Sweetwater trounces Andrews, 38-0

OK, let's all admit it. Driving to Andrews is a pain in the butt. After you turn off of I-20 in Big Spring, you have to barrel down a dark 2 lane road at 75 MPH or get run over, always looking for that stop sign that comes out of no where. No one likes to drive to Andrews, of course unless you are going home to Andrews.

That was the scenerio for this week's game for Sweetwater. Drive to Andrews and play a 4A school that quite frankly, would love to stuff it to Swetwater. Not a very cozy feeling is it?

But the Sweetwater Mustangs traveled to Andrews and played like they owned the entire city of Andrews.

The game started with James Beckwith kicking off to the Andrews team (I hate calling them Mustangs)and they returned the ball to around the 25. The first offensive play for Andrews was comical to say the least. The QB took the snap, spun around to attempt a handoff, but no one was there. In all fairness, can you imagine the fear he must have had? He freaked out so bad, he literally just dropped the ball, the Sweetwater Mustangs recovered the ball, and on the 1st play from scrimmage, the Mustangs scored! 7-0 Sweetwater, and people were still looking for their seats to sit down. Wow.

Andrews was tough though. It wasn't like they just laid down right there and quit. Andrews was going to fight all night regardless. I give Andrews credit, they never quit.

I think there were two instances that changed this game into a Sweetwater victory. With Sweetwater ahead 14-0 in the 2nd quarter, Andrews had a nice drive going and got down to the Sweetwater 3 yard line and turned the ball over on downs. Sweetwater QB Sonny Birdwell took the snap, pitched to Skye Green around left end, and he ran for a 97 yard touchdown. I don't know if Sweetwater or the UIL keeps records on such things, but that had to be the longest run from scrimmage for a Mustang that I can ever remember. The other thing that changed the game was this. Sonny Birdwell is a great kid and a very good quarterback, but with Kendall Carrillo out, someone had to punt the ball. (Correction, it was Duone Cunnigs) Birdwell had punted twice and although his punts were as high as the Southland building in Dallas, the ball only went 10-15 yards. On Sweetwater's 3rd punt, the freshman Rufus McCann of all people punted the ball about 45 yards and got the ball out of Sweetwater's end of the field. That was huge.

Of course, did I mention the defense didn't let Andrews score a single point? That is their 2nd shutout of the season. Do ya'll realize in 4 games, the defense has only allowed 20 points? That's roughly 10 points a game. (Thanks for the math lessons Coach Todd)
Actually, if you divide 20 points by 4 games it comes out to 5 points a game. Sorry Coach Todd. I was actually thinking about the two games divided by two instead of the total 4 games. Don't ya'll love a blog with mistakes??LOLOL

The Mustangs accomplished a ton Friday night. They traveled to Andrews and beat a 4A team, Snyder barely won again, and it's homecoming next week against Pecos. See ya'll in Sweetwater!

Just thought I would let everyone know, that the 97 yard touchdown was not the longest play in recent memory. In 99 we were playing these same Andrews Mustangs and Willie Amos took one 99 yards against them, although we did end up losing that game. But Shaud Williams NEVER scored a touchdown against Sweetwater!! Good job STANGS!

Lew, as always , great article. Only thing wrong is that Sonny Birdwell was not the punter, but Duone Cunnings!

LOLOLOL. thanks Russ,

Man, have I botched this entry enough??LOL
My apologies to everyone for the mistakes. But I don't have a program, the paper never listed everyone on the team with their names and numbers etc. I sort of have to spell em the best way I can. Sorry about all that, and thanks for putting up with me.
