Game On

The work is done. Some changes have been made, but hard work has been put in on the practice field and in the skull sessions. You could go up to the practice field every evening after practice and see young men still working on their own in their area of expertise whether it be firing off the line quicker on the snap, throwing and catching passes, or kicking the ball; even managers were volunteering their time on the field. Most of the Coahoma Bulldogs will go into their game #1 - in better shape and more importantly, #2 - with a better and stronger attitude.

Tonight it started off with a block party in front of the school where the community joined in on a pep rally for the boys featuring the Coahoma Varsity and JV Cheerleaders and a great show by the Coahoma Big Red Band and Flag Squad. Tomorrow the JV squad of Freshman will drive to Merkel in their first district game, and then Friday it will be Homecoming.

Game On Bulldogs.

Open week

Bulldogs are hard at work starting Monday with 4 hours of classwork, studying films, playbooks, etc. They are definitely not where they wanted to be at this point: record, mentally, and physically. This blogger knows that Captains' Blaine Kerby, Jacob McCain, and Justin Cline along with some of the other seniors have been spending extra time on tradegies and films with the coaches. This Friday will be boring, but district begins the following week starting off with homecoming.

In the Trenches

It is said, "Whomever wins in the trenches, is usually the team that wins the game." In the game between Coahoma and Ballinger, this statement was so true. The first quarter was even and the score was 0-0. Ballinger began to take control of the line both on offense and defense, and it would turn out to be all Ballinger, 41-0. Coahoma's QB Blaine Kerby would see his 100 yard game streak end; after running for 164 yards against Reagan County and then 100 against state ranked Roscoe, he would gain only 6 yards in 13 carries; having 5 sacks for a minus 30 yards was the big hit on his average. He did complete 9 of 16 passes for 80 yards with WR Jason Gonzalez pulling in 5 of the completions for 49 yards. If there was a bright spot in the game, it would be that 7 of the 9 passes were caught by wide receivers, a trouble area in the last two games. Sophomore RB Corey Roberts ran 6 times for 25 yards and caught 2 passes for 15 yards.

The defense after the 1st quarter still has not found a way to not give up the big play. Sophomore Keagan Hunt and Kerby would create a few bright moments with outstanding plays for the defense as did Junior Blaine Henderson.

The best news now for the Coahoma Bulldogs is that they have a off week to get in better shape, search out the areas that needs the most attention, and put it all together. As bad as it seems, the areas to work on are few in putting this team together and being a play-off contender. Coach Cates and his staff are very capable, and the talent is there.

Whooped

The only thing that comes to mind in Coahoma's loss to Roscoe is a old country whooping. Roscoe did everything right in almost every area of their game especially at nose guard position. Mr. Brown, you are a highlight film by yourself. Coahoma still is weak in the area of giving up the long ball, and Roscoe definitely took advantage of this weakness.

QB Blaine Kerby did rush again for the century mark. There was an improvement in the pass reception area also. Kerby passed for 87 yards have 9 passes completed in 14 attempts. Sophomore Fullback P J Daylong pulled in 5 of the passes for 51 yards, Domingo Rodriquez caught 2 passes for 20 yards. Sophomore RB Corey Roberts scored his first varsity TD with a 13 yard run. There was also a increase in defensive tackle assist; the Sophomore linebackers
Daylong, Roberts, and Michael Gonzalez are showing a steady improvement plus Coahoma registered its first interception of the season via Sophomore Keagan Hunt who had a recovered fumble earlier in the game.

If Coahoma is able to solve its defensive long ball problem and continues to improve its passing game to go with a steady running game, the win column should start showing a steady growth.

If

Coahoma’s game with Reagan County comes right down to that giant word, “if. If 1 of 3 possible TD catches had been made, if 1 of 3 big play mistakes had not been made on defense, or if the last pass thrown had not been made, Coahoma could have won the game instead of losing 25-22. Always that big word, “if. Maybe, if Coahoma’s running back Donnie Garcia had not left in the first quarter with a hyper-extended elbow, and if the starting fullback David Rodriquez had not left in the first quarter with a dislocated elbow, the outcome could have been different. Who knows; the areas Coahoma has to work on, the coaches already knew about and having been addressing each week slowly but surely.

On the brighter side, QB Blaine Kerby rushed 20 times for 164 yards scoring 3 touchdowns and 1 2pt conversion. Sophomore Corey Roberts filled in at RB and rushed for 55 yards in 6 carries, and backup Sophomore fullback P J Daylong ran the ball 9 times for 41 yards. All the rushing yards were compiled behind Coahoma’s big lineman that can only get better.
