Going out on a limb

Good morning Mustangs,

I was just looking at District 3-3A to just see what the possibilities are for the 1st round playoffs after next week's final game assuming the Mustangs beat Merkel.

Here are the teams:

District 3-3A Football according to the 2005-2006 UIL Official Site

Ft. Stockton
Lamesa
Midland Greenwood
Monahans
Pecos
Seminole

I have no idea what their records are, or who is Division I and II teams are. Maybe this will be a good project to do today. Stay tuned. I think what I'll do is simply go back to last year's schedules and see if that will answer some questions.

Of course, I am assuming this would be the district Sweetwater would match up to in the first round as District 1-3A plays 2-3 A, and 3-3A plays 4-3A etc.

OK, here are the scores in the 1st round from last year:

Abilene Wylie 31, Fort Stockton 7
Snyder 19, Midland Greenwood 7
Sweetwater 41, Seminole 14

Of course I understand Monahans is in this year, lots of talk from Monahans. Not sure who else is in from that district so we'll see. I think Ft. Stockton is winless, so it appears Monahans, Midland Greenwood, and probably Seminole.

Stay tuned.

Snyder 16, Abilene Wylie 13 - Final

Congrats to Sweetwater Mustangs Tri Champs, District 4-3A should they defeat Merkel next week.

Blogosphere, west Texas style

Dear Mustangs,

I consider myself fortunate to be able to have my office at home. I am fortunate that much of my work is done on-line, which enables me to be able to write a few web logs or blogs as they are called. I work for a company and I have a side business that also is on-line related. Here is the link to my business website and a list of sports blogs that I write:

www.fwtabc.com

http://journals.aol.com/lrpatton/SportsBarBuffet/

http://journals.aol.com/lrpatton/DallasCowboys/

http://journals.aol.com/lrpatton/KatrinaUSA/

http://journals.aol.com/lrpatton/DallasMavericks/

The reason I mention this is because I enjoy blogging. It doesn't take any money, anyone can do it, and I find if I write things down, (or type things down in this case) it helps me better organize things. You notice that each of the above blogs has a title. Each of those titles has different topics within those titles that are RELATED to the title. In other words, when I write in one of my blogs, I try to make the topic related to the name of the Blog. Now sometimes I will put something on a blog that maybe isn't related to that blog name, but it isn't too extreme.

I have seen some blogs and websites that are confusing to me. Let me explain what I mean by that. If you wanted to see my Cowboys blog, I wouldn't put on that blog that I had a tooth pulled that day, unless I was comparing a Cowboy's defensive lineman knocking a tooth out of a quarterback's mouth and how it might feel the same.

If you clicked on my Dallas Maverick's blog, you could read about the Dallas Mavericks. You wouldn't see anything about how people in Mexico were trying to cope with a hurricane.

I love reading different blogs. Heck, I read more on the computer than watch TV. There is some really good writing talent out in the blogosphere. There are some sites I just wouldn't waste my time to click on.

Have a great weekend!

Abilene Wylie VS. Snyder

Good morning Mustangs.

It's Friday in Texas, and I know the Mustangs have a much deserved open date tonight, so I just couldn't help but write about the big game in Snyder tonight.

Lots of folks are trying to figure how this game will go. This should be one of the very best games in the entire state tonight.

I don't know if Chad Rogers can do this on a high school level or not, but whenever the pro teams have a dangerous qb, the defense allows one player to just "shadow" the player. In the case of Michael Vick for the Atlanta Falcons, there have been times where a linebacker just keys on him. Follows him if he drops to pass, runs the ball, or whatever. I may be talking out of my hat, but it would be neat if Snyder had someone to shadow Case Keenum and give him fits.

Bottom line is the game is in Snyder. The game will be between the Snyder defense and the Wylie offense.
This year has been like last year in District 4-3A. Last year, Wylie defeated Sweetwater, Sweetwater defeated Snyder, and Snyder defeated Wylie for a 3 way district championship. So far this year, all the tumblers have fallen into place just like last year. The game tonight will determine if the final combination will fall into place. I say it will. I know that on paper, Abilene Wylie should win this game. But I think tonight, the Snyder Tigers find a way to win....it's just pre-determined that way.

Lady Stangs beat Snyder, clinch berth

Lady Stangs beat Snyder, clinch berth

SNYDER - Everything that needed to happen did for the Sweetwater volleyball team on Tuesday.

The Lady Mustangs, losers of two straight entering their final regular season match at Snyder, rebounded with a 25-27, 25-15, 25-17, 29-27 victory to sew up a playoff berth out of District 4-3A for the second straight year.

Tika Smith had an incredible 27 kills - plus nine blocks and eight digs - to pace Sweetwater (14-16 overall), which clinched the No. 2 playoff berth with a 3-3 record. The Lady Mustangs will begin the playoffs early next week.

Lamesa (6-0) will be the No. 1 seed in 4-3A and Greenwood (2-4) is the other playoff representative. Snyder could have forced a three-way tie for second place with a win Tuesday, but instead finishes with a 1-5 record.

“It was a great win,” said Sweetwater coach Liz Miller. “We hadn't been very successful on the road lately, so it helped the girls get their confidence back before going into the playoffs. We decided to really focus on staying mentally strong. It's hard to play in Snyder's gym and we knew it was their last shot at a playoff position.”

Other individual standouts were Lauren Doak with 20 kill assists and seven digs; Mattie Doak with 13 digs, three kills, four kill assists and two blocks; Megan Kamer with seven kills, three digs and three blocks; Ciara Ortega with 11 digs, three kills and one kill assist; Meagan Spradlin with seven digs, nine kill assists and one ace; Leigh Ann Sims with five kills and sev-en assists; Bennie Smith with six kills and one dig; Whitney Gomez with six digs; and Andrea Cleckler with one dig.

World Series, are you serious?

The Houston Astros just seem to be glad they are in the World Series.

When the Astros won the NLCS in St. Louis, they could have packed up and flown right to Chicago and rested for a couple of days before Game 1 of the World Series in Chicago. Instead, they flew home to Houston, made frantic plans and dispersed tickets to relatives, boarded the flight from Houston to Chicago and got in Friday. Rush, rush, rush.

Why don't pro teams plan better? I don't have a clue. Roger Clemons has a strained leg muscle and barely made 2 innings in game 2.

The Chicago White Sox are up 3-0 after last night's marathon 14 inning game. Which leads to this question: How many people stayed up past midnight to watch it? I had enough at 12:10 and went to bed. Somewhere, back in the back of my mind I'm thinking, do advertisers really pay for advertising to a large group of fans after midnight?

I think the Sox are going to win the series (easy prediction) but why can't MLB let fans watch it at a decent hour?

I guess everything is bigger in Texas. The first World Series game in Texas had to cover two dates.

Random Thoughts

Just sitting here wondering what to write about with an open date this week.

Studies have shown that to have a successful blog such as this one, you have to put something here for folks to read on a regular basis. I don't want to lose any good folks that are reading this blog so let me throw this topic out and see what ya'll think.

Abilene Wylie is going to Snyder to play the Tigers Friday night. If I lived in Sweetwater, I would take a trip over there to see two good football teams play.

As I mentioned last week, I would hope that Snyder wins the game so Sweetwater, Snyder, and Abilene Wylie would have the same district record with one game left in the regular season. It should be a great game. Here is my prediction.

I think Snyder has a very tough, quality football team. I think their coach is top notch. I guess I should mention all of the coaches in 4-3A are top notch, but the Snyder coach I think is a key ingredient to the Snyder mystic if that's the right word. He's plenty sharp.
With that said, Coach Hugh Sandifer is no sloutch himself. Both programs are very good, both coaches are very good also.

Let's look at the players.

Lat year, as everyone knows, Abilene Wylie won the 3A Division 1 state championship. Now, I don't know if anyone agrees or not, but personally, I think this year's Wylie team is better than last year's if that's possible. I think the players are bigger and stronger, and I think Case Keenum has more tools to use in that offense than last year.

The same thing can be said of Snyder. They are not a 1 man rushing giant like they were last year. The Snyder game plan includes lots more passing in their game and they are very good at it.

So if both versions of Snyder and Wylie are better than last year, who do I think wins this game?
Good question. Here is the key matchup. If Snyder's defense can hold Wylie off the boards, they will win. The key to this game in other words will be Snyder's defense and how they can contain Keenum. All indications look to Wylie to win. Take both games that Sweetwater played, and Wylie dominated more than Snyder did.

But something in the back of my mind says Snyder may have a teeny bit more heart. It's just a guess. So in answer to the big question who wins..I have to give two answers because the game may be that close.
1) If Snyder plays with all their heart and the defense holds Wylie to 14 or less points, Snyder wins
2) If Wylie gets their lines (both offense and defense) which are bigger than Snyder's line to control the line of scrimmage and pass block well, Wylie wins.

I wish I could be more definate in an answer than that, but that's just how close this game may be.

Hope ya'll enjoy the game if you go.

Am I missing something here?

Dear Mustangs,

One of the good things about life is you wake up one day, and everything you thought you knew doesn't apply any longer.

Now before I voice my rant, I just told ya'll things change. I don't claim to be an expert so if I am making a mistake, or if I'm in error on this, please let me know. I'm not an expert so if you can comment or help me understand I would appreciate it.

How does Cuero go from Division 1 in 3A to Division 2 in 3A during the football season?

I mean, can't all this shuffling around be done BEFORE the season starts? I noticed that Soulthlake Carroll went from Division 1 in 5A to Division 2 in 5A. What's going on here?

Here is a quote from a great website, Texpreps.com.

"There is only one change among the nine division leaders this week and it isn't related to a defeat. Since Cuero is headed to Class 3A's division II playoffs, the Gobblers are being promoted to the top position.

Spring Westfield (5A-I), Southlake Carroll (5A-II), Highland Park (4A-I), La Marque (4A-II), West Orange-Stark (3A-I), Newton (2A-I), Celina (2A-II) and Chilton (1A) continue to impress and all appear headed to finish the regular season undefeated. Only a handful of lower ranked teams lost last week but none of the biggies were among the losers.

The only thing currently worse than the current water-downed three team, two division system in classes 5A through 2A is the attempt to determine who fits where in TexPreps rankings. Having four playoff teams in 5A and two divisions in both 1A and six-man football could be a worse situation.

It is possible that both Southlake Carroll and Longview could wind up in the 5A-I bracket and Newton might go the Division II route in 2A. Because of a new enrollment figure for 2005, Schertz Clemens will wind up in 5A-II, thus weakening Division I even more.

However, all we can do it apply our best forecasts and clear up any mess after the end of the regular season. TexPreps thanks all those who have brought some of these items to our attention and we appreciate your readership."

Baloney.....
They change Cuero to Division 2 in 3A and they take over the #1 ranking?

Folks, something has gone wrong with our high school system. But that's just my opinion.

Class 3A-II

1. Cuero
2. Cameron
3. Tatum
4. Dallas Madison
5. Sweetwater
6. Snyder
7. Gilmer
8. Bellville
9. Marlin
10. Wimberley

Final - Sweetwater 20, Clyde 13

OK, let me set the scene for you.

This was the last home game for alot of seniors.

Sweetwater had just played the most emotional game of the year last week. I'll have to check, but I think Clyde had the week off last week, but I'll check that.

We had Kendal Carrillo back from injury as well as Ty Jone...good to have them back.

The game started in normal Sweetwater fashion. We held Clyde to 3 and out and on the 2nd offensive play for the Mustangs, Skye Green ran for like 68 yards for the Mustangs 1st touchdown...Mustangs 7-0 and I'm feeling pretty good. Things seemed pretty normal with Sweetwater going in at the half 20-0.

Let me mention I have never critisized the refs in any games this year. I don't like to complain like that. But in all candor, there was one official that seemed to call everything against the Mustangs. Now all of this is according to the very good broadcasters at KXOX.
Clyde scored, and then on their second touchdown, their quarterback fumbled the ball and we recovered..but the official said he was in the end zone before the fumble. They missed the extra point, and that's how the score stayed until the finish, 20-13.

Let me make an observation here. Yes, I know the second half was a little rough. But it sounded to me as though Clyde did alot of work in the film room. It seems like they knew which plays were coming. That's just my opinion. I'm going to have to read the breakdown on the game...but we came pretty close to this being a desperate situation.

Now bear in mind, I'm not pointing the finger at anyone right now..except that one official, but this was much closer than it should have been. But like J.B. says, a win is a win...but something wasn't right here. I'm going to be very interested to dig deeper in this game to see what I can find out on it. Another factor that I think was huge here was Clyde was playing for it's life. Now you all know after the Snyder game last week, I don't think we had the sense of urgency that Clyde had.

The bottom line is we won, and I just think Clyde was in panic mode more than us...which is a natural feeling I think..I certainly wasn't in panic mode until the 4th quarter. What I am trying to say is, I think it was just one of those freaky things...that wouldn't happen again if we played Clyde 10 straight times.

I think everything is fine, but it bothers me that Clyde seemed to know what was coming...and I don't know if it's based on formations or what. But it just felt like we were tipping them off.

Good job Mustangs. You won.....congrats!

I'll have some video of the game up shortly.

District 4-3A Tonight

Tonight for District 4-3A might seem like a quite night.

Sweetwater hosts Clyde, Snyder has to drive through Sweetwater to get to Merkel, and Abilene Wylie has the night off.

Seems innocent enough huh?

You are thinking Snyder handles Merkel, and Sweetwater takes a yawner from Clyde in the Bowl.

Well, history is full of games that were supposed to be yawners when in fact, the underdog came in and trounced the favorite team.

Be careful here folks. The good thing about football is it's unpredictable. Don't let the old guard down for a moment.

I'm going to write more on this next week, but for my friends over in Snyder, good luck tonight. If you feel like there are alot of eyes watching you play tonight, you are going to be correct. Abilene Wylie has the night off and will travel to Snyder next week to play you. I'm pretty sure 1/2 of Abilene will be out there spying on you. You might see several cameras, probably the entire Wylie football team will be in attendance. Give em a good show. As a Sweetwater fan, I hope ya'll beat Wylie next week, so have a good game tonight, and then have a great game next week. We'll be rooting for you!

Tradition

HORSES61.gif

Dear Mustangs,

It's Friday. Game night.

Just something for you to think about while you wait for Clyde to come in the "snake pit".

I don't know if you keep up with this ol blog or not, I suspect ya'll do, but I just wanted to mention that one of your biggest fans is J.B. Laughlin.
I first "met" J.B. on this blog and I found an immediate interest in him because of some comments he made regarding how long he has been a Mustang fan. I don't know if ya'll noticed or not, but he even played ball with the great Sammy Baugh.

Through several postings on this blog, I sort of get to know folks. I found out J.B. has been married for over 50 years, I found out all sorts of things. J.B. and his wife live over in New Mexico and he doesn't get the chance to get to Mustang Bowl much anymore.

The thing I like about J.B.'s posts are, you Mustangs can do no wrong. You Mustangs probably go through his mind several times a day. He feels and expects you Mustangs to win state! Now you may be asking yourselves, why would this nice man in New Mexico care that much about what happens in Sweetwater's Mustang Bowl?

Let me try and explain it. It's called TRADITION. Like J.B., Sweetwater has a long line of success in football. It is the common link between you Mustangs of today, and the class of 1940. The tradition of winning at Sweetwater High School. When Sweetwater wins, in some strange way we older fans can say to ourselves that the years may fly by before us, but Sweetwater Mustangs continue to win. It' a constant factor that we cling to.

J.B. noted on just a previous post awhile ago that he is going in for some kind of surgery. Do me a favor Mustangs. As you walk down the stairs tonight, say a little prayer for your biggest fan that is thinking of you out in New Mexico.

Go get Clyde!!!!!!!!

Lew

Go Mustangs!

swaterhorse.jpg

Welcome back to Mustang Bowl Mustangs!

This should give the fans a chance to go to the game, and just root and holler for the Big Red machine and show appreciation for a great team.

Clyde comes to town looking to save their season. I don't think as far as the Mustangs have come, that's gonna happen, but it is game day so that means time to tend to business.

I think it should be requirement that all Sweetwater fans wear red tonight.
Heck, have fun like those ladies in the red wigs are having. That's what it's all about isn't it? Supporting the Mustangs and having fun.

Looking forward to possibly seeing Kendal Carrillo back in action. We also might get to see Ty Jones back. The bottom line is the strom is about over, and now it's time to polish up the chrome, and get ready for the playoffs!

Go get em Mustangs!

To the Senior class

Dear Seniors,

Since I work in an admissions department for a technical college, I just want to remind you that you should be on your way to applying for scholarships for college if you intend to go.

Scholarships are easy to appy for, and it's free money for college tuition.

I know this year's football season is exciting. I know you are extremly busy with six weeks and soon, semester exams. There is usually work to go to, ACT and SAT exams to plan on taking, I know you are busy. But please remember that you are competing also for scholarship money for college. Don't miss the opportunity! If you have any questions about the subject, feel free to contact me. Money is the #1 concern for students regarding college. Why not find some free money?

Please remember, the more scholarship money you can obtain, the less money comes out of YOUR pocket!

Crazy Ray

Does everyone remember "Crazy Ray" the Dallas Cowboys mascot?

Here is a story for you. Did you know he and his wife have been married for over 50 years and they are both in their upper 70's now?

Something I didn't know but Crazy Ray was never paid a dime from the Cowboys organization. His initial job that started at the Cotton Bowl was to sell pennants.

Do yourselves a favor and read his heart warming story.

The polls get it right

The new polls are out. I compliment all the voters for getting it right.

Congrats to District 4-3A for still having all 3 teams in the Top 10. Something will have to give this week as Abilene Wylie visits Snyder. Good luck to both Wylie and Snyder. Of course, one team will win and another will lose. But the playoffs isn't a bad consolation.

Success!!

Sweetwater head coach Kent Jackson challenged his team to step up and perform prior to its game at Snyder. The Mustangs answered the challenge by scoring a 17-6 win over its rivals at Tiger Stadium. Assistant coach Scott Lambert celebrated the win, as did the student body and fans.

Right turn, Clyde

Orangotan1.jpg

Next opponent, Clyde Bulldogs.

Does anyone remember that old Clint Eastwood movie where Clint travels around with that cute orangutan named Clyde? Everytime Clint would say "right turn, Clyde", the orangutan would make his hand into a fist and give like a right hand turn....it was so funny, sometimes the over-sized monkey would knock bad guys out by just giving the right turn signal.

I don't know what that has to do with the Clyde Bulldogs, but I digress.

Clyde is coming off of a bye week. They should be well rested since the Snyder game on October 7th. Clyde lost to Snyder 42-6. No way will the Mustangs beat Clyde that badly because there will probably be some letdown after the huge win the Mustangs had against Snyder.

No one wants to admit this, but the real chance of a let down is something Coach Kent Jackson is going to try to avoid this week. Just win this game against Clyde, do the bye week, then finish the regular season against Merkel. Should be a task that gets handled pretty well. Right turn, Clyde.

Oh and by the way folks, if you want to post comments on my blog, you might consider keeping it clean because I get to decide what's posted and what isn't. This was a great football game, my hat's off to both teams. But I won't post anything that's rude. Got that SnyderFan @yahoo.com with an IP address of 70.247.8.175?

What I say on this blog is never anything personal. You on the other hand, want to make it a personal thing. That won't work here.

REDEMPTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow!

What a game! Sweetwater goes to Snyder and claims Redemption by defeating the Hated Rival Snyder Tigers 17-6!

I listened to the game on the internet and it was so exciting. Let's give a shout out to some unsung heroes. Justin Rodriquez who scooped up a fumble and ran way back in the Snyder end of the field. From there, my man the Batman, Joseph Banyard ran it in for the first score 7-0.

Both sides of the lines for Sweetwater absolutely dominated Snyder tonight. How about a shout out to Britt Glover at his right guard position? Banyard had plenty of room on the right side of the line. I'm surprised we didn't run that off guard/tackle play more often because they had had no answer for Mr. Glover.

Sweetwater goes in at the half with a 10-0 lead.

The 3rd quarter started and we went 3 and out...and then the ball game was decided. Matt Reigh the Snyder quarterback fumbled the exchanged from center and the Mustangs recovered. From there, Sweetwater used the remaining 3rd quarter on a 60 yard drive resulting in a Joseph Banyard 4th down touchdown. Sweetwater led 17-0 with 11:00 left in the game.

Snyder got the ball back and had to use a trick play (of course) to get a first down off of a fake punt. Then there was a pass interference call against the Stangs in the end zone to give the Tigers a 1st and goal from the 1 and they eventually scored to make it 17-6. The two point conversion was no good. I wonder if Snyder has a kicker?

4:11 left in the game.....we need to run the ball. Looking at an on-side kick and Snyder was off sides, we take the ball and need a couple of first downs and chew the clock up. Auston Davis got 9 1/2 yards. 2nd down, Banyard for a first down at the 43 yard line FIRST DOWN....run clock run. Time out Snyder, 3:30 left in the game. I'm typing as the game is going can you tell??LOLOL I am so loving this!!!!!

We just need 1 more 1st down. Clock running, Skye Green hit hard...
Gained 7 yards!

Skye Green again...short gain, clock running. 2:36 left, 3rd down and 4 at the Snyder 36 yard line.
Snyder called timed out...we weren't ready and WE had to call a time out. Coach Jackson looks livid.
Pitch to Joseph Banyard....1 1/2 yards shy of a first down...4th down...we got to go for it...has a first down!!!!! WAY TO GO BATMAN!!!!!! Snyder uses their last time out.

1st and 10 Snyder 30 yard line ..HUH???? WE PASS THE BALL????? SNYDER INTERCEPTS?????? What are we thinking?????????????????????????

Snyder has the first down at their 30??????????????????????????????

Matt Reigh runs a keeper 1:10 left and Snyder at their own 40. Under a minute to play. Next play incomplete. 57 seconds left in the game.
Shotgun Reigh....we got him in the backfield!!!!! 4th down and 9 for Snyder...penalty..off side.
on Snyder.

4th and 13 Snyder. Clock running with 30 seconds....We sack Reigh!!!!! We sacked Reigh!!!!!!!

BALLGAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Way to go Mustangs!!!!

The largest margin of victory is 49 points with the Mustangs being victorious by this amount in 1937,1968,& 1988.

Final Thoughts before game time

hor18.gif

Dear Mustangs,

My final entry before you board the bus.

This game is against yours (and every Mustang's) worst rival.

This game is in Snyder.

Play hard, play tough, but remember, you can smash mouths with class.

Play clean, play tough. This is YOUR game.

Remember, you are playing for a lot of things. When you come back to Sweetwater in 10-15 years, and you look at YOUR high school annual, the first page you will go to is the SNYDER game. You will make history tonight.

Go MUSTANGS!!!!!!!!!!!

ROCK ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lew

Are you kidding me?????

SnyderT-Shirt1.jpg

You have to be kidding me? This is all Snyder's got?

Some goofy looking T-shirt? They may as well made it pink........
That's is the lamest T-shirt I've ever seen.....

Ohhhhhhhhh, that really scares me.....

Geeez....I wouldn't use that that shirt for the bottom of my bird cage....How goofy and corny is that? I have another word in mind but it is a public forum.

OK Stangs, I heard Snyder Stadium holds 6,000 people. I heard Snyder owes Sweetwater about 500 more tickets. I heard that Sweetwater ISD will be checking drivers licenses to ensure the farmers on the tractors from Snyder don't try to come to Sweetwater to buy those tickets.

So if Sweetwater gets 1500 tickets, and Snyder gets 1500 tickets, who got the other 3,000 tickets?

Lew

It's Time.....

smumustang1.jpg

Dear Mustangs,

I was reading Texpreps.com and I notice Snyder is ranked #1 in the state according to them.

Let me mention all the benefits for beating Snyder Friday night:

1) Snyder will fall from the unbeaten ranks.

2) The win against Snyder pretty much assures Sweetwater get's the Number one ranking for Division 2 in the District, which means we would play the lower ranked teams in the playoffs.

3) Sweetwater has the overall lead in this series, but I don't know the exact numbers.

4) We get to avenge and bring revenge against Snyder for last year's defeat.

5) We get to beat them in Snyder.

6) I can think of a million reasons that are good by beating Snyder. Too many to list here.

I guess what I am trying to say is this game has alot of implications for the 2nd season. This is your opportunity to really demonstrate what Mustang football is all about. Good luck guys. Beat Snyder!

Go Red!!

Brittan Pittman

Pittman1.jpg

Dear Snyder,

My name is Brittan Pittman. My friends call me (you guessed it) the Pit Bull....

I know ya'll don't remember this, heck, I had to look it up myself. I went to our school library and looked in our old high school annual back in 1968 and found a guy by the name of David Redwine. The reason I bring this up is because I found out I'm sort of like him as far as a player. I'm pretty versatile, I play all over the field, and I guess I catch a fair amount of passes.

Well hey, the reason I'm writing this is because if you pay alot of attention to Batman, and Roadrunner, and Big Bird, and that Tasmanian Devil Mr. Fang Man, Bull Beckwith, and Crazy Man Adames, I'm thinking you guys are gonna have a lot of responsibilities to think about when the ball is snapped. That's what I hope happens is that you forget about me. Cause what's gonna happen is I'm gonna slide behind your linebackers and catch a pass from the Big Bird...and then it's gonna be a foot race.

I read where Mr. Redwine used to do that exact same thing! He was pretty good back in the day. He got a scholarship to the University of Houston and played right beside some fullback that went on to play for the Cowboys....Some guy named Robert Newhouse..Mr. Newhouse used to be called a fireplug....don't really know why...but anyways...enough about this. I'm gonna dedicate this game to David Redwine, and the Class of '69!

See ya.

And so it comes back to Snyder....

Horse635.gif

Dear Mustangs,

Yes, it comes back to Snyder.

The site of last year's playoff loss. The team that ended it for us last year. The team that had the luck of having a stranger walk through their door and run for 2800 yards last season. That Snyder.

To the Mustang Players:
You are a much better team than last year. You know it, I know it, and now, Snyder is about to know it. I know it goes without saying that we need to wash that bitter taste of a loss we felt last year out of our mouths and memory. This week is so much different than last week. Abilene Wylie is different than Snyder. Ya sort of have to like and appreciate Wylie for what they accomplished last year and without much recognition either.

That isn't the case with Snyder. Snyder has been, and will always be Sweetwater's most bitter rival. There is absolutely nothing I can say good about Snyder. They like to play that kid game of secrets. Like they are embrrassed to have a blog about them, where you have to pay (not me) to read their stinking paper? Who wants to read about Snyder anyways? And why do they always have to mouth off? Yeah, Snyder has always been the arch rival, always will be. You Mustangs have such a great opportunity Friday. You get to go back to Snyder and claim redemption!

Wade into them........wade into Snyder with the Red Sea behind you!

OK...with your first step on the bus to go to Snyder, repeat after me,.....it's a business trip, it's a business trip...Take care of the business dudes. No time for sight-seeing because there is nothing to see out there. Go Get em.........go get redemption! It's payback time!

Big Bird

Bigbird1.jpg

Howdy Snyder,

My name is Sonny Birdwell, Big Bird to my friends.

I am the Quarterback for the Mustangs. Don't let this goofy picture fool ya, I know what's going on. I just want to tell ya'll we are really looking forward to playing on ya'lls pretty grassy field. I'm not as fast as my cousin the Roadrunner, but I'm tellin ya, he's fast. He was the state runner up in the relays last year. In other words, he is like the 2nd fastest human in class 3A in the state!

Ya know what cracks me up about the Roadrunner? When he goes by ya, you might hear him say "beep beep"...hahahahaha it just cracks me up!

I'll tell ya about another guy I wouldn't mess with. That's ol Batman, Joseph Banyard. Batman is a real cool guy, but you give him a football and his dispostion is completely different. It's like when he runs with the ball, he's MAD! Make sure your helment is on pretty good before you even try to tackle him.

I also want to mention something about ol Bull Beckwith. I wouldn't be messin much with him either. He's a pretty cool guy, but he can get in your backfield on a pretty regular basis. I heard he's itchin to get back there. Oh....and I forgot to tell ya about my buddy Justin Adames....you want to talk about having an attitude? This guy is like a 1 man wrecking crew. The dude gets kinda crazy sometimes...but he's really a good guy. Something about black and gold sort of sets him off though.

Pssssst, hey Snyder, know what I heard? I heard we just might get one of our players back for ya'lls game. Now, I'm not gonna tell ya who that might be....but let's just say he and I see things about the same...hahahaha man, it's gonna be great to see him back!

Well, I just wanted to stop by and visit with ya'll a bit before Friday. We'll see ya then....
And oh by the way...you know, birds do fly right? If I were ya'll, ya'll might ought to be looking up in the sky somewhat......should be fun! The Pit Bull, Brittan Pittman to ya'll, is gonna be catching some of my passes...hahaha Pit Bull get it???? See Ya!

Mr. Inside

Dear Snyder,
My name is Auston Davis, Mr. Inside to you. I am really hoping you guys spread your defense out to cover the Jet Sweep we have. I hope you can stop Mr Outside, The Roadrunner, also known as Skye Green and the Batman. Please give them your utmost attention so I can sort of breeze up the middle....(see above) Ya'll take care now, ya hear?

Idea

(Thomas Metthe/Reporter-News)

Dear Mustangs,

I have an idea and would like ya'lls comments.

As ya'll know, there will be many of you traveling to Snyder Friday night.

What if everyone could meet at the old Midway Drive-in at 5:00 PM Friday, out on west Broadway for the Mustang Caravan.I would recommend call the Texas Department of Pulic Safety and see if there are any troopers that could escort the caravan over to Snyder? Everyone turn their lights on, have Mustang windshield flags....ya know, all roll into to Snyder at once with a DPS escort. It would be awesome!!!!

Let me know what ya'll think?

And don't forget the Jet Sweep dudes.......

I've been practicing on grass too!

Where the green grass grows.....

Batman 2.gif

Dear Snyder,

My name is "Batman" Banyard. You might remember me from last year, I wear the #3 Red jersey.

We remember last year. We remember how ya'll all made a big deal about the natural grass ya'll have over there, and how it was supposed to slow us down because we weren't used to natural grass. We remember all of it. By the way, our kicker is just fine. He's gonna be there too Friday night.

Listen. I just want to say congrats to ya'll on your playoff run last year.

Guess we will see ya'll Friday night. We have a few plans I think ya'll are gonna be surprised by. Ya know, we have some things you haven't seen on film yet. It should be fun. So, until then...ya'll take care. See ya Friday night.

Batman

Dear Snyder.....

fangman1.jpg

Dear Snyder,

As a community public service announcment, I need to caution ya'll on something that is coming to your town this Friday. You may have heard this person called, Fang Man, or Tasmanian Devil, but his real name is Brandon Fangman. I would hide anyone on your offensive side of the line because Mr. Fangman is about to pay ya'll a nice little visit.

Blast from the past

Dear Mustangs,
I found this neat article from an entry in the Odessa paper in 1945. I am assuming that the Jerry Smith of Sweetwater that they speak about was my old grade school principal at Southeast Elementary back in the early 60's. Good story.

Lew

The Players are Still Talking About this One

I am Jerry Smith of the Sweetwater Team in 1945 that scored the controversial touchdown for Sweetwater. The ball was over the goal line; I should know that for sure as I had the ball in my hand. The ball was booted around considerably before the recovery. Blondy Cross despised Sweetwater! He often tried to discredit the Mustangs. The touchdown that should have been in question was Odessas winning touchdown (?) in the 4th quarter by J. W. Thompson. Sweetwater's left end, Fischer Mays was so obviously clipped that the official took his flag out of his pocket to throw it, saw Thompson was going to score, and put the flag back in his pocket. This is plainly seen on the film of the game. Head Coach Pat Gerald still had this film when he died. If Odessa's game film is available take a look at both controversial touchdowns. The Star Telegram article listed Kenneth Timmons as scoring Sweetwater's touchdown. He did hit the ball after the block punt but I scored the touchdown.

According to the program of the game it was played on Monday, November 12,1945, however, I am not sure why unless it was Armistice Day. Of the 11 [players] on the starting lineup there are 5 who are deceased. Four of the Starting lineup were together at a Class Reunion in October, 2001 and this game was rehashed over and over. The outcome was still the same. ---We Lost!

This afternoon at coffee I visited with Winston Robison #49 RH of the team [Sweetwater] and I asked him to relate to me how he remember the game. He remembers it almost word for word as I have told it to you.

One local Marine that had just returned from the South Pacific kicked in the Referees door at the Blue Bonnet Hotel seeking the referee who failed to call the clip. (I was not there but I have heard this story over and over from different people) This clip occurred in front of the Odessa bench. Blondy Cross was standing on the 30-yard line on the Sweetwater side. He could not have seen the questionable touchdown that I scored from there. Had we played the game 10 times Odessa would have won 9 but on this date we all feel we were the Best!

Thanks for bringing ole' memories,
Jerry B. Smith, Sweetwater, Texas

The Second Sweetwater Touchdown
Was a Gift; Ball Was Yard From Goal

Odessa American Sports Writer
Tuesday, November 13, 1945

Odessa 13, Sweetwater 12, Plenty Close that Odessa beat a ball club that played better football than it did. Sounds screwy, doesn't it? Well, that's not our opinion, but that's what the young gentlemen of the Broncho team had to say about their efforts.

We don't agree with them. After absorbing mountains of anti-flu sulfa drugs for four days, how could any one expect those l0 gallant lads, who had been under a physician's care, to turn in a better performance?

That one-point was good enough for us, fellows, and we know we speak for the rest of the 27,000 fans who are Odessa.

Those who were close-up, and that includes 11 Bronchos say the official pulled a boner in giving Sweetwater that touchdown after the blocked punt. We talked with Coach Clayton Hopkins and some of the Bronchos after the game,

"Honestly, Coach, that ball was a full yard away from the goal line," was the way J. W. Thompson put it.

And we were sure that such was the case, because of all the wonders that has occurred in a football-mad West Texas this year, San Angelo's Blondy Cross agrees that the Sweetwater touchdown was a "gift". Says Blondy***

"The punt partially was blocked. After the ball was batted around over much of the southeast corner of the gridiron, a Sweetwater tackle named Jerry Smith recovered the hide one yard from the goal stripe.

"It should have been Sweetwater first, down and one yard to go for the touchdown.

"But an official stood over Jerry Smith, saw him through apparently filmed eyes recover the ball a yard away from the goal, nudge his shoulders closer to that last stripe, then jerk the ball from where he obtained hold of it moved in across the goal stripe.

"We stood there right on top of the ball ourselves - and felt sure the official would move the ball back to where it was dead. The official suddenly came out of his bent‑over position and ruled "touchdown" . .'. it lacked a yard of being a touchdown! ... Repeat The kid recovered the ball a yard inside the field wriggled and edged his shoulders toward the goal line ----- then with the ball not over the goal tape yet jerked the ball over and placed it in the end zone. Repeat No. 2 The official standing right over the boy, an survey should or could have seen what happened. But he called a ''dead ball," that had been advanced two different ways, a touchdown.Sweetwater might have scored from the one-yard with legitimately first down and one yard to go.Sweetwater could nave fumbled or been thrown for some loses.

Here's what the Star Telegram's Jim McMullen said about the game:

Odessa Nips Sweetwater,
13-12, 3-AA Classic

By JIM McMULLEN
Fort Worth Star-Telegram Sports Writer
Tuesday, November 13, 1945

SWEETWATER, Nov. 13. - By the margin of one slim, bitterly disputed point Odessa's Bronchos rode on at the top of the Texas, Interscholastic football heap Monday edging out an inspired Sweetwater Mustang eleven, 13 -12, before more than 10,000 fans on a sun-baked, crisp afternoon.

Credit Fullback J. W. Thompson with another notch of fame, as it was the, line-running, swivel-hipped lad who was the difference in the' two ball clubs for the day. J. W. plowed over for the first touchdown in the second quarter, to send his team out front and then in the third period he galloped 39 yards for the marker that gave Odessa its Victory. The all-important point after touchdown was kicked 'by Byron Townsend after the first score.

But Townsend and his 'mates had to' be at their very best to beat a Mustang team that simply wouldn't be defeated until the final, whistle sounded, A couple of lads Doil Feagan and Don Lambert, came close to matching the Performance of the truly great Thompson.

Coming events cast, shadows in the first minute of the game that Sweetwater wasn't going to be a shove-over. Odessa received the opening kickoff and on a wide lateral Thompson was thrown for an 18-yard loss back on his own five-yard marker.

J. W. managed to pick up six and then Townsend punted out of bounds on his own 47.

The Mustangs weren't able to do much with this break as Lambert gained four through center and then Sweetwater lost the ball 11 on a fumble that was recovered by Tommy Tucker on the Mustang 45.

The Sweetwater line gave up one first down and then showed surprising strength to stymie the vaunted Odessa running game. Townsend punted out beautifully on the Sweetwater 22. Sweetwater couldn't move and 'A short punt was taken by Odessa on the Mustang 38. Odessa seemed on its way but a fumble, was recovered by Feagan on his own 48 and the game revolved into a defensive affair with the Mustangs surprising even their most ardent supporters.

Odessa made its first scoring move late in the first period, cashing in for seven points on the third play of the second quarter. The move started after Lambert punted out of bounds on the Odessa 38.

Thompson plowed for one at center and then on a great spinning run at end added 11 yards and first down. It was Townsend again for two and then a five‑yard penalty was inflicted against the Bronchos. Thompson, made four of these back and then the stocky, black‑haired youth started wide to the left, cut back sharply and raced 30 Yards before he was finally nailed.

Sonny Holderman racked up three at center and Pug Gabrel added six through the middle. Thompson crashed for six on the final play of the first quarter.

'The Mustangs were penalized five on the first play of the second period, placing the ball on the seven-yard line. Thompson on two battering plunges at the middle went over the double stripe and Townsend kicked the extra point.

And that was all of the scoring in the first half, although it wasn't all of the fireworks. Late in the period, Gordon Headlee, intercepted a Mustang Pass on the Sweetwater 10 and returned it to the eight. But the clock caught Odessa before it could carry over for another score.

Sweetwater moved back into the ball game, to the surprise of the spectators, in the third period taking the opening kickoff an moving straight for six points. Lambert returned the kick from his own four to the 33 on a great run featured by some excellent. Mustang blocking.

Lambert then passed to Winston Robinson for a first down on the Odessa 49. Feagan and Lambert, aided by a 5-yard penalty, made a first on the Bronco 38 and Lambert, on two lambasting drives carried to the 27.

From the 27 Feagan weaved for seven and an aerial, Lambert to Fisher Mays carried to the 16. Feagan and Lambert collaborated to reach the seven from where, on fourth down, Lambert flipped a pass to Quarterback Shaff Degaisch for the touchdown. Lambert missed the extra point.

Sweetwater took the lead early in the fourth quarter when Odessa was thrown in a hole by a miss-judged punt that rolled to the Bronch 4-yard line, Townsend punted out short and the kick rolled back toward the goal. The ball was, batted around by several, players and finally recovered over the Odessa goal by Kenneth Timmons. Lambert again failed to kick .,the extra point.

Underclassmen produce....

Davis.jpg
Sweetwater running back Auston Davis (36) runs through a Wylie defender during the second quarter of the Bulldogs' 26-3 win on Friday night, Oct. 7, 2005 at the Mustang Bowl in Sweetwater. (Thomas Metthe/Reporter-News)

Dear Mustangs,

One of the good things about the Mustangs is there seems to be some underclassmen already making a niche for themselves on the varsity.

Names like J.J. McCoy, Rufus McCann, and now, Auston Davis. This is in addition to Sky Green and Joseph Banyard.

Sweetwater has the lowest enrollment for schools compared to Abilene Wylie and Snyder, but Sweetwater continually has a slew of underclassmen that have some good talent to draw upon. Now I'm no football expert, but it sounded like the middle of the Wylie defense could have been tested a little more with all the room that Davis was seeing last night. It appeared that Wylie was pinching the corners to keep the Jet Sweep from becoming a factor. It worked. Wylie held the Mustangs to 3 points. Going forward though, it seems that Mr. Davis might just be a good option for going right up the middle in case Snyder has the same plan of pinching the corners. I'm sure the Sweetwater coaches noticed that.

Lew

Ouch!

Didn'tsee.jpg

Dear Mustangs,

It just wasn't our night.
Abilene Wylie led 6-3 at halftime, and then turned on their own jets to defeat the Mustangs, 26-3.

Give credit to the wylie, Wylie defense for keeping the speed contained to the inside not letting the speed freaks of Banyard and Greene outside with their Jet Sweep.

Abilene Wylie pretty much dismantled the Big Red Offensive Machine.

Wow, what is this?

Candy Reagan from GoFridayNight.com (4th quarter Wylie 26-3) said:
The extra point is no good. There's a skirmish on the field.

Candy Reagan from GoFridayNight.com (4th quarter Wylie 26-3) said:
The coaches are yelling at each other, the crowd is booing, and the refs call offsetting penalties.

23:03 10/07/2005

That to me is just a shame. Players fighting on the field? Coaches yelling at one another? That's a shame.

Let me direct this comment to both Sweetwater and Abilene Wylie. I don't know who created that mini-fiasco, but regardless, I think sitting far from the game as I am, it is pretty embarrassing when 2 state-ranked teams from the very same district play each other and a fight breaks out. Both teams should be ashamed.

Gentlemen, if you are going to represent District 4-3A, please do it with CLASS. Someone please post on here why there should be any reason two quality coaches should be yelling at each other. I would like to know.

Let District play begin!!!

Webad.jpg

Dear Mustangs,

It's time.

Now before I begin my comments about District play and this week's opponent Abilene Wylie, I think some clarification is in order. I had a comment from a fan earlier this week thinking I was being "rude" for comments or graphics on this blog. Let me assure everyone, nothing could be further from the truth with my intent.

In case anyone has forgotten, high school football is a GAME. Yes, it is a game with fans, it is a game with players, parents, heck a whole town. But I just want to mention that there are many many worse things going on in the world today than losing a high school football game. I was lead to believe games were supposed to be fun!

Of course I'm a fan also. I would like nothing more than for my Mustangs to win a state championship. Does that mean I am gonna hate and go bonkers if we don't? Nope, not in the least.

I wonder sometimes about people who take games too far. I am surprised at parents I used to see at Little League baseball games hollering at their kids, hollering at the umps....it was sometimes soo bad I felt so bad for the kids and the umps.

My attempt on this blog is to simply make it fun. I really don't want to get bogged down in stats too much. Newspaper accounts do that a whole lt better than myself. Let me also mention that I don't get paid to write a blog. I do it because I enjoy it! Hmmmmm, what a concept, doing something because a person enjoys doing it. Let me also mention this a free country. What I mean is, if YOU want to start a blog, there are tons of places to do that for free. Bottom line is I'm very proud of Sweetwater and the high school and all the parents, players, coaches, and fans. I think I'm fortunate to be able to put my 2 cents worth into it by my little blog here. My intent is to give Sweetwater some recognition, and to demonstrate just how proud I am of that little corner of west Texas. I mean no harm to anyone.
Let me also add here that for anyone that reads blogs, blogs is a word that means Web Logs. Blogs are different than newspaper accounts and newspaper reporting. Blogs are more opinionated. Blogs are more personal, from the writer's thinking. If blogs and specifically this blog offends you, DON'T READ IT. You have that right, just like I have a right to write it.

Now, let's talk about the week to open up District play.
I will start this by saying I have tremendous respect for Abilene Wylie. I have even corresponded with some very nice Wylie fans. I have never met a person that is a Wylie fan I didn't like. I have thought in the past and still do, that Wylie never got the publicity they deserved from last year's state championship team. Personally, I feel like this week is a game where I am playing against a family member in a game of football. I want to win the game, but I want success for them too.

With all of that said, I now have to get in my "game mode".

To the fine folks of Abilene.

I respect the heck out of Abilene Wylie. I like ya.

But we ain't skeered of ya. (smile)

I'm on my way out of town for a business meeting this week. I'll write more when I get my laptop plugged in to the hotel room tonight.
Have a great week, and remember ya'll, it's just a game!

WHEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sweetwater 34, Levelland 31

What a game!!!!!

Before I begin, I want to preface that I don't have exact numbers. So, I may be off here and there a bit, please bear with me. I have to get up at 3:00AM and travel to College Station.

What a game the Mustangs won!!!

Justin Adames got Sweetwater on the board with a 67 yard scamper, Levelland came back..7-6 Mustangs.

Joseph (Batman) Banyard scampered 70 yards, and the Lobos came back and added a 2 point conversion 14-14.

Levelland had missed an extra point but made a 42 yard field goal?? What kind of game is this? Lobos 17-14 at the half.
Sweetwater had the ball about 4 minutes the entire half! That means Levelland had the ball about 20 minutes. Unbelievable!

Part of the problem there was two turnovers by the Mustangs.

I don't know how many 3rd and long situations that the Lobos converted, but it seemed like they converted every one of them. I really don't know why they didn't pass more because that was there best offensive weapons. At one 3rd and 10, they converted and made a 40 yard pass play work..it was unbelievable.

Then with time running out in the 4th quarter Sonny Birdwell hit Brendan Pittman down the middle for a 1st down.
And then with Levelland leading the game, 31-27, 1:01 left to play in the game, from the 11 yard line, Joseph Banyard went left, stiff-armed the entire defense of Levelland, and scored!!!

Cudos to Brandon Fangman, and Clayton for getting after the quarterback.

I can't even describe how the last possession went for Levelland. All I know is they had 4th down and 10, 13 seconds left ball on the 39 yard line of Sweetwater, and Russell Clayton sealed the deal for the Mustangs. Great job!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll have more later, but I think this was great experience for the Mustangs. Great job guys!!!!! Great job!!!!
