Getting his Chantz: McMurry's Purvis back in familiar position

When McMurry opens its season Saturday night against Trinity, running back Chantz Purvis will be bck in a familiar spot.

Purvis, a sophomore from Garland Naaman Forest, is expectedto get the start ar running back after playing slot receiver last year.

"I played running back in high school," Purvis said. "I came in and slot was kind of new, running a lot of routes. But I love running back. I love what running back is all about. I love the blocking, I love getting the ball.

"It's not anything new. It's all coming back."

McMurry coach Hal Mumme said Purvis has the tools to be successful.

"You can tell he's got a good background from high school with fundamentals and stuff like that," Mumme said. He played quite a bit on the junior varsity last year. He's had a good outing in all of our practices. We're looking for big things."

At 5-foot-6 and 165 pounds, Purvis may not be the most imposing figure on the field. But Mumme said even that can work in the Nation's favor.

"In our offense, it doesn't hurt to have a running back that size," Mumme said. "They can hide out behind the linemen. Our linemen are always in a two-point stance. As long as he can get his assignments done, we don't really care how tall he is."
