Showdown

OK, it's rivalry week, and you know what that means. It's time for some good old fashioned smack talk. I'm gonna keep it short and not so sweet.

Back in the mid to late 90s, the Cooper football team opened the crosstown game by running through a banner that read, "For Abilene High, losing to Cooper is not an option... it's a TRADITION!" We all know that TRADITION NEVER GRADUATES.

30-12-1... It's Tradition!

God Bless and GO COOGS!!!

It's do or die time

Well, well, well. It?s been a while since my last post and a lot has happened since then. Ups, downs, wins, losses? pretty much everything. Instead of recapping everything that has gone on up until now, I figured I would just look at where the Coogs are now and where they are headed.

Right now, Cooper is 1-1 in district play which puts them in a tie for third with Midland High. Now, guess who Cooper plays this Friday night? As fate would have it, the Coogs will welcome the Dawgs to Shotwell in a game that will more than likely decide the fate of both teams. You can look at this game any way you want but there is one simple truth that remains? the winner sits in the driver?s seat for the playoffs, the loser does not. There are a lot of things that can happen between now and the end of the regular season, but odds are pretty good that the loser of this game will be playing basketball a lot sooner than they want.

Midland will bring a very good team to Shotwell Friday night. The Dawgs are 6-1 on the season with their lone loss coming to state ranked Abilene High in a 52-14 blowout. Before you get too excited though? Abilene High is good? VERY good. Nobody should look at that final score and think they are going to whip up on Midland. At the same time, nobody should look at the Coogs? 61-7 slaughter of Odessa and think that Cooper is going to roll over anybody. The games are still played on the field, and on that field, Cooper will have to deal with two very dangerous QBs, a multitude of slippery WRs and a RB that can kill you in the open field. Midland can expect to see a fired up bunch of Cougars coming off what can only be described as a dominating performance the previous week. In that game against Odessa, everything was clicking for the Coogs. Chris Hall was close to perfect throwing the ball, Demetrius Gore and Jerry Harper were constant threats running the ball, the offensive line spent the night pushing around a much bigger team in red and the defense pretty much had their way with the Odessa offense. All that will need to be repeated if the Coogs want to be in that driver?s seat after Friday night.

Now, the REAL season begins

The Cooper Cougars have made the playoffs for the past 12 years in a row. The Coogs have won at least a share of the past four district titles including the past two outright. Cooper owns the famous district bell, but all of that mean nothing on the night of Oct. 8. That's when the Rebels of Midland Lee travel to Shotwell to kick off the 2004 district 3-5A season.

The Rebels come into the game with a 4-1 record including winning their last four games in a row over some of the better opponents the state has to offer. The Cougars will come into that game on a two game losing streak. After shooting out to a 3-0 start, the Coogs stumbled a bit against San Angelo Central and Lubbock Coronado. However, both teams will enter this game with 0-0 records. Lee will enter the game with a revamped offense led by junior RB Trent Hines. Cooper will enter the game with arguably the most improved defense in the district. Somethings gotta give.

Aside from seeing arguably the best rivalry in Little Southwest Conference history, fans will be treated to the annual homecoming festivities as well as the "Passing of the Ball" ceremony that will honor Cooper players and coaches from the past four decades. Cooper fans will also get to see our old friend Randy Quisenberry who returns to Shotwell as an opposing coach. The game has all the making of a classic slugfest.
