Dare to "Darkon"

July 28, 2007

If you missed it last night, you have two more chances to see "Darkon," the surprisingly sophisticated documentary about adults who play live-action medieval-war fantasy games. We reviewed it in December from the Santa Fe Film Festival. (Click here.) It plays at the Guild tonight at 10 and midnight.

Elsewhere on the new-releases front: "Sunshine," from the eclectic Danny Boyle ("Trainspotting," "28 Days Later" and "Millions") looks like an interesting sci-fi drama in the realm of last year's satisfying "The Fountain." We give it a B-plus. "No Reservations," the American remake of "Mostly Martha," is a pleasant romantic comedy with Catherine Zeta-Jones, Aaron Eckhart and Abigail Breslin. It gets a B. Interested in "The Simpsons Movie"? Check out Phil Parker's review below. And we give a B-minus to "The Page Turner" at the Guild.

Would you rather hear music tonight? It's the last night of Summerfest in Civic Plaza, and I interviewed the headliner, Darren Cordova, one of the biggest stars in New Mexico music. Read the profile here.

If you love DARKON as we do, keep your eyes peeled for the possibility of MONSTER CAMP at the Film Center or Festival by Cullen Hoback, director of last year's FREEDOM STATE.
