Thanks for your comment Will. I live about 20 miles from Bridgeport and was able to listen to the game on the radio. Their announcers said they thought that Bridgeport had a better chance going for two, than just the single extra point. Just FYI, Bridgeport did not convert a SINGLE extra point, or extra two points after thier touchdowns. Monahans got a total of 7 extra points which was the difference in this game.
From the sounds of it....Monahans loves to run right up the middle...one of their backs had 180 yards rushing, and the other had 90 yards.
I wonder if Dick Butkus would come out of retirement for one game??
Lew,
It was a hard fought game. I said after the first two touchdowns and missed extra points that those extra points were going to be the difference in the game. Monahans is tough and they bring a great crowd. Next week should be another cardiac game.
Just got back from the Monahans-Bridgeport game. Ironic that Bridgeport had 7 TD's Monahans had 6, but Bridgeport didn't win. They didn't make a single PAT. The first attempt was a bad snap. We think maybe they just didn't have a deep snapper because #3 kicked it out of the end zone on every kickoff!
Monahans gave up yards around the ends all night.
See y'all Friday night at Midland's Grande Communications Stadium, 7:30 pm, on the HOME side!!!
Lew---make sure I told you right before you post my thoughts...Friday night (December 2nd) at 7:30 at Grand Communications Stadium in Midland on the HOME side. Janie
Looking at the stats for Bridgeport-Monahans . Bridgeport had 25 rushing attempts for 235 yards against Monahans 50 attempts for 217 yards . RB for Bridgeport , Colin Jones made 18 rushing attempts for 234 yards . Monahans defense CANNOT STOP THE RUN . Bridgeport and Monahans both have great teams . Their game was a very emotional game just Like Sweetwater and Iowa Park .
I am trying to find a way to get from Arlington to Midland by game time on Friday .(without missing work) That will be a challenge .
Now , which side of the field will the Snyder Tigers , be seated on ? I'm thinking the Mustang side .
I don't want to rain on the Mustang's parade here, but I hope we can just run controlled drives and wear Monahans out. I know there were lots of Sweetwater fans at the Monahans game. I would really really like some opinions on Monahans and the matchup with Sweetwater.
Monahans has no problem STOPING THE RUN!! They stop the run on Bridgeport all night, as they have done with other great teams. It's the passing that Monahans has a problem with.
Monahans/Sweetwater: As I have said in the past, "Mirror images maybe not, Powerhouses I think so!!" I believe the last one with the pigskin will win this one!! Bridgeport was the toughest team by far that Monahans has faced yet. Good thing too.. This helps Monahans with any situation that Sweetwater may/will throw at them. I believe that the last three games Monahans has faced will help them beat Sweetwater!! IMO!! Prediction: Monahans by 3
Hey guys,
Just wanted to say that this is an interesting blog. I graduated from Monahans in '03, and I can tell you that we're in for a great game this Friday. Great stadium, great fans, and two great teams. One thing though, don't underestimate the Loboes, because them boys have heart. That's what got them to where they are today, and that's what's going to get them through the rest of the way.
To the Monahans fans: We never underestimate our opponents. That is foolish. You have to respect any team that can get this far in the play-offs. However, I remind you that year in and year out the Mustangs have a great tradition. It doesn't happen in just one year. You have a great team, but make no mistake, you will be playing a great team.
Guys, I'm from Bridgeport. It's true. We ran & passed on Monahans all night. But our placekicker, Jason Garrett (also our Middle LB & punter) was knifed the previous week on a punt & was out with torn tendons - knee). Huggins #3, can kick the PATs, but there was trouble with snaps & concern over blocks. We can deep-snap - we run the shotgun. They were just more confident with the 2-pt try. We had been successful with it most of the season. But it definitely was our downfall in this one. It should never have come to those. Should be a great game in Midland. Wish I could see it.
Two great programs. Two great schools. Looking forward to this one. I am a MHS graduate, so my blood runs green. My family and I have been away from West Texas for about 12 years. We now reside in southeast Texas where High School football is big. My children attended class 4A Port Neches Groves High school and were active in sports, etc. PNGHS has a fan following like no other in Texas. My son played in the State game against Stephenville in 1999 where 34,000 PNGHS fans were in attendance. However, my comment is this: There is nothing equivalent to WEST TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL. The traditions, rivalries, etc. RESPECT for the opposing team is taught and practiced by the majority of the towns out west. I try to explain to friends and co-workers here the atmosphere, excitement, and FUN that is WEST TEXAS FOOTBALL. From class 5A to 6 man, it is simply a way of life in WEST TEXAS. A game like what is on the menu this week in Midland is unexplainable. It will be super charged. For those who talk trash about the game, they are probably the ones who have not had a kid play or they just can't see the big picture. When these student bodies put in the long hours of practice, be it football, band, cheerleading, etc. it is to be appreciated. As a parent I have seen the glory days as well as the times when my son and daughter would put everything that they had into a day of practice and come home give out and wondering if it was worth it. Our kids who are active in their respective schools are not couch potatoes and I sometimes wonder how they fit it all in. Monahans and Sweetwater deserve to be at this point in the season and hopefully each community will RESPECT the accompolishments of the opposing school. I know that the coaches and teams will; win or loose. Don't take WEST TEXAS athletic programs for granted. They are the BEST in TEXAS because of the teachers, coaches, and communities that know what LIFE is about.

Why did Bridgeport not try to kick an extra point? That would have won it right?
