Big changes
As many of you already know, my job at the Tribune is changing in a big way. Jeremy Fowler, our Lobo men's basketball beat writer, left last week for a job at the Orlando Sentinel. It's his hometown paper, and I wish him nothing but good fortune in the future. It was great working with Jeremy for three years.
The Tribune, like most newspapers throughout the country, isn't adding any new full-time staff members right now. As a result, I will be taking over Lobo men's basketball in addition to Lobo football. I will be getting some help from Richard Stevens (yes, he does a ton of great work for us) and Phil Parker, whose formal title is sports copy chief but his real job is the early morning sports editor. Richard, Phil, sports editor Mike Garcia and possibly a few other people will split the responsibility of covering women's basketball. I'll also pitch in as often as possible with women's basketball coverage, but my plate is going to be awfully full. You can still e-mail me with suggestions about the Trib's women's basketball coverage. I will keep a section of the blog alive for women's basketball entries and remain an advocate for strong women's basketball coverage.
I'm really bummed about losing the women's basketball beat. I met a lot of great people and really enjoyed my two years covering the beat. At the same time, I'm really excited about the new challenge of covering men's basketball and the opening of the Steve Alford era.
My goals are pretty simple. I want to do the best job I can covering my new beats, offer a lot more options for fans in the print and online editions of the Tribune and do my job so well you don't really notice our sports staff is short one person.
Wish me luck ...

Congrats, Iliana--I wondered if you might land the men's BB beat. You've done a great job with the women, and I'm sorry the Trib can't put someone else on it full time--but these are challenging times in the print/Internet transition.
So here's a men's question: I haven't seen the name Nweke (I think that's right) on the Trib site yet, but I think it may be important. Whaddaya know?

Looking forward to your coverage of the men's basketball program. You did a great job with the women. It's gonna be a fun season!

TheRedMenace.com spoke briefly with Will Brown today where he let us know that he has committed to play for the University of New Mexico. Unfortunately, Mr. Brown was in a bad cell zone so we weren't able to have a long conversation. Brown will attend Patterson Academy along with fellow Lobo commit Isaiah Rusher and will join UNM for the 2008-09

So sorry to see you go. Please don't allow the Trib to dilute the women's coverage! Spreading the responsibility among several writers is a terrible idea - it will do nothing positive for the program. Please ask your editors to reconsider this move. The men receive an inordinate amount of coverage, and have done little to deserve it. When is the last time they won 4 out of 5 league championships? How about 4 out of 5 league games? C'mon Trib, back a winner!

gus, you sound like a big women's BB fan. Congrats. But the money cow at UNM is men's BB. It is going to get more coverage than anything else in Albuquerque, period. It is the biggest game in town. Hopefully, coach Alford will have the type of success with the men's program as the women's program is having.

I lke both bball teams, but as some know from the boards, I like to follow the women's recruiting as well. After Mike got sick I could post something I heard recruiting, Iliana would follow up; I've also e-mailed her in the past. Recently I'v put some names on the boards I saw-but there seems to be no one to follow up. Iliana will do a great job with the men's ball team, but the women's fans also like to know who's being recruited. Hopefully someone will take some initiative to follow up some and maybe get some comments from players, AAU coaches.

So sorry to hear the rumor that Nikki Nelson is hurt. Hope it is a rumor, as so many of us were looking forward to seeing her in action. Get better soon!
I recently watched a rerun of the 'bos Mtn West tournament game against BYU. The amount of effort that both teams exerted was phenomenal, especially considering what we later learned about the Lobo's injuries. The Lobos have nothing to be ashamed of in losing to Green Bay. As always, they gave it everything they had, and should be proud of their accomplishments.
