Those of you that know me know that I have been around for a while. I will tell you 54 years. I grew up with both of my parents being avid football fans and they passed it on to me. Growing up in Stamford during the mid to late 1950’s also paved the way to my love for high school football. How could you grow up in a small town with an outstanding football team and not grow up loving football? The same time the Eagles were winning 3 state championships in a row, the Stamford Bulldogs won state 4 out of 5 years.

I moved to Abilene in 1970 and have been an Eagle fan since then. I have seen good teams and bad teams, really good teams and really bad teams. I have remained an Eagle fan through it all. My wife and I raised three children that all graduated at Abilene High. I have had season tickets to Eagle football games since 1993.

Now that you know a portion of my history I will tell you that I remember when only one team went to the playoffs and then two teams and now three teams and I guess soon there will be 4 teams going. I am not a fan of four. I have kind of gotten use to three teams in the playoffs although I really don’t care for that. Two teams are ok I suppose. When only one team went, it gave a tad bit more meaning to winning the district championship.

Some teams play to make the playoffs while some teams play to win the district championship. Some teams are bold enough to begin their season playing for a state championship. Goals are good. I believe they are best achieved one game at a time. Wins are better than losses but you can learn and profit from losses.

“When life’s final season is over and all the ‘wins’ and ‘losses’ have been recorded, it will be the effort we gave that truly defines us. “ Don Hardin, an Abilene Eagle fan
