Bulldogs Ready To Get Started

The Loraine Bulldogs are anxious to get the 2006 football season started, and that will happen this Friday night, September 1st, when they host the Dawson Dragons. Two years ago the Bulldogs scored 106 points on the Dragons, but gave up 76. That's not going to be the case this year according to second year head coach Jeffrey Stockton.
"Our defense looks the best it has in several years," said Stockton. "We won't be giving up near as many points as we have the past couple of years, I guarantee you that."
Expected to start on offense this Friday will be senior ends Jimmy Grissom, a 205 pounder who has added 35 pounds this summer, and Miguel Acevedo who has been the starting center the past two years. Sophomore Robert Cantu is expected to get the nod at the center position.
Sophomore Jacob Sanchez is expected to get the call at quarterback. He got one start last year in the last game of the year. Senior Zack Gibson and Derek Martinez, a junior, are expected to be the starters in the backfield. Senior transfers Bevian Hermosillo, and junior Stefan Limones will add a lot of depth to the team and will see considerable action. Limones was the starting safety at Trent last season and was named second team all-district there. Hermosillo is a transfer from Marfa where he played 11-man football.

Bulldogs Scrimmage Aspermont, Patton Springs

The Loraine Bulldogs faced off against the Aspermont Hornets and the Patton Springs Rangers in a three-way scrimmage held Saturday morning in Aspermont.
According to Loraine head coach Jeffreyi Stockton there was some good as well as bad coming out of the scrimmage.
"We saw some good things, and we had some things we saw we need some work on," said Stockton. "We obviously need a lot of work on our execution, both on offense and defense. Most of what we saw can be corrected fairly easy. Aspermont was a good test for us as they have a good program. We did fare better in the second scrimmage which was against Patton Springs. We closed their offense down pretty good, but we didn't do as well on offense as I thought we should have.."
The Bulldogs will not have another scrimmage, but will open the season at home on September 1st against the Dawson Dragons. Two years ago the Bulldogs scored more than a hundred points against Dawson in a shoot-out.

Bulldogs Ready To Battle For Playoff Spot

Going into the second full year as the head coach and athletic director for the Loraine Bulldogs, coach Jeffrey Stockton feels the time is now to move forward toward a playoff spot, something that has been missing for some time around Bulldog Country.

"This group of kids are real hungry," said Stockton. "They worked out on their own all summer long and for the most part came back in good physical shape. One of our kids came back with an additional 35 pounds of muscle on him. We have six seniors which a first also in several years. That gives us some leadership that has been missing for a few years also."

Twenty athletes reported on the first day of workouts on Monday, August 7th, but one has stepped down to become the manager.

Some of the kids that are standing out are tight end Jimmy Grissom, running back Derek Martinez, running back Zack Gibson, and end Miguel Acevedo. Newcomer Stefan Limones who transferred from Trent should be a welcome addition on defense while Marfa transfer Bevian Hermosillo jr. enters his senior year playing six-man football for the first time after a successful 11-man high school career. It is rumored he can kick field goals from 35 yards out which will be welcomed after losing some tight games in the past due to missed PAT's.

The Bulldogs will get in their only scheduled scrimmage in this Saturday when they travel to Aspermont to try out the Hornets with a 10 a.m. start time.
