Wolves Close, But No Cigar

The Colorado Wolves got close to a win last Friday night, but as they say, close is only good in horseshoes and hand grenades!
The Wolves had a bad case of the turnover blues in the first half, two of which helpe the Coahoma Bulldogs come up with 14 first half points, one on a blocked punt while the other from an interception.
The Wolves came back in the second half to tie things up at 14-14 early in the final period. The visitors from the West, however, came back late in the contest on a drive that used 10 plays and more than five minutes of clock on the drive that began on their own 17 yard line.
The touchdown, a one-yard plunge by Bulldog quarterback Blaine Kerby, came with 1:18 left to go in the game.
The Wolves used four passing plays in the last minute, but all fell incomplete.
The Wolves hope to end the skid this Friday night when they take on the Merkel Badgers in Merkel with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff slated.

Bulldogs Spoil Wolves Homecoming

Speed kills, and Stamford has plenty of it to burn.
The Colorado Wolves found that to be true last Friday night when the speedy Detrich Mays rushed for 169 yards on 13 carries, scoring three touchdowns along the way enroute to a 45-6 whipping of the Wolves.
Freshman Jamarcus Denson was the leading rusher for the Wolves with 53 yards on 11 carries. The only touchdown for the Wolves came with 10:07 left to go in the first half when Kolby Free hit junior Nathan hawkins on a 60-yard touchdown pass.
The Bulldogs had 21 first downs to 2 for C-City, had 333 yards rushing to the Wolves 28, and had 104 yards passing to 77 by the Wolves.
The Wolves go on the road to STanton this Friday night set on nailing down their first win of the season, and in conference play.

Second Half Dooms Wolves In District opener

The Colorado Wolves opened district play on the road against the Haskell Indians last Friday night, but a second half eruption by the Indians doomed the upset chance for the Wolves.
The Wolves drew first blood on a long run by freshman Jamarcus Denson, and after a successful PAT the Wolves found theirselves with a lead for the first time this season.
After Haskell answered with a touchdown of their own to cut the lead to 7-6, the Wolves came back with another touchdown, this time on a one yard touchdown by quarterback Kolby Free after a 29-yard touchdown catch and run by junior wide receiver Simon Reyna.
After taking a 13-6 lead into the second half, the sky began to fall on the Wolves.
Haskell came out of the second half fired up and ready to play as they scored three third quarter touchdowns to take control of the contest.
The final score was Haskell 40, Colorado 13.
"It certainly hurt when we lost three of our starting seniors as well as our freshman running back," said head coach Frank Johnson. "Things just began to snowball and we couldn't run our formations that we had planned because we didn't have any backs left."
This week the Wolves host the Stamford Bulldogs in their homecoming tilt.
Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Sonora Blasts Wolves 28-0

The Colorado Wolves lost to the Sonora Broncos in their final pre-district game of the season last Friday night at Wolves Stadium by a score of 28-0.
The strong Bronco defense held the Wolves to 52 total yards of offense, 33 on the ground and 19 through the airways.
The Broncos scored 21 points in the second quarter to break open what looked like to be a good defensive battle between the two squads. The third touchdown of the quarter came with 21 seconds left to go before the half on a busted assignment.
"We have two weeks to get prepared for Haskell, and our first district game," said head coach Frank Johnson. "All eight teams will start district play at 0-0 with everyone having a chance to win district. Making the playoffs is still one of our goals. Nothing has happened to change that. We may be 0-3, and I hate that, but we still have as much chance as anyone in the district."
After an open week the Wolves will open district play against the Haskell Indians who are 2-0 after a bye week.

wolves Lose To Grape Creek Eagles 34-6

In what was built up to be a duel between two evenly matched teams did not live up to expectations.
In fact, it didn't live up to any hoopla whatsoever.
Playing in the first game of the second annual Sammy Baugh Classic in Sweetwater, the Wolves were held to only six points as they went down in defeat to the Eagles by a score of 34-6. The Only score for the Wolves came early in the third quarter when senior Jerrod Ward, playing in his first game of the season, scored on a 58-yard gallop with 11:33 left to game in the quarter. The point after kick by Ward did not prove true leaving Grape Creek up 20-6 at that point.
Ward ended the game with 113 yards on six carries while Wolves quarterback Kolby Free wound up with 92 yards on 20 carries. Free also completed three of 10 passes for 18 yards on the night.
"Unless we learn to play with better technique, and learn to play better as a team we are not going to win many games," said head coach/AD Frank Johnson. "Our problem is that when we do something wrong we begin to self-destruct."
The Wolves will face the Sonora Broncos next Friday night at Colorado City with kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m.

Hawks Devour Wolves 48-0

Things did not get off on a good start last Friday night at Wolves Field in their home opener against the Wall Hawks when the officiating crew did not show up for the game.
Then, after finding a crew to referee the game, things got progressively worse for the Wolves young football squad.
After a slow start, the Hawks made up for lost time as they rolled to a 41-0 halftime lead. The Wolves held the Hawks to a single touchdown in the second half with reserves doing most of the work.
The one bright spot for the Wolves was the emergence of freshman quarterback-running back Jamarcus Denson who came in to replace junior starting quarterback Kolby Free who went out due to an injury.
Denson, the first freshman to make the varsity squad for the Wolves in several years, The 14-year old was baptized under fire, but composed himself well after fumbling his first possession.
The Wolves will try to turn the ship around next Thursday night when they play the Grape Creek Eagles to open the second annual Sammy Baugh Classic that is being held in Sweetwater. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.

Bulldogs Bite Wolves At Scrimmage

The young Colorado Wolves took on the Clyde Bulldogs last Thursday night in a final scrimmage before the season kicks off on Friday, Sept. 1 at home against the mighty Wall Hawks.
The Wolves found it was pretty tough to run on the Bulldogs defense, but did move the ball through the air even though they never managed t o put anything into the endzone.
In a live quarter Clyde put up two touchdowns while holding the Wolves to nothing. The Wolves did get into the red zone once, but were unable to get a score.
Going into the first game the Wolves are without senior defensive end Zach Pfueffer for about 4 to 5 weeks with a broken wrist while sophomore quarterback Clint White is out indefinitely with a broken ankle.
Coach Frank Johnson will carry 10 sophomores and a freshmen on the opening game roster when they take the field this Friday night.

Wolves Scrimmage Albany

The young Colorado Wolves took to the road last Saturday morning for a scrimmage with Class A powerhouse Albany, and came away looking for a few answers as well as a possible season ending injury to quarterback Clint White, a promising sophomore player.
"It looks like we may have lost Clint for the season," said head coach Frank Johnson. "We will know for sure in a day or so. Other than that we came out of the scrimmage fairly healthy. I think we need some work on our endurance because we began to tire out late in the scrimmage. There were a few good things, but we still need a lot of work with our offensive line. I feel like we are going to be all right there, but we just need a lot of reps becasue none of these kids have had much playing time on the varsity. It's a huge difference and takes some getting used to as you go from the freshman or JV team to the varsity."
One bright spot in their running game is that Jose Gonzales has returned to workouts as well as freshman Jamarcus Denson taking a lot of handoffs during practice on Monday.
"He may be ready for the varsity by midseaon," said Johnson. "He has good size, but not the speed we had in Jacobie (Russell). "We just have to bring him along real slow."
The Wolves will scrimmage the Clyde Bulldogs this Friday night in a final tuneup before the regular season begins on September 1 when the Wolves entertain the Wall Hawks. It will be "Meet the Wolves" night at Wolves Stadium, a chance to meet all the varsity and JV football players, the girls volleyball team, mangagers, band members cheerleaders, etc.

Wolves Hold Intra-Squad Scrimmage

Last Saturday the Colorado Wolves held an intra-squad scrimmage with the varsity going up against the JV team. Later the JV took on the younger freshmen team. Head coach Frank Johnson said though he was disappointed in some areas, he did come away with a few positives.

"We are very green which is expected when you don't return any starters from the previous year," said Johnson. " We have a lot of work to do, but it's nothing that can't be fixed with some work. We did have a few positive things. We probably will not have our varsity folks picked though until the week we open against Wall becasue the starting jobs are still up for grabs."

The Wolves travel to Albany this Saturday morning to do battle with the Lions. The freshman team start things off at 10 a.m. followed by the JV and the varsity.

60 Report For Two-A-Day Workouts

Sixty Athletes showed up when two-a-day workouts began this morning (Monday) at Wolves Stadium. Among them were five seniors with another to begin later this week.
Head coach and athletic director Frank Johnson begins his ninth year as a member of the Wolves coaching staff, the fifth as the head coach. He is optimistic about the Wolves chanches.
"We are going to be very young and inexperienced, but I believe we are going to challenge some folks this season. We are going into the season with every position up for grabs. The one that wants it the most will be the starter."
Friday the Wolves will be able to go into full pads, but until then, it's shorts and t-shirt along with the wearing of the helmet during practice.

Rebuilding year for C-City Wolves

Two-A-Day Workouts will begin on Monday, August 7, at 7 a.m. for the Colorado Wolves, and the Wolves will be facing a rebuilding year after the loss of 22 seniors.
Only a handful of players come into the season with any experience, and most of those split time between the varsity and JV last season.
Head coach and athletic director Frank Johnson is still somewhat optimistic about the upcoming season.
"You play the cards you are dealt," said Johnson. "We are still going to go out each week and play no matter what people have predicted us to do. I feel like we are going to surprise some folks along the way."
Coach Johnson has added two new coaches to his coaching staff after coach Dustin Anders and coach Sumners departed for greener grass. Coach White comes directly out of Texas Tech where he played intramural football after being a standout fullback at Stanton where they were a state semifinalist his senior year.
