A mess at Penn State

April 21, 2006

I can't figure out how Penn State could make the rare move of fining women's basketball coach Rene Portland $10,000 and requiring her to attend diversity training after a university investigation ruled she had harrassed a former player Portland thought was gay.
If there's enough evidence to impose a hefty fine, Portland should have been fired.
ESPN.com's Graham Hays wrote a great column on the issue.
What do you think?

She should have been canned, no doubt about it. That kind of behavior is unacceptable, especially from a coach.

I think all you have to do is look at the recent OSU case against librarian Scott Savage to see how ridiculous the term "harassment" has become when it comes to sexual orientation. Much more acceptable than the questioning of the moral soundness of being gay is the hatred of anybody who even mentions the word "gay" and the word "wrong" in the same sentence.
