Looking forward and backwards

WEEK ZERO games definitely provided some surprises. Will WEEK ONE games do the same? Sometimes during the first week or two it is hard to determine what were true upsets. However you want to classify them, certain games this past week certainly raised some eyebrows.

Strawn 46 Follett 0. I suspect most people thought Strawn would win this game. I did. I was surprised by the margin of victory.

Throckmorton 42 Ira 24. Coach Mike Reed made is Throckmorton head coaching debut a winning one. No surprise in that. Coach Reed is an extremely good coach and knows how to motivate his players. Knowing your X's and O's can make one a very good coach. Knowing how to motivate your players is extremely important. Coach Reed excels in both areas and that is why he is one of the best coaches in Six-Man football.

Coach Toby Goodwin of Ira is also a fine coach. I spoke with him in Hico after the loss to Throckmorton this past Saturday. Coach Goodwin never has been one for making excuses and he wasn't making excuses about this loss. He was disappointed. He wasn't happy about the penalties his Bulldogs committed. Coaching isn't easy. Goodwin and his kids will try to rebound this week at home against Highland who is now ranked number one in the state in Division 2.

Gordon 60 Valley 38. Valley opened up ranked #2 in the state in the preseason poll. Gordon on the other hand ranked #17. From the git go, Gordon came out looking strong. As the result of their win the Gordon Longhorns are now ranked #8 in the state while Valley has dropped to #9. Coach Tyler and the Valley Patriots face #10 Northside on the road this week. Did I mention that coaching isn't easy?

This week has some key match ups. I will be keeping an eye on Valley @ Northside, Highland @ Ira, Meadow @ Grady, and Rule @ Knox City.

NOTE: The game between Rule and Knox City has been moved to Thursday night.

Your instructions for the week are to get out and see a Six-Man game.
