Closer to starting the season

Are we there yet? No, but we are close enough I can smell the hamburgers cooking at Six-Man fields across the state. I found new excitement with the Abilene Reporter News' Kickoff 2007.

I have posted a few more pictures of Trent's new stadium @ http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/sixmancentral/

Just click on the word photo on the left hand side of the page.

Week Zero promises some good games. You will not be able to see them all but you need to go somewhere. If you have a favorite team, by all means, go and support them. I realize not everyone will drive a long distance to see a game so depending on where you live, here are some good games to consider.

History will be made when Trent plays their first game in the new stadium on the new turf that I have made such a fuss over. They play Westbrook on Friday August 31st at 7:30 PM.

Robert Lee will host Rankin. More than likely, this will be a preview of a playoff game later in the season between two very good Division 1 teams.

Up Jayton way you might want to catch the Highland and Newcastle game. Those are most likely two playoff bound teams as well.

Another interesting game should be May hosting Woodson. Again, this looks like two playoff teams hooking up the first rattle out of the box.

On paper, the Rule and Idalia, CO. game looks like a good match up. They play on Saturday September 1st at 6:00 PM on the campus of McMurry University in Abilene. Should be a short game.

There are five games on Saturday in Hico starting at 11:00 AM. Take your pick. The 8:00 PM game will be the less competitive of the day but what the heck if you are already there.

Saturday night in Richland Springs, watch the Number One team in the state hosting a good team from Happy. If you never have see Tyler Ethridge in action, you owe it to yourself to make the trip there. He is one amazing young man. The Six-Man world knows him as TE. Try it. Ask someone that watches Six-Man ball year in year out. Believe me, they will know who TE is.

Is it just me or is there some huge games in Week Zero?

How about Santa Anna hosting Coolidge?

A little love goes out to Abilene Christian High School as they take on Dell City in Richland Springs on Saturday. ACHS is a Private that plays in TAPPS. They played the toughest non-district schedule in the state last season. This year is a bit easier but not much.

Well, you can't make 'em all. Do what you can.

GOOD FOOTBALL TO YOU

Try Try Try Again

Saturday, August 25th, I decided to make the short drive from Abilene to Trent to have a look see at the new Trent Gorillas athletic complex. Very impressive, very impressive indeed.

What I found was a new football stadium, track, and softball field. The playing surfaces are artifical turf. The football field turf is down and ready to go. That is a good thing as the Gorillas will be hosting the Water Valley Wildcats Friday August 31st at 7:30 PM. There is still lots of work to do with the stadium. The bleachers and press box on the Home side are not finished. The Visitors side looks to be ready to go. The lights are connected and being tested on the Home side. The lights on the Visitors side will get hooked up on Monday.

Workers were there on Saturday welding on the fence that surrounds the football field. Closer inspection revealed thos workers were none other than Head Coach Kyle Jeffery, Superintendant Greg Priddy. and Vocational Ag teacher Lee (I missed the last name).

I am going to try to add some pictures so you can get a feel for what the first artifical turf Six-Man stadium on the planet looks like. Trent paid lots of money for this complex but the school board thinks they have made a good investment and I agree.

Who builds next? There are others interested.

Week Zero, Anything But A Zero

There are basically two types of fans in Six-Man.

The first kind is the be true to your school fans. For instance, let’s say the folks out in the far west part of the state in Sierra Blanca are fans of the Vasqueros. By the way, that has to be the best mascot name in the state.

The second kind is reserved for folks that just love the game of Six-Man. They don’t really care who it is playing. Just turn the lights on, wind the clock, huddle up, and git’ er done.

Starting Thursday August 30th, both kinds of fans should be able to satisfy their thirst for pigskin spectating. Week Zero officially starts the new season of high school football. The “be trues” will follow their teams wherever they go, home or away. Got to love it.

The “just love the gamers” have to pick and choose where they will be to kick off the new season. There are kick off classics that will have multiple games like at Richland Springs and Jayton. You probably couldn’t go wrong attending either one of those.

You can look up and down the schedule on Granger’s board and find several good match ups to open the season. I suspect as far as just single game venues in Week Zero one of the very best games should be the tussle between the # 6 ranked Rankin Red Devils and the # 11 ranked Robert Lee Steers.

If you are into the multi game venues then you might want to consider the goings on over at Richland Springs on Saturday September 1st. There you will find the # 1 and # 5 teams in the state taking on each other in Richland Springs and Happy.

If you are still looking for a little more bang for your bucks then there is one more place to consider. That would be HICO. Since 2004, the folks in Hico have been putting on the Six-Man Super Saturday. This year is no exception. For $5.00 a game or $10.00 for an all day pass you can enjoy some fine Six-Man football.

The fun and games begin when the gates open at 10:00 AM. The first of FIVE games begins at 11:00 AM when Lometa takes on Grand Falls. 1:30 PM is the scheduled time for the second game that features Garden City against Calvert. Strawn and Valley go at each other at 4:00 PM. Come 6:30 PM, Throckmorton and Trinidad will knock heads. Finally, at 8:00 PM Iredell and Jonesboro will do battle.

There is more to it than just football at HICO. Walt Garrison and Burton Lawless, a couple of “real” Cowboys, are scheduled to appear as is World Champion All-around Cowboy Cody Ohl. There will also be some of the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders on hand.
There will be plenty of food, fun, and fellowship Six-Man style. Come and go or come and stay, a great time will be had by all. Check it out at www.hico-tx.com
