Jim Ned's Engines Slow to Heat Up in a 20-15 Loss to Jarrell

The Jim Ned football team is back in action, to quote the vernacular, but new faces and a lack of maturity brought the youthful team just short of a victory last night against the Jarrell Cougars. In Brownwood, the game started off with a putter for both sides, as both teams realized early that their respective passing games were not on target. Jarrell did light up the board first, however, with a half-field run by Charles Spradley, toward the end of the first quarter. Jim Ned almost answered back with a nice 50+ yard run by (tell me if I am wrong, here) Stephen Hernandez. The play was botched by a set of penalties, including an infraction by the Indian bench. After that, the Cougars' offense was all but ignited as QB Kyle Lloyd sent up a pass for Andrew Sumner, who rolled through the endzone and out of bounds, bouncing up with both hands raised.

At the half, the Jim Ned Indians walked into the fieldhouse knowing that the score was not the only thing haunting them. There was a flurry of unnecessary penalties that had bewildered them, as well. They had to change something -- and they had to change it fast.

The second half started on a similar note, with the Indians once again dropping penalty after penalty. It took one more touchdown by Jarrell before Cam Decker realized he had to air out the offense. He connected with Jacob Bunton on two nice passes, and set up a scoring opportunity, but the offense just couldn't get it done.

In the fourth quarter, Decker and the Jim Ned offense looked like a different team, altogether, mixing in plays that the rest of the game hadn't seen. Eventually, powerhouse Lane Davis broke through the blue wall of Jarrell for six points. On the ensuing field goal, the ball was fumbled, and Decker was able to grab the ball and dive in for two, bringing the game to a 12 point deficit.

Shortly after that, the Indians' Philip Perez escorted the pigskin into the endzone, and the field goal was good.

But the Indians soon found themselves on a fourth and three situation with five seconds left. Decker scrambled to find an open receiver, then found himself losing space, and he attempted to jump past the down marker himself. Coming up fruitless, the Cougars were able to regain the ball with 3 seconds left, and the game ended on the knee of Kyle Lloyd.

What was nice to see was that Jim Ned did gel, albeit late in the game. The offensive change of pace was more than "a good thing" -- it was awesome. There was forward movement with every play, it seemed like, and the penalties were greatly reduced, and I wonder if it was because of the alterations.

The Indians definately have an interceptor. Taylor Cain came up with two great catches -- even though they weren't aimed at him. One probably saved the Indians from a greater loss.

Kudos to Brandon Mansfield (#60) who showed good sportsmanship by helping a couple of cougars up after what looked like some heated discussion in the pile. -- oh and what happened to #88?
