New Mexico Bowl approved

April 27, 2006

I know, I laughed too when I first heard about it.
First an NFL team, then an NBA team, then a bowl game.
But the NCAA approved the New Mexico Bowl in Orlando today, certifying it as one of 31 bowl games to played during the 2006 season.
The Associated Press issued the first official word from the NCAA, although the Lobo football complex was buzzing with the good news by early afternoon.
The New Mexico Sports Authority and major bowl supporters have a press conference scheduled for Monday morning once it's proud contingent returns from Orlando.
The game will be played on Dec. 23 in University Stadium, pitting a Mountain West Conference team against a Western Athletic Conference team. The Lobos can only appear once every three years thanks to their homefield advantage. Before you get too upset about that, remember the Lobos probably don't want to keep appearing in their hometown bowl likely awarded to the league's fourth-place team. It's just plain sad when Boise State trounces second rate competition on its blue field year after year.
Check out tomorrow's Tribune for more New Mexico Bowl details.
While you're waiting, let me know what you think of the new bowl game.
Is it good for New Mexico?
Does the college football landscape need 31 bowl games?

I love it! It can only be good pub for the uni and state. By the same token, there were too many Bowl games 10 years ago, but if they were going to add another one (and this won't be the last), then I would want it to be here. Hopefully, the city will support it.

Yet another great coup for the greatest AD in the United States!

On a sidenote, I have heard that the trade of Carlton to Fort Worth has been approved, with the Trib getting two sour-milk cows and a case of Milk-Duds in return.

Can you confirm this, Iliana?

The negotiations are very hush-hush.
I'm all for the Milk Duds. I'm also lobbying for an endless supply of coffee, for those who must do his work in the short term, and a player to be named later.

Lol! Well, don't work too hard. We sure don't want to see you leaving us anytime soon!

Great for New Mexico. I hope tradition starts and the city really supports the bowl game.

Like Rocky said, this helps the little guys. Since teams can play 12 games, beat D-II teams that count for wins, and only have to be 6-6 to play in the bowl games.

This BCS vs. "others" is a hugh underdog story, but I like how the MWC has gone about tring to break in.

There are too many bowls. I believe we will reach critical mass at just about the time a playoff is started. Who wants to see a 6-6 team play in a bowl game? I don't.

Great to know UNM Stadium/Albuquerque will host a bowl game...the timing is right on, but the name has room for improvement. Like the Chile Bowl (the Hottest NCAA Bowl game) or maybe the Turquoise Bowl (the Gem of Bowl games). Interesting how ESPN will proceed with changing the name.
