive, capped by Carillo’s 34-yard run, to put the Mustangs ahead for good.

Way to go Stangs..

hor18.gif

Well, so much for numbers.

On paper, this looked like a close game. The Sweetwater Mustangs totally dominated Merkel and won 52-6.
Congratulations Mustangs, you put the whole enchilada together for a massive win which gave Sweetwater a part of the district championship.

Abilene Wylie will play Ft. Stockton at a place to be determined later.
Snyder will play Midland Greenwood in Midland.
Swetwater will advance to play Seminole at a place to be determined.

Great job Mustangs!

Hammer Time!!!

Ok Mustangs,

Time to put all the guessing about tonight away. Time to focus and know we are just where we want to be.

Time to bring home a championship.

Tonight's game is the perfect situation and point of time you have worked for all season. Look at all the advantages going into tonight's game.

You are at home in Mustang Bowl.
You are favored to win, yet cautious enough to know it is earned on the field.

It's simply time to do it.

It's time to bring it.

It's Hammer Time!!!

What if.....

What if we could all wear red??????

The Red Sea

RedSea.jpg

Dear Mustang Fans,

Let's make Mustang Bowl, THE RED SEA!!!!!!!
The call has been made for fans to wear red Friday.

It's important.

Mustang Bowl has traditionally been a very good place for the Mustangs to settle the score. This week against Merkel is no exception.

Please, please, every fan should do his/her part.

Wear the red!!!!!!!!
Bring those plastic jugs filled with nuts and bolts,
Make noise!

Let's let the team know that there is a capacity crowd on hand to support them.
Let's let our neighbors from Merkel know that there is not a worse place to play and try and win for them like Mustang Bowl.
Let's make signs for the bowl that advise the Merkel faithful that they are entering the "Snake Pit."

Sweetwater fans, don't feel bad if you need to tap someone on the shoulder and ask them where their red is?

Let's do it!!!!!!

Lew

It comes down to motivation

horserunning.gif

Dear Sweetwater Mustangs,

Let me advise you that I have a little secret. Since I have a history of finance, I am a numbers guy. I like to crunch numbers and see how things shake out. One of the big reasons I like numbers is because numbers don't lie.

I could go on and on all day about how this is a true statement, but just know that not only does this web site provide outstanding information about local teams, another strong suit is the numbers that this site provides.

For example:

Through this week, Sweetwater has 2417 yards in the rushing department.
Merkel has 2181 yards rushing. That's a difference of +236 yards for the Mustangs.

Merkel has 596 yards in the passing game.
Sweetwater has 327 yards passing. A -269 yards for Sweetwater.

So, if you take the 236 rushing and subtract the 269 passing yards, Merkel has a net positive of 33 yards. A virtual deadlock in yards for the entire season!!!!

What does that leave us Sweetwater fans looking at?

MOTIVATION!

Can you do it Mustangs?

This is the last regular season game for both teams. One is in, the other is out.

Location, location, location.

Dear Mustangs,

Congratulations on a good season so far. I have tried to balance the playing field for you as far as what people write about you. I have tried all season to be a presence for Sweetwater in this Abilene market. I have done my best to make people aware of you outside of Nolan County.

I still read items like this from today's Abilene Reporter News:

"Class 3A: Snyder and Wylie are both in from District 4, though the positioning is still up in the air; wins by both Wylie Sweetwater would make a three-way tie with Snyder, which Sweetwater would win on point differential, with Wylie second and Snyder third. Should Sweetwater lose to Merkel, though, it would be 2-2, with losses to Wylie and Merkel - meaning it's a win-and-you-get-first-place situation for the Mustangs. Of course, if Sweetwater is upset by Merkel, it's the Badgers moving on in third place and the Mustangs staying home. Meanwhile, in less convoluted districts, Breckenridge needs to beat Vernon in District 5 and Comanche is in from District 8."

Frankly, I have done all that I can to level the "newspaper" playing field. But it still comes down to ya'll.

Today is Wednesday. Let's focus like it's an out of town game. Let's call it a business trip at home. Let's put all the scenerios away, and just go out and play your best. You will be just fine.

Democracy

tylsm.gif

Dear fellow Americans,

I just wanted to take a moment to encourage everyone to get out and vote. This is our chance as Americans to exercise our right of democracy...
As a free society, nothing is more important or displays America more than election day.

Have a great day, and may God bless America.

Answers to questions

hosshoe2.gif

Thanks to Danny Reagan and Cam...the Yellow Hammer blogger for some much needed answers:

Speaking of Snyder ...

... and Wylie and Sweetwater ... our Rotan blogger, Cam Tovias, has filled me in on the complexities of the playoff implications in District 4-3A.

Cam, who is a big Yellowhammer supporter, grew up in Sweetwater, so he's "a Mustang at heart."

According to Cam, if Sweetwater and Wylie win out - forcing a 3-way tie - Sweetwater wins the district on points (+10 on Snyder, -6 on Wylie for a total of +4).

Wylie would have +6 on Sweetwater, -4 on Snyder for a total of +2.

Snyder would finish third (-10 on Sweetwater, +4 on Wylie for a total of -6).

However, all three teams would make the playoffs - Wylie in Division I, and Sweetwater and Snyder in Division II.

If you recall, Snyder was in Division I last year as champion out of District 3-3A, and the Bulldogs (District 6-3A winner) edged the Tigers, 18-6, in the quarterfinals. Wylie lost the next week to Gainesville, 37-24.
