Catching up with Porche Torrance

March 27, 2007

Porche Torrance, a Fort Worth-area athlete who will be a freshman on the UNM women's basketball team next season, is catching women's NCAA Tournament regional games in Dallas. Tonight she'll see North Carolina take on Purdue live. "It's been great seeing all the games so far," Torrance said when I reached her at home Tuesday afternoon. "I got to see Lisa Leslie in person for the first time. She's an amazing player and it was cool to see her in person instead of just on TV."

While she has been impressed by the players she has seen, Torrance said her favorite current college athlete is Tennessee's Candace Parker. Parker and the Lady Vols are playing in the Dayton regional. "She's just an amazing player," Torrance said. "She just does it all."

Parker has been especially impressive in this year's NCAA Tournament, dominating every matchup. I wouldn't be surprised if she led the Lady Vols to their first national title since 1998.

There will be a lot of opportunities for freshmen to start in the Fall.
----
Only Brandi from the 2006-07 team has a secure starting job at the point.
----
Beggin is only an average player with excellent footspeed.
----
It is heresy, but opposing teams have learned how to defend against March's catch and leap game. Dionne's game has very little mobility with or without the ball.
----
Consequenlty, the newbies have a real shot to start.
----
Most intriguing is the possibility that Ansley can be the stud at the five. She could take the job from the onset like Jordan Adams.
----
There are some very interestingplayers comming into the program such as Best and Kielpinski.
----
Do not overlook the Adamson who may be the best of the lot. I like her rebel streak, which is what the 2006-07 team lacked.
----
The sophs may just end up becoming the back ups to the frosh.
----
It is going to be a zoo. Phlanagan is a control freak who is also indecisive.
----
Go Lobos!

AndrewLeoLopez the dribble that you spew is only out done by the format of the dribble.
UNM is very lucky to have a coach with the ability of Coach Flanagan and your bile is rally getting old. Furthermore, please reframe from your scrutiny of the players abilities it only adds more attention to your inept insight.

I think Amy will start at the point with Brandi at the two. Dionne is entrenched at the four, and you have to give the five to Angela until someone proves they can handle it better. The three is the only job that's wide open right now, and there are a bunch of players that can step up.

Lopez, you are dead wrong about Amy Beggin. She's a defensive sparkplug who needs to work on her shot, but she's a great leader and she's only going to get better.

UNM is not as lucky to have Phlanagan as Wisconsin-GreenBay is to have the coach who just beat Phlanagan.
----
The have not coach just whipped the have in abundance coach.
----
Phlanagan is just not a very good game coach.
----
Go Lobos!

Roy Shears: reframe does not mean refrain. Shears, you are as short of synapses as Phlanagan.
----
Perhaps short of synapses Shears should avoid trying use vocabulary to big for his britches?
----
Shears might also pay attention to use of the apostrophe to show possession.
----
Go Lobos!

AndrewLeoLopez continues to build flawed analysis on top of flawed analysis.
-----
His basic assumption is that Coach Don Flanagan is inept and only succeeds because of all the advantages he has. Who built the Lady Lobo program in the first place? AndrewLeoLopez?
-----
Anyone who understands this basic flaw in AndrewLeoLopez's comments also realizes that he has no idea what he is talking about concerning any aspect of the program, coaches or players.
-----
It is actually quite sad how AndrewLeoLopez demonstrates his flawed logic and knowledge on such a public forum. Sadder still that he doesn't even know how unintelligible are his rantings.

Dense Lobo. One and done is in the record books for 2007. Implications are pretty clear to me.
----
Wisconsin-Green Bay has nothing of the resources behind its women's basketball program like Phlanagan has behind his program: facilities, fans, and finances.
----
The new multi-purpose facility at Wisconsin-Green opened last year with seating for 4,000 or fewer than Johnson Gym.
----
Nonetheless, Wisconsin-Green Bay's coach recruits well enough to win consistently and win coach of the year honors.
----
Phlanagan did not recruit Garcheck, a once in a lifetime player, who as much as anyone built the women's basketball program.
----
Phlanagan inherited Abbie Garcheck. He has never once in 12 years recruited her like.
----
Never have said Phlanagan was inept...just not a good game coach, not a very good recruiter of players 6'2" plus, and not fair at all to girls from New Mexico.
----
Dense Lobo. Hold your breath for Phlanagan's first top fifty player.
----
All of the declining number of the Phlanagan Phlack Claque can forget about a top 25 recruiting class. Will not happen on Phlanagan's watch.
----
Anyone who like Dense Lobo does not like pointed comment is welcome to move to a society where the theocracy or the government determine the parameters of public discourse.
----
Go Lobos!

Iliana: It's painful to watch, this guy beating his drum like the TV battery rabbit trapped in a corner, still going and going, getting nowhere. Please euthanize him (or his posts, at least).

I find it amusing that those of you who do not agree with AndrewLeoLopez and his opinions continue to read his posts. Why do you torture yourselves?? I do not know the man, but c'mon people...you need to LET IT GO!! If you don't like what he has to say DON'T READ IT. Personally , I think he sometimes makes some valid points. GO LOBOS!!

To: JAX

I have no problem with people who don't agree with me or with how Flanagan runs his program. Nobody is perfect. But I do resent snakes in the grass spewing their venom on public forums where parents, recruits and other people who have at most casual familiarity with the LL program, might be influenced by this fetid disinformation. This particular slithering single synapse guises his forked tongue in feigned fan-ship which makes him even worse. Absolutely nothing he writes is valid because his heart is black and his premise wretched. So I will make sure that if a potential recruit happens to read his bile, that they also find intelligent counter on which they can hang their hat a know that the program, coach and Albuquerque can be a great match for them.

One final point about comparing programs. Based on AndrewLeoLopez logic the BCS school that UNM beat in the first round in last year's NCAA tournament is underperforming and it is their coach's fault. What a maroooon!
