Where, oh where, are the Recruits?

Forgive me for saying so, but I am confused.

Maybe it's just me, but I have always thought the Big Country was a hotbed for high school football. I believe (and still do) some of the state's best high school football players come from west Texas.

As I tracked the DALLAS MORNING NEWS this past year, I didn't see too many Top 100 football recruits from west Texas. Why is that?

What happens to people after they win a state championship? What happens to people and players when it's very evident that 3 teams from District 4-3A for example, only a couple get Division I college scholarships? I can't quite figure this out.

I haven't read anywhere about where Dee Walker from Snyder has had any offers. Here is a tailback that gained 2400 yards! Where is the young man going to go to college?

If I were Texas Tech I would be living in Snyder to recruit this player. I mean that sincerely. I am a recruiter also. My school doesn't have a football team or anything like that, but I know a little something about recruiting high school seniors.

I go into high schools here in the Ft. Worth area and talk to seniors about everyday. Here are some of their concerns:

1. TAKS Tests: I'm not an authority on this subject, I just see the effects it has on our kids. I talk to teachers daily, and they are somewhat frustrated also by telling me they just teach for this particular test.

2. Finances: I have found the number one reason kids are fearful of college is because of finances. I then ask the question, "have you applied for any scholarships?" The usual answer is, "I don't think my GPA, TAKS, tests are good enough". Whatever any other exam they throw
at the kids today it is just frustration for lots of kids.
Now lets assume you are a right guard for a state champion football team. Shouldn't someone be trying to recruit them?

I am still confused. I see kids getting scholarships in the dallas area, and thier team didn't make it to the playoffs. Perhaps I am just way off base. Maybe it all washes out. Maybe the kids don't do that well scholastically, but I don't imagine that's the case. I would be willing to say Abilene Wylie is probably an above average school in that regard. So what is the real issue here? I dunno, you tell me.
