OBSERVATIONS FROM COWBOYS/EAGLES

Wow...what a game. It looked like there for a while that we were going to mop the floor with Philly. However, they proved to be quite the dynamic offense...a lot better than I gave them credit for.
My observations from last night:
- Donovan McNabb is a better QB than he's ever been in his career.
- Romo showed a lot of poise to be able to come back and play well after the fumble in the EZ and INT happened in about a five minute span...showed a great deal of maturity.
- Our defense is opportunistic. We couldn't stop Philly ALL night except when we had to. Those two sacks on the last drive by Ellis and Ware were coverage sacks. Credit our secondary for not letting McNabb find an open receiver. That was an unbelieveable defensive series. The other times we stopped them were their first two drives when they had to settle for field goals.
- I bet Jerry Jones was feeling pretty good about his Felix Jones pick after that KO return. The guy we passed up, Rashard Mendenhall, hasn't done much so far this year.
- We made some really good halftime adjustments. I don't know what they were exactly (since I wasn't in the locker room) but at the beginning of the third quarter we were gaining yards on the ground (which we weren't able to do in the first half) and were stopping Brian Westbrook (which we weren't able to do in the first half).
- Jason Witten continues to seperate himself from the league's top tight ends. I don't think there's anyone else playing as well as he is right now. Many people don't or can't appreciate what a good route runner he is...
- Romo to Owens was a genius call on 3rd and long. We averaged about 9 yards on our third downs last night...not a good stat...BUT...we converted most of them. That's something I'd like to see changed though. We're not going to win the Super Bowl if we continue averaging more than nine yards on third down.
- Our offensive and defensive lines completely and effectively wore down the Eagles last night. Our D line especially played really good. If we were playing against anyone but McNabb, we would have had about seven sacks last night. He is unbelieveable at escaping pressure.
- No one made a big deal about Romo's great move in the pocket right before he threw the pick. That was good to see...all great QBs have eyes in the back of their head.
- My stupid DVR messed up and I missed the DeSean Jackson fumble...kind of glad I did. My wife got on to me for screaming at the DVR even after the game was over. I missed 13 minutes of the game (real time)...about four minutes game time. Unacceptable.
- We had a lot of standouts in the secondary last night. Adam Jones, Anthony Henry and Mike Jenkins made some really impressive plays.
- Zach Thomas is in Pro Bowl form. He sniffed out some plays last night that could have been killers.
All in all I thought it was a good game. Our defense needs to play more consistent but did step up in crunch time and only allowed seven points in the second half.
If we were playing that game in Philly...we lose...no question.
We better get rid of some of those costly penalties (face masks specifically) and mental mistakes if we're going to beat Green Bay on the road.
