Jerome Jenkins

January 10, 2006

I wrote a story today about Jerome Jenkins, a safety from Sugar Land, Texas, (near Houston) who graduated early and will be joining the Lobos this month for spring workouts.

His high school coach said Jenkins is a monster on the field and pretty soft-spoken away from it.
He praised Jenkins' ability to read offenses and line up his teammates on defense. If Jenkins' football IQ is, in fact, that good, then it would be a big boost for the Lobos. They had plenty of talent in the backfield last season but no one like ex-safety Josh Bazinet to get the guys all lined up. The goal of Rocky's defense is to fool the offense and capitalize on last-second adjustments. Last year's guys just couldn't figure out where to go on a lot of plays. They didn't struggle for lack of effort or talent, it was more mental errors and inability to make adjustments. The flaws were even harder to overcome because the Mountain West featured a lot of experienced offenses capable of exploiting New Mexico's defense.
Jenkins said he will be driving to Albuquerque and hit campus Thursday or Friday. He will be moving into the dorms with the five JC spring transfers.

the lobos have gotten a steal in jerome jenkins. i watched this kid play . and he is as solid as they come. very good technique. slides down the line like a pro and has a nose for the ball.i once saw him after getting his ankle taped ip on the sideline at the whole crowds dismay. every one could see the not on his ankle from the stands(thats how huge it was) no way was this kid gonna be able to play like that. his dad(noted middle school coac jason jones ) was very concerned and summoned this kid out of the game. well it was the first game of the season and there defense was one of the top ranked in the city. pearland had just scored and went up by three touchdowns. when this kid insisted that he go back in the game.on the ensuing play, he pressured the QB into a fumble where as the running back scooped up th elive ball and found a crease to the sideline where he was streaking for a touchdown when with about 5 yards to go the stands began to rise. because there was a kempner player ensiung with the beauty of a fine tuned locomotive. it couldnt be...yes it was jerome jenkins had gotten up after tackling the QB on a severely sprained ankle and ran down on of pearlands fastest players. had to be sheer will on a football field. he was not as fast as that kid on track. but on that football field that kid is something special. a vincent young on defense. the whole demeanor of that defense shifted when jerome jenkins was on the field. those kids beleived they could ..they only lost by 3 points after his return late in that 4 quarter. with him having to play some running back as well in which he scored 2 of those touchdowns. this went on for the rest of the year. the lobos have got a definite nfl prospect. HE IS A COACHES DREAM!!!...he has been living with one all his life. must may a coches job easier. I WILL BE WATCHING THE LOBOS AS OF NOW ALL THE WAY FROM HOUSTON. (NOTED AUTHOR KERRY E. WAGNER-"SHE DID THAT")
