Why is the EAST such a BEAST????????

There are four regions in Division One. The common thought being Region 1 and Region 2 make up the West and Region 3 and Region 4 make up the East.

Let's go to the top 10 teams in Division 1 for a moment shall we?

# 1. Calvert Region 4 East
# 2. Strawn Region 3 East
# 3. Richland Springs Region 3 East
# 4. Abbott Region 4 East
# 5. Fort Davis Region 2 West
# 6. Gordon Region 3 East
# 7. Throckmorton Region 2 West
# 8. Northside Region 2 West
# 9. Milford Region 4 East
#10.Follett Region 1 West

Based on paper and not on the field, the playoffs wind up looking like this:
Follett and Fort Davis would meet in Semi finals for the West.
Calvert and Strawn would meet in the Semi-finals for the East.

The Championship game would be between Calvert and Fort Davis with
Calvert winning by 23 points. This is all on paper remember.

Strange things can happen between now and then. Some teams start district this week and others are 2 or 3 weeks away. Then the playoffs start and who knows what might happen there?

GOOD FOOTBALL TO YOU

LOOKING AHEAD KIND OF SORT OF

DISCLAIMER: Don't go crazy about what you are about to read. These playoff projections are based on the actual playoff brackets for this season BUT the projected teams plugged in are from preseason picks for district winner and runner up slots. All teams named in either district winner or runner up spots are subject to change. The brackets are true as I read them.

IF I read the brackets correctly, notice that is a big IF, the playoffs will be a bit different. There are still two teams from each district that go to the playoffs however with the UIL's most recent realignment, the district numbering changed so a new set of teams will get first round byes. Here is what I am talking about.

REMEMBER based on PRESEASON picks, the first couple of rounds of the playoffs would look like this:

WEEK FOUR GAMES of the WEEK

# 8 Northside 3-0 travels to # 10 Follett 3-1. Northside is a 1 point favorite. Follett's lone loss was to # 2 Strawn 46-0 in WEEK ZERO at Hico. Follett is playing good defense right now. They will need to continue good defense to beat Northside who is known to give up points but better known for putting up points.

Paducah is at Ira and an8 point underdog. Paducah has mucho speed. Ira has had a couple of disappointing losses this season and will be looking to get things ready for district.

Valley has also had some tough losses this season and will have a stout test in Meadow. Meadow is undefeated and a 1 point favorite to beat Valley. If I was picking just one Game of the Week, this would be it and I would pick Valley by 10.

Silverton host Lorenzo and is a 6 point favorite probably because they are at home. Lorenzo is winless in 4 games and Silverton is 1-3. It will be a much needed win whoever comes out on top as we approach almost the middle of the season.

Support your team by going to the game.

Week Three Games of the Week RESULTS

I thought there were five games that were interesting on paper. No matter how they look on paper doesn't mean near as much as how they actually played out on the field.

# 3. Richland Springs hosted # 6 Gordon. Final had Richland Springs winning 60-50. They came from behind to win after trailing 42-28 with less than 7 minutes left in the 3rd. It was a great game. Richland Springs was a 17 point favorite.

# 12 Meadow traveled to # 16 Paducah. Meadow was a 7 point favorite. They won 58-24.

We all should have gone to May to watch the Tigers host Throckmorton. Throckmorton ranked # 7 was favored by 12 points over # 13 May. Are you sitting down? Throckmorton won the game 102-100 in 5 Ots. That was a game for the ages my friends.

Division 2 had a great match up between # 2 Borden County and # 7 Rule. Borden was a 23 point favorite and won the game 56-24.

# 9 Northside faced # 51 Saint Jo. Northside was favored to win by 45. The final was 54-6 Northside. I did not think they would beat Saint Jo by 45. I was wrong.

Overall, these were good games with the exception of the last one mentioned.

Six-man Geography Lesson

I doubt too many folks that are not fans of six-man read this blog. This is addressing newbies mostly. I have mentioned before there are two divisions in Texas Six-man High School Football as governed by the Texas U.I.L.. Each of the two divisions are divided into four regions. Are you with me so far? Each of the regions have three districts. Because of the odd number of districts, when playoff time rolls around, there are byes in each region. What that means is one of the districts winner and runner up gets a free pass in the first round of the playoffs. Lousy. Even so, that is the way it is. Does everyone understand? I will tell you more.

WEEK THREE GAMES OF THE WEEK

There are many great games to be played in WEEK THREE. I have chosen 5 games that intrigue me on paper. The number 0ne key match up has to be Division One defending State Champion Richland Springs hosting Gordon.

RS comes into the contest 3-0 averaging 69 points on offense and giving up 17 points on defense. Most of us think about RS scoring lots of points over the last few years. They certainly have done that! Don't forget their defense. If you do, you're in BIG trouble. By the way, RS is currently ranked #3 in the state in Division One. Gordon happens to be the #6 team in Division One. They also have a 3-0 record. The Longhorns are scoring 72 points a game and giving up 32 points a game. My opinion is Gordon has played the tougher schedule so far. Richland will win but may have a difficult time. The official spread has RS favored by 17. This should be a great game.

Division One match up between # 12 Meadow (3-0) at #16 Paducah (2-0) also looks good on paper. Meadow scores on the average 59 points a game. They have given up an average of 7 points a game. Grady scored 20 points on Meadow while Meadow shutout their other two opponents. Paducah averages 57 points while giving up 16 points a game. Meadow is favored by 7.

Yet another great looking game pits #7 Throckmorton (3-0) against #13 May (3-0). Throck is averaging 58 points a game while giving up an average of 19. May on the other hand averages 55 points a game and gives up an average of 21. Officially, May is a 12 point underdog at home. There May be a surprise here.

A great Division 2 match up is between Borden County and Rule. #2 Borden County(2-0) will host #7 Rule (2-1). Borden County is averaging 44 points a game and gives up 6 a game. Rule is averaging 49 a game and is giving up 16 on average. Borden County is a 23 point favorite. BTW, Rule's loss was to the hands of Division One #16 Paducah. The story I hear is Paducah out quicked the Bobcats on both sides of the ball.

#9 Northside (2-0) and # 51 Saint Jo (3-0) is the last game I am hyping for WEEK THREE. Saint Jo is home and they average 49 points a game and have only given up a total of 6 points through the first three games. They have been huge under dogs according to the official spread and are undefeated. This is Saint Jo's first season in Six-Man. They are doing real well. This week's game against Northside will welcome them to the real world of Six-Man. Northside averages 68 points a game and gives up an average of 42. Northside has moved up from Division 2 to Division 1. They are physical.
The official spread has Saint Jo a 45 point dog against the Indians. I am not picking an upset here but I don't believe the Indians will 45 Saint Jo.

To the best of my knowledge, all of these games are Friday night at 7:30 PM. Enjoy!

WEEK ONE IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR

I mentioned a couple of blogs ago that there were some games I would be interested in the outcome in WEEK ONE. If you had told me that after two games Ira and Valley would both be win less I don't think I would have thought that was possible. That is shallow on my part because anything is possible in high school football maybe especially so in Six-Man.

Ira after dropping their first game to Throckmorton at the Hico Super Six had to turn around and face Highland who had just moved into the #1 team in the state in Division 2. Highland made good on their ranking by beating Ira 36-30.

Valley also dropped their first game of the season to Gordon by the score of 60-38 at Hico. They were on the road again this time to face Northside. The Indians of Northside after making the move from Division 2 to Division 1 were ranked #10 in the state one position behind Valley. Northside came out on top by the score of 61-55.

Meadow and Grady caught the attention of my eye because they entered their contest this week ranked #17 and #15 respectively. Number 17 Meadow prevailed 70-20 though Grady was favored by 8. Meadow and Grady were both preseason picks to make the playoffs.

Rule and Knox City intrigued me because both programs have new head coaches. This is a Division 1 and Division 2 match up. As I have stated early and often, these match ups usually go to the Division 1 team and they usually are ugly. Not so this particular game as Rule, the Division 2 school, came out on top by 50-26. Knox City was actually a 45 point underdog to Rule. No one likes losing. No one wants to accept losing as a good thing. With that said, I believe the Knox City faithful are pleased even though they came out on the short end in this game.

In retrospect, the game between Woodson and Newcastle was worth looking at simply because Woodson went through a coaching change between WEEK ZERO and WEEK ONE. Under their new head coach Woodson rallied in the second half to win by the score of 55-44.

There will be more dribble to follow. Thanks for reading.

Coaching Change at Woodson

Wow. Reece Walker has resigned at Woodson and Paul Cotton is now HC. I wish Good Football to the Cowboys and good luck to Coach Walker. I do not know the difficulties or reasons for the change.

Looking forward and backwards

WEEK ZERO games definitely provided some surprises. Will WEEK ONE games do the same? Sometimes during the first week or two it is hard to determine what were true upsets. However you want to classify them, certain games this past week certainly raised some eyebrows.

Strawn 46 Follett 0. I suspect most people thought Strawn would win this game. I did. I was surprised by the margin of victory.

Throckmorton 42 Ira 24. Coach Mike Reed made is Throckmorton head coaching debut a winning one. No surprise in that. Coach Reed is an extremely good coach and knows how to motivate his players. Knowing your X's and O's can make one a very good coach. Knowing how to motivate your players is extremely important. Coach Reed excels in both areas and that is why he is one of the best coaches in Six-Man football.

Coach Toby Goodwin of Ira is also a fine coach. I spoke with him in Hico after the loss to Throckmorton this past Saturday. Coach Goodwin never has been one for making excuses and he wasn't making excuses about this loss. He was disappointed. He wasn't happy about the penalties his Bulldogs committed. Coaching isn't easy. Goodwin and his kids will try to rebound this week at home against Highland who is now ranked number one in the state in Division 2.

Gordon 60 Valley 38. Valley opened up ranked #2 in the state in the preseason poll. Gordon on the other hand ranked #17. From the git go, Gordon came out looking strong. As the result of their win the Gordon Longhorns are now ranked #8 in the state while Valley has dropped to #9. Coach Tyler and the Valley Patriots face #10 Northside on the road this week. Did I mention that coaching isn't easy?

This week has some key match ups. I will be keeping an eye on Valley @ Northside, Highland @ Ira, Meadow @ Grady, and Rule @ Knox City.

NOTE: The game between Rule and Knox City has been moved to Thursday night.

Your instructions for the week are to get out and see a Six-Man game.
