(22) Death of a Classmate

Thursday I attended the funeral of Ricky Baker a very dear friend for thirty nine years. I know most everyone here knew Ricky either in school or from Sweetwater. As I passed in front of his remains I looked down and in the casket were two items that only the folks that knew Ricky in the past few years would identify with; a Sweetwater Mustang ball cap and a cow bell. Ricky has two sons one has left Sweetwater and plays college ball now the other is a senior at Sweetwater. Ricky alwys wore that hat or one similar and on Friday nights during football season that cow bell got a work out. Ricky was buried in a red sweater that said Sweetwater Mustangs on the front. I had the pleasure to ride to the cementery with Susan Wills Buley, Libby Carr Palma and Kent "Boaty" Boatright all from the calss of 1969.

After the graveside ceremony a young man approached me and relayed a story of how he had all of our chin straps and some other nice words. As I looked around to my right was Johnny
Moore, Kent Boatright, Aubrey McCain and the coach from the 1969 Lubbock Estacado Matadors Kenneth Keeling. I can not express how lucky I am to know these men. There was more heart standing in that ten square feet than anyone could possibly understand. From fearce competitors to great men and awsome friends I can not tell you how proud I was to say these are my friends and this is my hometown.

Ricky we will miss you.

David
