Lady Stangs beat Snyder, clinch berth
SNYDER - Everything that needed to happen did for the Sweetwater volleyball team on Tuesday.
The Lady Mustangs, losers of two straight entering their final regular season match at Snyder, rebounded with a 25-27, 25-15, 25-17, 29-27 victory to sew up a playoff berth out of District 4-3A for the second straight year.
Tika Smith had an incredible 27 kills - plus nine blocks and eight digs - to pace Sweetwater (14-16 overall), which clinched the No. 2 playoff berth with a 3-3 record. The Lady Mustangs will begin the playoffs early next week.
Lamesa (6-0) will be the No. 1 seed in 4-3A and Greenwood (2-4) is the other playoff representative. Snyder could have forced a three-way tie for second place with a win Tuesday, but instead finishes with a 1-5 record.
“It was a great win, said Sweetwater coach Liz Miller. “We hadn't been very successful on the road lately, so it helped the girls get their confidence back before going into the playoffs. We decided to really focus on staying mentally strong. It's hard to play in Snyder's gym and we knew it was their last shot at a playoff position.
Other individual standouts were Lauren Doak with 20 kill assists and seven digs; Mattie Doak with 13 digs, three kills, four kill assists and two blocks; Megan Kamer with seven kills, three digs and three blocks; Ciara Ortega with 11 digs, three kills and one kill assist; Meagan Spradlin with seven digs, nine kill assists and one ace; Leigh Ann Sims with five kills and sev-en assists; Bennie Smith with six kills and one dig; Whitney Gomez with six digs; and Andrea Cleckler with one dig.

Congratulations to the Lady Mustangs. That is great news!!! We did not have sports for girls when I was in High School. I think about it sometimes and say, "What a pity. How could we do that to girls?" Anyway that is mostly past and better for all of us.
Here in Deming, N.M. we don't have much to be proud of in the way of sports except for our girl's Volleyball team. They won State last year and should be pretty much a shoo-in for State this year.
Well, our boy's FB team is trying.....just struggling.
Go Lady Mustangs and Go Mustang Football team. We
support you!!!
