UNM softball coach resigns

July 19, 2006

The first coaching change of the Paul Krebs era at UNM is under way.
Softball coach Kim Newbern resigned Wednesday and said in a statement released by the university she will pursue interests outside of coaching.

Rumors of players unhappy with the coach surrounded the program, which enjoyed some short-lived success during the past year but never finished higher than fifth place in the Mountain West Conference during her tenure. Newbern went 94-137-1 in four seasons leading the Lobos, including a 19-60 mark in conference play.

Krebs, who has been the athletics director since June, said Newbern chose to resign and he does not foresee any other coaching changes on the horizon.

UPDATE: Here's a story I wrote for Thursday's Tribune about Newbern's resignation.

A new broom sweep clean. The softball coach performed poorly. It is time to clean house and apply the parable of the talents.
To whom much is given much is asked. Once upon a time our coaches could complain about facilities, budgets, and other exuces to perform poorly, but no more.
Just win baby! But make sure of the smarts.
