Richardson backs Dean

Today Gov. Bill Richardson said he will back former Gov. Howard Dean's bid to become the new chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

But he didn't do so without a few caveats.

"The race is essentially over," Richardson said. "The New Mexico delegation is doing the same. He's won fair and square."

That is presumably a reference to New Mexico Democratic Party Chairman John Wertheim's announcement this week that he too was behind Dean's candidacy.

Richardson, who this year took over as chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, had some advice for Dean.

"He needs to work the West and South, to project a more centrist, moderate image," Richardson said. "The Democratic governors are going to work with him."

That group, Richardson said, had originally backed former U.S. Sen. Robert Kerry for the post. Kerry dropped out early in the process.

What we really need to project is a DEMOCRATIC image -- one that communicates the many core issues we stand for and that we will fight for. Enough with the Republican-lite already. People want leaders who stand up for what they believe in, not change their "image" according to focus groups. What we are going to get with Dean is REFORM of the Party so that the people have more to say about what we stand for, and the power mongers and "consultants" way less. Wake up Governor!
