Best win ever?
I've got another, more in-depth Web story on the Lobos' win over Florida the Tribune posted this afternoon.
I will update my blog in just a little bit with a roundup of notes from each team still standing in Tucson.
Abbie Letz will be limited to just shooting drills today because of a sore back. I asked her why she took a charge in the final minute of the game against Florida. She replied, "I thought she was gonna stop and I reallly wish she had."
She promised she will, however, play against Baylor.
Gary made an interesting comment on my blog last night or early this morning, arguing the New Mexico did not play its best first half of the season against Baylor.
I think it was, by far, the Lobos best effort. I know Minnesota was impressive, but this was against a Florida team that has beaten LSU in Gainesville and Tennessee on the road. The Gators have a more athletic and frenetic style of play and New Mexico completely shut it down.
It was the biggest road win ever for the program and first road win in the NCAA Tournament.
It was so emphatic, the win was the talk of all the other coaches and reporters today.
What do you think?
Was it the best half the Lobos played all season?
Was it the Lobos biggest win ever?
Gary, it'd be great if you could share why you don't think it wasn' t the Lobos' best half of the season.

Best Half? I watched it again this morning and it surely ranks right up there with the second half of the MWC Championship game in 2004. The biggest difference is that this one came against better competition. The first half of the Minnesota game this season is also in the mix. Again, any team from the SEC that has beaten both Tennessee and LSU this season must be considered better competition. Then there is the importance and location of the game. Hmmmm, tough choice. Could very well be. I didn't see the second half of the Mississippi game (I think they were a 3 seed), so someone else will have to comment on that one.
It's certainly the biggest win, but then it seems like we get to keep saying that year after year with the Lady Lobos.

Oops, it was the 11 point second half comeback and overtime win against Miami I was thinking of, not Mississippi State.

Even though the 2003 2nd round win against Miss St was in the Pit, I still rank that game as the high water mark for the LLobos. Jordan Adams was a dominent center for UNM that day, even stuffing a LaToya Thomas driving layup. LaToya Thomas was the best pure shooter UNM has ever faced and despite her 27 (or so) points the 2003 LLobos never trailed. I don't know if either half of that game can be considered better than the most recent first half against FL, but a convincing win against a 3 seed still trumps a dominent half of play against a clearly befuddled and poise-less FL squad. Win against Baylor Monday evening in Tempe, and we'll talk.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, I was trying to say I thought that was the best half ever! An away game on national TV during an NCAA tournament against a very good team no less.
I feel this game was another landmark moment in the program. We keep making those steps upward. Five years ago getting invited to the Big Dance was a big deal, now it is expected. Then getting that first win in the Tournament was the next step, and we did that and more, but at home which seemed to lessen the importance of that win in the eyes of some.
So what was the next step we needed to take - win a Tournament game away from home. And we accomplished that in an impressive fashion, to say the least.
I still rate the Miami game as our best ever, mainly because of how electrifing the Pit was that night and how we won the game. I will never forget the performance of Mandi to get the game into overtime, and of Jordan in the overtime.
The problem with rating our best games is we are starting to have quite a few worthy to put in a top 10 or 5 list. I would have to rate this way -
1. Miami win
2. Florida win
3. MSU win
4 and 5 - Probably some MWC tournament games, but my memory is too foggy to come up with actual games.

I think that question is very debatable. Their have been a number of wins over the years that were "Huge" and groundbreaking wins over the years, such as:
1) How about in Flan's first year they made it to the WAC Finals
2) First NCAA win against Miami in OT
3) Second NCAA win against MS State sending them to the sweet 16 for the first time
4) First time beating Utah in Salt Lake City
5) Multiple MWC title game wins, and first WAC Title win to send them to their first NCAA tourney
6) First Road win over a Top 25 opponentHowever, can we all agree, if they beat Baylor, a #3 seed and defending national champs on a nuetral court, the debate stops there?
