DirecTV says no to the Mountain

July 27, 2006

Bad news for the Lobos fans who kept bugging me to find out how much DirecTV would charge viewers for the Mountain, the new regional network from CSTV devoted to Mountain West Conference athletics. Darris Gringeri, DirecTV's vice president for public relations, said the network has no plans to add the Mountain to its channel lineup and doubts it will happen any time soon. Mountain West Conference and UNM officials remain confident CSTV and Comcast, which now owns 50 percent of the Mountain and is handling distribution deals, will make sure the Mountain finds a home on DirecTV before the start of the football season.
Here's my story from today's Tribune with all the details.

And since I know you are going to ask, this Web site has contact info for DirecTV and this one has contact info for Dish Network.

Does any of this change how you view the Mountain West Conference's deal with CSTV? Post your thoughts in the comments section of the blog.

I took the move from ESPN to CSTV as the MWC making a statement that they refused to be leveraged in the inconsiderate manner that they had been in the part of their former broadcast partners. It was not an amicable relationship, ESPN had no desire to change anything, so the MWC moved on.

Obviously, there weren't a lot of alternatives.

On the surface, it appears that CSTV is not stepping up and helping leverage any deals on the part of the conference. I suspect this may be because they have not much in the way of a position of strength, but who knows.

Anyway, what's done is done, and the only recourse we, as fans, have is to become vocal. Lobo fans, please use the links Iliana has left for you to voice your displeasure about the satellite companies' decisions, or use this one to contact Darris Gringeri directly: dagringeri@directv.com

Sigh! As much as I dread it, it looks like I'm headed back to cable. At least I have the option -- Lobo fans out in the hinterlands don't even have that...thanx for the e-mail addresses, Iliana, I took advantage of them.
