MERCY

MERCY!!!!!!!!! Six-Man Football has a mercy rule that stops a game when one team is up by 45 points at the half or later. A really good team can beat up on a really bad team unmercifully even by the half. I once witnessed a Six-Man game where one team won 98-0 at the half. OUCH!!!!!!!!

Six-Man is a wild and crazy game that sometimes sees the so called "mercy rule" applied even when there are two very good teams playing each other. That happened last year in the Division 1 state championship game. It happened this weekend as well.

The fine folks in Hico, TX hosted their 5th Annual Six-Man Super Saturday. They always get together some great match ups. They had the #11 and #12 teams in the state playing each other. They had the #3 and #6 teams going at each other and the #7 and #8 ranked teams playing each other along with a couple of other games matching quality opponents.
Here is the point to this story. The games between the #3 and #6 teams and the #7 and #8 teams were both ended early by the mercy rule. Go figure. I don't think for a minute that any of the teams were bad but that is the nature of the beast sometimes in Six-Man. You learn to live with it.

The last blog I published here had me wondering about a few things and I have some better ideas now about those particular questions I had. I wondered why Ira and Throckmorton were not Top Ten teams. They played each other in Hico and Throckmorton won 42 to 24. They (Throckmorton) made some mistakes but not as many as Ira. Both teams may well wind up in the Top 10 later on but they both have some things to work on.

I also questioned how strong Follett and Gordon really are. Follett ranked #6 lost to Strawn ranked # 3 by the score of 46-0. Follett IS NOT a bad team. The fact is they are a good team BUT Strawn was DOMINATING. Period. Gordon, while not a top 10 team beat Valley who came in as the #2 team in the state pretty convincingly, 60-38. The Gordon Longhorns appear to be a team to be reckoned with. Did I mention they are in the same district with Strawn? Yikes!

I was also wondering if the # 1 team in Division 2 could stay with the #19 team in Division 1. Woodson indeed did hang with May even though they lost to May by the score of 50-42. Last season when a Division 2 team played a Division 1 team it was pretty ugly.

The last thing I was wondering about was Richland Springs and Rule. They played each other in the state game each of the last two seasons in Division 1. Richland Springs lost several all world players to graduation as did Rule. Rule also dropped to Division 2 and had a coaching change as well. Richland Springs played the # 17 team in Division 2 and won 82-36. I think the Coyotes are doing just fine with the guys they have left. Word is that Walnut Springs is going to fare well themselves. Rule got their first taste of Division 2 since they are now competing at that level. The Bobcats won 51-8. The tradition continues.

Week ZERO is in the books. What will I have to wonder about in Week ONE? Stay tuned.

Week Zero Games of Note

Division One
#3 Strawn against #6 Follett
#2 Valley against #17 Gordon
#7 Abbott against #8 Garden City
#11 Ira against #12 Throckmorton

Division 2 #1 Woodson against Division 1 #19 May
Division 2 #5 Borden County against Division 1 #18 New Home
Division 2 #17 Walnut Springs against Division 1 #4 Richland Springs

Division 2 #7 Rule against Division 2 #37 Chillicothe

Wondering...........Why Ira and Throckmorton neither one or ranked in the top 10.
How strong are Gordon and Follett really. Can the #1 Division 2 team hang with the #19 Division 1 team? How will Rule fare in Division 2? What does the landscape look like in Richland Springs without TE?

We will know the answers to these questions and more in a couple of days.

Stay tuned!

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

There are two Divisions of schools in Six-Man football governed by the U.I.L. here in Texas. School enrollments numbers determine which division a school is placed in. Division 1 has larger enrollments while Division 2 has smaller enrollments. There are FOUR REGIONS in each Division. The district winner and runner up will advance to the playoffs from their respective districts. The playoffs will eventually determine a state champion in both Division 1 and Division 2.

There are different rankings that one can follow if they choose. I hope you care enough to keep your own rankings. Here we will follow the State Farm/Dave Campbell Texas Football rankings even though you as the reader or I as the blogger may not agree with them. Here we go!

Thanks.

Richland Springs Kickoff Classic

Made a phone call to Title Town to get some information about the Richland Springs Kickoff Classic. Six-Man fans around the state will catch the reference about Title Town as the Richland Springs Coyotes are not only the defending State Champions they are Champions 3 out of the last 4 years in Six-Man.

Friday night night August 29th will be a battle of the Springs as Walnut Springs will play the host team Richland Springs at 7:30 PM.

Saturday August 30th will bring four additional games.
11:00 AM Fredericksburg Heritage vs. Milford
1:30 PM Azle Christian vs. Apple Springs
4:30 PM Kopperl vs. Calvert
7:30 PM Sidney vs. Buckholts

Calvert happens to be ranked the number One team in the state in the preseason poll. I am sure the folks in Richland Springs will have all eyes on the Trojans even in Week Zero.

Richland Springs puts on a great Classic. Just say GO.

Jayton Gridiron Classic

Well, we have discussed the Week Zero events at Hico and Trent. How about a little love for the Jayton Gridiron Classic? My info once again is taken from sixmanfootball.com. A poster with the sign in name of Frankly42 says all games are to be played on August 30th as follows:

Benjamin vs. New Castle at 10:30 AM
TLC Academy vs. Wilson at 1:30 PM
Paducah vs. El Paso Immanuel at 4:30 PM
Jayton vs. Lueders-Avoca at 7:30 PM

BTW, a lesson I learned early on attending events where there are multiple games scheduled for the day, the schedule does not always play out as scheduled. All that is to say this, if there is a particular game you are interested in seeing go early. It is better to get in on the last of another game than to miss a portion of the game you really wanted to see.

Truly the best thing to do is go early and stay late. See it all. Take the whole family. If you don't already know it, Six-man football is all about family. ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!

Week Zero Update

My last blog was a friendly reminder that the new season is near. How sweet is that? I mentioned the big day in Hico and promised I would try to get information on other kick off classics from around the area.

A great place to get info about six-man is sixmanfootball.com. How great a place is it? It is widely known as the Bible of Six-man football in Texas. A poster on the board there that uses a sign in name of GorillaMilla has posted info about the happenings at Trent for Week Zero. It is being referred to as Trent's first "Rumble in the Jungle". The schedule is as follows:

Friday August 29th
Westbrook vs.Trent @ 7:30 PM.

Saturday August 31st
New Home vs. Borden County at 10:00 AM
Aspermont vs. Bryson at 1:00 PM
Loraine vs. Abilene Christian at 4:00 PM
Eden vs. Crowell at 7:00 PM

If you have not been out to Trent to see their new complex, you are in for a special treat. As far as I know, they still have the only six-man artificial turf football field on the planet. Check out the track and the softball field as well. It is all first class. Way to go Gorillas!!
