9-0 / 4-0

History time. The Abilene cross town rivalry has been fairly one sided over the years. Abilene High won the first game back in 1961 by the score of 35-0. Cooper won the second game by a point. Abilene High won the third game by a point. Abilene High won the 4th game by 7 points and the two teams tied the fifth game of the series 0-0. Unless there is a rule change, that tie game in 1965 is not only the only tie game ever between these two teams it is the only tie there ever will be since “tie games now are decided by overtime. Beginning in 1966 and going to the 1980 game, Cooper won 15 games in a row over Abilene High. AHS won two straight in 1981 and 1982. Cooper won again in 1983. Abilene High then went on a “streak winning 4 games in a row in 1984, 1985, 1986, and 1987. Cooper won again in 1988 and 1989. Abilene High won the 1990 game 13-10. Cooper won every year from 1991 to 1998. Abilene High won in 1999 by the score of 20 to 7 and made the playoffs for the first time in 40 years. Cooper won in 2000 and Abilene High won in 2001. Cooper won again in 2002 and 2003. Abilene High won last year and last night. The overall series now stands at 30 wins for Cooper and 14 wins for Abilene High and the one tie. 45 years of playing the Cougars and Abilene High has won 14 times. You better believe that Abilene High enjoyed every minute of the 40 to zip win last night. For only the fourth time in the 45 years Abilene High shut out Cooper. 1961 35-0, 1965 0-0 1984 23-0, and now 2005 40-0. By the way, Cooper has shut out Abilene High 7 times if you include the 0-0 tie in 1965.

Cooper began last nights game by taking the opening kickoff and going three and out. Abilene scored on their first possession with just under 5 minutes left in the first quarter. Cooper then got the ball and kept it for 16 plays but again failed to score. Cooper appeared to consider going for it on forth down but decided to punt the ball and Abilene High got the ball on their own 16 yard line. Abilene High did a “four and out. The problem for Cooper on that was the forth play for Abilene High was a 62 yard touch down run by Garrison Hardin. Hardin normally plays as a defensive lineman for the Eagles. He does go in on offense in certain short yardage situations for the Eagles as a blocking back. SURPRISE! This time he gets the ball and after a bit of deception on the part of the Eagles, Mr. Hardin took off down the sideline for his only touchdown of the season, so far. I don’t always give out game balls in this blog but Garrison gets one for his carry. For all practical purposes, you could have stuck a fork in the Cougars at that point because they were done. Being down 14 points and Cooper lacking the capability of the big play, the Eagles had this game in the bag. Two more scores in the first half, A field goal by “Cory “Hot Rod Rodriquez and a pass to Jason Boone and BAM! It is 24-0 ay the half. The Eagles had the ball 5 times in the first half and scored 4 times, the other time Potts ran the ball out of bounds to mercifully end the half.

Cooper, who won the toss to begin the game, elected to receive the opening kickoff. By doing so, the option rested with the Eagles and they received the ball to start the second half. The Eagles took all of 62 seconds to get on the board again this time on a 55 yard pass play to Lyle Leong. The Eagles failed to convert on the PAT and led 30-0. In less than 5 minutes, Casey Bell was able to run the ball in for a touchdown and the score was 37-0 at the end of three quarters. With the bench emptied on offense and defense the Eagles added another field goal by Rodriquez with 10:52 left in the game for the final score of 40-0.

Since we began talking history, we will rap this session up with one more tidbit of note. Abilene High’s 40-0 win along with Odessa High beating Permian 14-12 and Midland High beating Midland Lee means the “Highs were all on the winning side on the same night in the rivalry games for the first time since 1964!

I guess I should also mention that the win tonight by the Eagles gives then at the least, a co district championship. Without trying to sound greedy, the Eagles are looking for much more than that.

On to Lee.

Cross town showdown time

I just can’t help but wonder is this the last game of this great rivalry as we know it? Are these two schools leaving the district known as The Little SWC in February with UIL realignment? Will one of us be 4A and one of us 5A next season.? I don’t know the answer to those questions but I do know this is Abilene High, Cooper week!

Emotions will be running high and we will all try to get through it one more time. My wife quit going to ballgames with me mostly because of this once a year contest. Lots of energy is expended by players, coaches, students, parents and fans alike when the cross town match up rolls around. Some things never change. Folks that don’t have season tickets have stood in line to buy tickets for this game.

These are two good programs. This year, one is unbeaten and one isn’t. One team is ranked in the top 10 and one isn’t. One team is headed for the playoffs and one isn’t. The intensity level will still be just as high as it would be if they were ranked #1 and #2. These kids know each other and have for years. Some not only know each other but are really good friends. For this game the Black and Gold and Red and Blue separate the friendships and then it will go back to the way it was before.

Cooper has had a tough year due to injuries. They will come out Friday night and play their hearts out and do everything they can to beat the Eagles. Cooper, due to their 0-3 record in district will be home for the playoffs for the second year in a row. It would salvage the season greatly to knock the Eagles from the ranks of the unbeaten and also to add another notch to their total of victories they have enjoyed over the north side school since the series began.

The Eagles on the other hand are defending the bell they won last season and a win over Cooper and then Midland Lee next week would give Abilene High their second straight undefeated regular season and second straight district championship. By the way, it would also mean their second straight win over Cooper which has not happened in many years.

Whatever ammo is needed to get up for this game, I assure you both schools will have found it by game time on Friday night.

8 and 0, 3 and 0 looking for the City Championship

Friday night was just another night at the office for the business like Abilene High Eagles as they picked up another win and a couple of records along the way. It was also Senior night for the Abilene High Eagle Band. Coach Warren will be the first to tell you how appreciative he and his staff and the football team are of the Eagle band.

The Permian Panthers brought a team to town with fading playoff hopes yet a team focused on doing what no one has done this season, upsetting the Eagles. Permian has made some great strides to return to the days of old when they were the power to be reckoned with in this great football district.

The game began with Permian bringing a quick defense and a hard rush on Taylor Potts, the Eagle QB. Taylor was slow in getting started as a result of the fierce pressure brought by the Panthers. Potts completed just one of his first 5 passes. Some blocking schemes were tweaked a bit and Taylor settled into his groove. Did he ever! He finished up hitting 15 of his next 18 passes and had a total of 272 yards and four touchdowns. He broke a school record held by Marcus Johnson. The Eagles once again did what they have done often over the course of the last two seasons, get their opponent down a couple of scores and then let their stout defense dictate what the other team has to do and not what the opponent wants to do.

The Eagles led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter on a td pass from Potts to Lyle Leong and a qb sneak by Potts. Actually at 6’5’’ and 215 pounds it is hard for Taylor to sneak anywhere! Permian came back to put points on the board and cut the Eagle lead in half. Robert Murray had a beautiful run around the right end and down the sideline for a 30 yard touchdown that capped an 80 yard 8 play drive, all on the ground. That was early in the second quarter. The Panthers gained an additional 110 yards on the ground the rest of the game. The Permian team ran much of the night with the same style Permian offense that we have watched for many years. It is not real fancy but with good execution sometimes it is difficult to know who exactly has the ball. Abilene High responded by scoring 10 additional points before halftime. Cory Rodriguez booted a 29 yard field goal and Lyle Leong caught another touchdown pass from Potts. This one covered 17 yards. 24-7 at the half. One other play that stands out in the first half took place in the first quarter. Permian had apparently forced a punt by Abilene High for the second series. AHS lined up in punt formation on fourth down . The center snapped the ball to the up man. Jeff Williams and he broke through over the right tackle position and then headed North and he looked like a heat seeking missile as he ran into the two Permian players that had gone back to receive the punt. Running full throttle he tried to run over the two Permian players. They stopped him but both got up pretty slow. I watched the replay provided by KTXS on the internet about 5 or 6 times and laughed every time.

The Eagles expanded their lead to 35 -7 in the third quarter, a 40 yard pass to Leong and a 76 yarder to Potts. The Eagles played many players and Permian did add 14 more points to finish out their scoring at 21 points for the evening. Late in the game the Eagles finished their scoring at 45 points on an electrifying run by Jason Brooks that went for 53 yards. Abilene High had a big night offensively against a defense that statistically ranked very good in this district. I believe that the Eagles finished the night with over 460 yards of offense.

The “D was as good as ever. Stephen Powell got another interception which I think might have been his 7th of the season. I keep wondering why do teams throw at him. Permian did manage to gain 191 yards on the ground and 48 passing. One thing that will not make the coaches happy is the Eagles were flagged 6 times for 70 yards.

Speaking of the coaches, head coach Steve Warren won his 79th game as the Eagle head coach. That surpasses the 78 games won by the legendary Chuck Moser at Abilene High. Great job coach Warren and congratulations.

GOOD FOOTBALL TO YOU!

October 18, 2005

Permian is coming to town.

Odessa Permian had their MOJO back for awhile this season. They went 4-1 before district started. Once the range wars began, things have gone down hill. Week one of 3-5 A play saw the Midland Bulldogs jump all over the Panthers. Week 2 saw the Midland Lee Rebels defeat Permian 16-6.

The question is…..are the Eagles playing the 4-1 pre district Panthers or the 0-2 district Panthers? Of course they are one and the same and that makes them a bit dangerous. Abilene High being 7-0 overall and 2-0 in district and 19-1 over the last couple of seasons and ranked #7 in the state have a HUGE bull’s eye on their back. What a way to salvage anybody’s season by beating a team of Abilene High’s stature!

If you think for a moment that Permian will come into Shotwell feeling like they can’t win this game, you had better think again. They will bring the best they have to offer. Abilene High will have to defeat Permian once they get on the field.

Permian has 2 district losses but they are not a pushover team. They play real good run defense and though it is weaker, the pass defense is not bad. On offense they will run the ball more than they pass, a lot more! They are trying to go back to “old school Permian football. Remember student body right and student body left? That is what they want to do. That is what they will try to do against the Eagles Friday. We all know that a running game when it works will eat up yardage and just as importantly eat up clock time. If you can keep the ball away from Abilene High you then force Abilene High to make the big play.

Abilene High has plenty of power tools to get the job done as far as making the big plays forced or not. The reason the Eagles want to have an effective running game is time management as well as complementing the passing game. Over the last couple of seasons Abilene High has been a very balanced team and capable of depending on the running game or the passing game more so if the opponent’s defense dictates that.

The Eagles defensive unit has played well all year long. They are stout against the run and a team will need to think twice before it throws against Abilene High. The take away ration by the Eagles is spectacular. The line is very tough and as coach Warren likes to say they all understand “the tempo of the game. The linebackers do an extremely good job and the defensive backs are super. Trying to single one player our of the defensive “brotherhood is nigh on impossible.

Offensively, Abilene High has much talent and most folks immediately think of QB Taylor Potts. Why not? Taylor is the team leader on offense and he has countless numbers of go to receivers though most fans and other teams think that Lyle Leong is the one to stop. Good thinking on their part. The unfortunate thing for the defensive coordinators of other teams is when you clamp down on Lyle you may well leave the gate open for the many other receivers that are at Pott’s disposal. You can't let Kortney McDow or Luke Kittley, or Jason Boone, or Chris Hale go free. When one puts so much into stopping the passing game, they have to factor in the running game. Casey Bell and Xavier Beaver, the BB boys, are a handful and there are still others to stop. Remember, Taylor will run the ball too.

I have just described what sounds somewhat impossible, stopping the Eagles. To shut down the Eagles completely will require much help from the Eagles themselves, Turnovers and penalties hurt all teams. So far, Abilene High has held those to a minimal amount. That speaks well of the players and coaches.

Come out Friday night and watch the Eagles play Permian as the Eagles press toward repeating as District 3-5A Champions. See you there!

District 3-5A through Week 2

We are two weeks into the range wars and this is what we know. Abilene High and Midland Lee are both 2-0. Midland High and Odessa High are both 1-1. Abilene Cooper and Odessa Permian are both 0-2.

It is a widely held thought that three wins will get you into the playoffs. It is only a thought and not a guarantee. Three weeks of District 3-5A are left. Three teams will go to the playoffs. NOTHING is settled YET! Abilene High and Lee look good at 2-0 with three games left. Cooper and Permian are looking up a huge hill at 0-2. Midland High and Odessa High at 1-1 are well positioned.

Abilene High 2-0 has beaten Odessa High (1-1) 28-7 and Midland High (1-1) by 31-20. The Eagles have Odessa Permian (0-2) at Shotwell , Abilene Cooper (0-2) at Shotwell where we are eastsider’s this season and Midland Lee (2-0) at Grande Communications Stadium in Midland on November 4th.

Midland Lee 2-0 has beaten Abilene Cooper (0-2) 15-0 and Odessa Permian (0-2) 16-6. The Rebels have Odessa High (1-1) at Ratliff Stadium, Midland High (1-1) at Grande and Abilene High (2-0) at Grande on November 4th.

Midland High 1-1 has beaten Odessa Permian (0-2) 38-0, and lost to Abilene High (2-0) 31-20. The Bulldogs have Abilene Cooper (0-2) at Grande, Midland Lee (2-0) at Grande (Midland will be eastside’s) and Odessa High (1-1) at Odessa’s Ratliff stadium on November 4th.

Odessa High 1-1 has lost to Abilene High (2-0) 28-7 and beaten Abilene Cooper (0-2) 42-14. The Bronchos have Midland Lee (2-0) at Ratliff, Odessa Permian (0-2) at Ratliff (Odessa High is the visiting team) and Midland High at Ratliff on November 4th.

Abilene Cooper 0-2 has lost to Midland Lee (2-0) 15-0 and Odessa High (1-1) 42-14. The Cougars have Midland High (1-1) at Grande Communications Stadium, Abilene High (2-0) at Shotwell, Odessa Permian (0-2) at Shotwell On November 4th.

Odessa Permian (0-2) has lost to Midland High (1-1) 38-0 and Midland Lee (2-0) 16-6. The Panthers have Abilene High (2-0) at Shotwell, Odessa High (1-1) at Ratliff and Abilene Cooper (0-2) at Shotwell November 4th.

Those of you that know me know that I have been around for a while. I will tell you 54 years. I grew up with both of my parents being avid football fans and they passed it on to me. Growing up in Stamford during the mid to late 1950’s also paved the way to my love for high school football. How could you grow up in a small town with an outstanding football team and not grow up loving football? The same time the Eagles were winning 3 state championships in a row, the Stamford Bulldogs won state 4 out of 5 years.

I moved to Abilene in 1970 and have been an Eagle fan since then. I have seen good teams and bad teams, really good teams and really bad teams. I have remained an Eagle fan through it all. My wife and I raised three children that all graduated at Abilene High. I have had season tickets to Eagle football games since 1993.

Now that you know a portion of my history I will tell you that I remember when only one team went to the playoffs and then two teams and now three teams and I guess soon there will be 4 teams going. I am not a fan of four. I have kind of gotten use to three teams in the playoffs although I really don’t care for that. Two teams are ok I suppose. When only one team went, it gave a tad bit more meaning to winning the district championship.

Some teams play to make the playoffs while some teams play to win the district championship. Some teams are bold enough to begin their season playing for a state championship. Goals are good. I believe they are best achieved one game at a time. Wins are better than losses but you can learn and profit from losses.

W W W W W W W and ZERO other things

Well, another game behind us and another W. For those of you counting that is W W W W W W W and ZERO other things. You know what I am talking about baby!

WOW! That first quarter was something wasn’t it? The Grande Communications stadium was “arockin for that 12 minutes. I watched the Eagles take the opening kick off and take a little drive down the field for a TD and then I went to thee concession stand. I wasn’t gone but a couple of minutes and when I get back in the stands it is a 7-7 game. What happened? Mr , Batch ripped us on a shovel pass for 83 yards. This is against THE Eagle “D“. Not the second string mind you, THE EAGLE “D“. I tell a Midland fan setting behind me that was that. “It ain’t gonna happen again.

The Eagles score again, The Eagles score again. The Eagles score again, this time THE EAGLE “D. It is now 28-7 and I am saying “life is good. Then BAM! Mr. Barron Batch rips off a 71 yard run. The Midland fan says nothing but I see the look he gives me. Halftime and it is 28-14 Eagles. Why am I still nervous?

The second half has Midland High outscoring the Eagles 6 to 3 but it isn’t enough and the Eagles “fly back to Abilene with a 31-20 win over a good Midland High team. Two district games and two wins for the Eagles. LIFE IS GOOD!

Looking a little closer at the stats reveals a couple of things to me. Batch got 129 on the ground and 129 on passes. That is a little misleading but a shovel pass is a pass though many would consider it a run. Now. Rushing the ball 18 times for 129 yards looks like a seven yard per carry average. That is good. Real good. However, after further review, take 71 yards and one carry away, He has 58 yard on 17 carries which is nearly 3.5 yards a carry. Still good. Now I know he is mortal. Passing 129 yards on 4 catches looks like 32 yards a catch and it is but since 83 came on one play it is more like 15 a catch. Nothing wrong with that either. What I am saying is Abilene High did play exceptional defense against an exceptional athlete. By the end of the game, the aforementioned exceptional athlete was not quite as eager to participate as earlier in the game.

Some of you that read this blog probably visit another internet site called thelittleswc.com. If so, you know the smack talk that was delivered my the Midland High fans this past week. It was all in fun on their part but it did get a little over the edge a couple of times. As a good friend of mine has pointed out to me today, the Eagles made “another statement last night. Yes indeed!

The running game for the Eagles did not quite get untracked in this game. The mark of a good team is to get the job done even when things are not working. The Midland D was stout against the run so the Eagles took what they were given. The passing game. Balance is always best but if you get shut down in one area you have to ‘do it another way. The Eagles did it passing. No surprise. Potts and company are know for that.
It is difficult to shut down the Eagles completely. It may be impossible!

Back to the “D for a moment. Two interceptions and a fumble recovery by the Eagles along with four other fumbles by Midland High were keys in the Abilene High victory.

District wide results this week: Abilene High (7-0) (2-0) 31 Midland High (5-2) (1-1) 20. Odessa High (6-1) (2-0) 42 Abilene Cooper (4-3) (0-2) 14. Midland Lee (3-4) (2-0) 16 Odessa Permian (4-3) (0-2) 6.

Next weeks games: Odessa Permian at Abilene High, Abilene Cooper at Midland High, Midland Lee at Odessa High.

Domination (in the second half)

Traditionally, District 3-5A is known through out the state of Texas as being very competitive. This season promises to uphold that tradition as district play began with two teams at 5-0, three teams at 4-1 and one team with a suspicious 1-4 record.

What happens when two good undefeated teams match up with each other? Someone winds up losing. Friday night, those attending the game at Shotwell stadium, saw two such teams meet each other. Abilene High and Odessa High both having 5-0 records faced each other. If defending your undefeated record doesn’t put enough pressure on your team then add to that the fact it is the opening district game for both teams. I did mention that it is the opening of district 3-5A, right?

The first half of the game was a defensive battle supreme that ended with Abilene High holding a slim 7-0 lead. The lone touchdown in the game came with only 2 minutes and 22 seconds in the half. Abilene High’s offense that had averaged nearly 396 yards a game coming into this game had just over 100 yards at the half. Odessa High’s defense played very good and took away one of Abilene High’s weapons, Lyle Leong. Not only did that slow down the passing yardage of Abilene High but the Eagles were held to 25 yards rushing in the first half. Odessa High’s defensive play in the first half, if equaled the rest of district, will propel them into the playoffs this season.

The Abilene High defense did what they have done all season. They played outstanding football. They pitched a shutout during most of the game shutting down a high powered running game. Odessa High finished the game with 60 yards rushing. Coming into this contest, OHS had rushed for 1082 yards in five games. That is an average of over 216 yards a game. They finished with 86 yards passing of which 59 yards came on one play when Daniel Rivas burned the Abilene High D on a beautiful pass from Mason Munguia. OHS had averaged 115 yards passing per game coming into this game. So the Eagle D held the Odessa offense to 146 yards which is 186 yards short of their season average. Domination.

On the other side of the ball the Eagle offense did not play badly in the first half. Odessa High’s defense just dictated what the Eagles did or did not do. The only score in the first half culminated an 81 yard drive by Abilene High. Taylor Potts scored on a 10 yard quarterback keeper. With OHS keying on Leong, Jason Boone stepped up and had 3 catches for 45 of the 81 yards in the drive. Jason finished the night with 5 catches for 62 yards. Lyle Leong facing double teaming and sometimes triple teaming finished the night with 6 catches for 71 yards. The offensive game ball this week goes to Jason Boone.

What does a coach say to his team after a first half defensive battle like that? Coach Warren said, “We challenged them at halftime. My coaching staff made some adjustments and I got it across to the kids, and the kids just roared with it in the second half”.

Roar they did. The Eagles won the toss at the beginning of the game and deferred. The Eagles received the ball to begin the second half. Needless to say it was a very different half of football. The Eagles scored that first drive of the second half. It was one of the best drives of the season. The Eagles used a two tight end set much of the drive. The score came on a 25 yard run by Casey Bell. The D did what it was suppose to do and held Odessa High to a 3 and out series. The Eagles then went on another drive that was capped by a 14 yard run for a touchdown. This time Xavier Beaver scored. Cory Rodriguez kicked the PAT on both scores and the Eagles were up 21-0 at the end of the third quarter. That third quarter was all Eagles. Domination.

To the credit of the Broncho offense, they did not quit. It looked as if AHS had stopped Odessa High again when on a 3 and 5 play from Odessa’s 25 yard line Munguia unloaded a 59 yard bomb to David Rivas. With about 5 and ½ minutes left in the game Munguia scored on a keeper from the 6 yard line that closed the AHS lead to 14 after the PAT by Alonso Jimenez. Odessa High then attempted an onside kick. Steven Powell recovered for the Eagles on their own 36 yard line. The Eagles unleashed Casey bell on a two play drive capped by a Bell 23 yard run.

Recapping the Eagles on offense, Taylor Potts was 17 of 25 with one interception for 189 yards and no touchdowns. The Eagle team rushed for 214 yards on 36 attempts for a 6 yard average. Individually, rushing, Bell had 166 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, Xavier Beaver 10 carries for 46 yards and a touchdown and Jason Brooks two carries for 9 yards. Taylor Potts rushed 4 times for a -7 yards but did run for one touchdown. Receiving for the Eagles, Leong was 6-71, Boone was 5-62, Kortney McDow 2-23, Chris Hale 1-18, Luke Kittley 2-11 and Bell 1-8.

Other results from district 3-5A were Midland Lee defeating Abilene Cooper 15-0 in Midland and Midland High defeating Odessa Permian 38-0 in Odessa. Next week’s games: Abilene High (6-0) (1-0) travels to Midland to take on Midland High (5-1) (1-0). Odessa High (5-1) (0-1) will return to Shotwell to take on Abilene Cooper (4-2) (0-1) and Midland Lee (2-
