Am I missing something here?

Dear Mustangs,

One of the good things about life is you wake up one day, and everything you thought you knew doesn't apply any longer.

Now before I voice my rant, I just told ya'll things change. I don't claim to be an expert so if I am making a mistake, or if I'm in error on this, please let me know. I'm not an expert so if you can comment or help me understand I would appreciate it.

How does Cuero go from Division 1 in 3A to Division 2 in 3A during the football season?

I mean, can't all this shuffling around be done BEFORE the season starts? I noticed that Soulthlake Carroll went from Division 1 in 5A to Division 2 in 5A. What's going on here?

Here is a quote from a great website, Texpreps.com.

"There is only one change among the nine division leaders this week and it isn't related to a defeat. Since Cuero is headed to Class 3A's division II playoffs, the Gobblers are being promoted to the top position.

Spring Westfield (5A-I), Southlake Carroll (5A-II), Highland Park (4A-I), La Marque (4A-II), West Orange-Stark (3A-I), Newton (2A-I), Celina (2A-II) and Chilton (1A) continue to impress and all appear headed to finish the regular season undefeated. Only a handful of lower ranked teams lost last week but none of the biggies were among the losers.

The only thing currently worse than the current water-downed three team, two division system in classes 5A through 2A is the attempt to determine who fits where in TexPreps rankings. Having four playoff teams in 5A and two divisions in both 1A and six-man football could be a worse situation.

It is possible that both Southlake Carroll and Longview could wind up in the 5A-I bracket and Newton might go the Division II route in 2A. Because of a new enrollment figure for 2005, Schertz Clemens will wind up in 5A-II, thus weakening Division I even more.

However, all we can do it apply our best forecasts and clear up any mess after the end of the regular season. TexPreps thanks all those who have brought some of these items to our attention and we appreciate your readership."

Baloney.....
They change Cuero to Division 2 in 3A and they take over the #1 ranking?

Folks, something has gone wrong with our high school system. But that's just my opinion.

Class 3A-II

1. Cuero
2. Cameron
3. Tatum
4. Dallas Madison
5. Sweetwater
6. Snyder
7. Gilmer
8. Bellville
9. Marlin
10. Wimberley

No expert here, Lew, but I cannot help but agree with you. You put it very well and accurately. Seems to me you establish all those divisions at the start of the season and KEEP it that way until next season. Could they drop Southlake Carrol down and let them play Roscoe for the Class A championship? Makes the same sense to me.

Best Regards. Keep up the good work.

The school with the largest student enrollment(of the three teams making the playoffs in any given district) automatically goes D1. The remaining two teams go into the D2 bracket. This is sometimes not determined until the last district game.

Thanks Paul,

I appreciate your comments. After I slept on it, I think the confusion for me was as it relates to schools and polls. Some polls rank teams by division 1 and division 2. Like you mentioned, it's possible that a team could go from division 1 to division 2 based on their record? Now I'm making myself confused again. At any rate, in the case of Cuero, they went from division 1 poll to division 2 poll. I guess it will all work out. We don't pay attention to polls anyway right?

Lew, I don't know about the Division 1 and Division 2 POLLS. However, Division 1 is ALWAYS the big school bracket. Division 2 is small school.

As far as playoffs are concerned, the reps from each division aren't determined until the 3 playoff teams are determined.

(For example, IF Wylie didn't make the playoffs but Sweetwater, Snyder and Clyde did, then SNYDER would go in as the big school because their enrollment is higher than Sweetwater or Clyde. IF Snyder and Wylie didn't make the playoffs but Sweetwater, Clyde and Merkel did, Sweetwater would be the big school based on their enrollment.)

BTW, here are the enrollment figures for our district when football season began:

Wylie-854;
Snyder-764;
Sweetwater-640;
Clyde-510 and
Merkel-417.

Most districts in the State of Texas have that much disparity because UIL won't go ahead and create that Class 6A or Super 5A.

Clear as mud?
