Cross town showdown time

I just can’t help but wonder is this the last game of this great rivalry as we know it? Are these two schools leaving the district known as The Little SWC in February with UIL realignment? Will one of us be 4A and one of us 5A next season.? I don’t know the answer to those questions but I do know this is Abilene High, Cooper week!
Emotions will be running high and we will all try to get through it one more time. My wife quit going to ballgames with me mostly because of this once a year contest. Lots of energy is expended by players, coaches, students, parents and fans alike when the cross town match up rolls around. Some things never change. Folks that don’t have season tickets have stood in line to buy tickets for this game.
These are two good programs. This year, one is unbeaten and one isn’t. One team is ranked in the top 10 and one isn’t. One team is headed for the playoffs and one isn’t. The intensity level will still be just as high as it would be if they were ranked #1 and #2. These kids know each other and have for years. Some not only know each other but are really good friends. For this game the Black and Gold and Red and Blue separate the friendships and then it will go back to the way it was before.
Cooper has had a tough year due to injuries. They will come out Friday night and play their hearts out and do everything they can to beat the Eagles. Cooper, due to their 0-3 record in district will be home for the playoffs for the second year in a row. It would salvage the season greatly to knock the Eagles from the ranks of the unbeaten and also to add another notch to their total of victories they have enjoyed over the north side school since the series began.
The Eagles on the other hand are defending the bell they won last season and a win over Cooper and then Midland Lee next week would give Abilene High their second straight undefeated regular season and second straight district championship. By the way, it would also mean their second straight win over Cooper which has not happened in many years.
Whatever ammo is needed to get up for this game, I assure you both schools will have found it by game time on Friday night.

Don, thanks for a great write up. It is a special night and we are all a family again now that this game is over. My hats off to Cooper who never quit but were just outmatched tonight. Our boys came ready to play, I think these guys smell something special and are getting better every week. Look forward to seeing you on Monday at lunch. Daryl Zeller
