Anything can happen in March

March 17, 2007

No. 13 seed Marist, a team the Lobos beat in The Pit last year, upset No. 4 seed Ohio State 67-63. It was the first NCAA Tournament win for any team from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Marist looked a lot like last year's team that faced UNM, with several of the star players from this game in the starting lineup last season. The Red Foxes' coach, Brian Giorgis, is one of the winningest coaches in New York high school hoops history.

Elsewhere, No. 3 Arizona State narrowly dodged an upset by No. 14 UC-Riverside, winning 57-50. The Highlanders had a 10-point lead with eight minutes left before going on a 19-2 run to close out the game.

No. 11 BYU lost to No. 6 Louisville 80-54, giving the Mountain West Conference an 0-1 record so far in the tournament. The Cougars went ice cold from long range and fell to the Cardinals, led by former Colorado State coach Tom Collen.
