My Heisman Vote

November 28, 2006

It's just about time for me to turn in my Heisman Trophy ballot.

I'm pretty sure I'll vote for Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith, so the more exciting part is what I do with my second and third place vote on the ballot.

Do I go with running backs Darren McFadden, of Arkansas, and Steve Slaton, of West Virginia, or snub them because they're sophomores?

Does Notre Dame's Brady Quinn deserve to be in the top three?

Does BYU's John Beck deserve one of my votes? How about Colt Brennan from Hawaii or Ian Johnson from Boise State. I'm all about the little guy, but did these underdogs earn it?

Decisions, decisions.

Help me out here. Share you thoughts in the comments section of my blog.

Well, obviously Troy Smith deserves should win. As for #2, I'd go with Brady Quinn. He's really the only one that can challege for it, IMO. I'd vote McFadden with #3. He's an incredible running back.

Seems like a down year in terms of superstar talent in the college ranks. Why I remember back in 1982 (queue up the gramps soundtrack)when Herschel Walker won the Heisman. Guys like John Elway, Dan Marino, and Eric Dickerson (all future hall of famers) had to settle for the consolation prize. They just picked a bad year to graduate - that was maybe the most stacked group of candidates ever.

No problem with your picks Iliana, though I do think Beck is vastly under-rated due to his late emergence. He may even be more successful in the pro ranks than Troy, though that isn't part of the voting criteria.

The three best players in the country, head and shoulders above anyone else, are Troy Smith, Darren McFadden and Calvin Johnson. Johnson has no shot to win though,

The best player in college emerges over a career of four years. My bias in favor of graduating seniors precludes underclassmen who may turn out to be duds later.

John Beck. All the way
