Bowl name game

March 31, 2006

I have a story in today's Trib about New Mexico potentially launching a new bowl game.
ESPN is providing the New Mexico Sports Authority with a $2 million line of credit. ESPN will broadcast the game on one of its networks. It will pair teams from the Mountain West and Western Athletic conferences. The game will be played sometime before Christmas this year.
All that's missing is approval from the NCAA bowl licensing committee. The group will meet April 27-28 in Orlando to decide the bowl's fate.
UNM Athletics Director Rudy Davalos and WAC Commissioner Karl Benson expect the plan to be approved.
So now comes the fun part.
What would you name the new bowl game?
The Chile Bowl?
The Balloon Bowl?
The Land of Enchantment Bowl?
Post your suggestions in the comments section, and we'll publish the best ones in The Tribune.

I like the Chile bowl but it should be more specific like maybe the "Green Chile Bowl"
another fun name would be Valley Bowl, Big I Bowl, Burque Bowl, Old West Bowl, Shootout Bowl(minimum of 80 points per game), Ambition Bowl, or even the Rio Grande Bowl. But my favorite is The Taco Burger Bowl!

I thought it already had a name. What could be better than the Chile Bowl? A Bowl of Chile?

the chilie bowl is the best name. many of the other bowl games are named after the state crop,(sugar, cotton, orange...) plus fans from other teams can actually come and ejoy a new mexican chilie bowl

did you mean chili like the food or Chile the country?

The Duke City Bowl? Maybe too similar to the Music City and the Motor City Bowls.

Some others may include the Enchilada Bowl, Tamale Bowl, and the Hacienda Bowl.

It should be named "The Armpit Bowl" after the city and the state.

I would name it the "Toilet Bowl" because this whole situation is a bunch of crap. There are already 16 to 20 bowls that are not worthy of being held. Too many teams are being rewarded for mediocrity. A 6 and 5 record is not worthy of anything other than preparing for the following year. The Lobos or anyone else with an average record should be home watching the successful programs on television.

Chile Bowl is an obvious and good name.
Other options might be the Sandia Bowl, Turquoise Bowl, Volcanoe Bowl, Atomic Bowl...

The real problem is sponsors and trying not to become the Weiser Lock Bowl.

How about Pace Salsa Bowl? Hatch Chile Bowl?

The Chile Bowl is awful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I sure hope that Latta and the powers that be are a bit more creative than that. How about the Zia Bowl?

I think it all depends on the sponsor, maybe Cream Land Dairies a local company can use the game to go more national. Cream Land Diaries Ice Cream Bowl or the local casinos can sponser, sponsor it can be the Native American Bowl

I disagree with michael s and anyone else who thinks the CHILE BOWL is awful. It's what New Mexico represents for the most part. I like the Chile Bowl. If not, then maybe the ZIA BOWL. It should be something representative of the STATE not just Albuquerque.

The Enchantment Bowl.

"The Land of Enchantment Bowl" is too long.

"The Chile Bowl" is stupid. Very high-school.

You could call it the Gillette Mach-3 "Oh well nothing else is on I might as well watch this" Bowl.

Those of you who loathe the idea of a New Mexico bowl game may enjoy Richard Steven's column http://www.abqtrib.com/albq/sp_ncaa/article/0,2564,ALBQ_19874_4588432,00.html on the topic.
One note about the distinction betweeen chile and chilli.
Chile refers to the vegetable and the cash crop of Hatch, N.M. Chilli, along with its derivatives chili and chillie, refer to beef, bean, tomato, onion and occassionally chile mixture popular in Texas and throughout the Southwest. There's a stranger form involving corn, potatoes and pasta in the midwest and cities such as Cincinnati.
You may pronounce it chilli, but if you're referring to New Mexico's favorite food, it is spelled chile.
It's tempting, but I'll settle for the spelling lesson and hold off on a Spanish pronunciation seminar.

The Southwest Bowl (maybe we can inspire Herb Kelleher to put in some free tickets) or how about the Mile High Bowl (why should Denver always get the credit?) or lastly the Fur Bowl (you'll need it cause it will be COLD).
