This just in
By Carrie Seidman
As of 10:30 a.m. this Thursday (6/8), the new Downtown Gourmet grocery will officially open its doors at 900 Central Avenue S.W., next to the Silver Moon Lodge.
Owner Carey Smoot says it will be groceries only for the moment -- and probably for the next month, until the kitchen is finished and she can begin offering takeout foods.
But that's no reason to stay away.
By the end of the week, the retail shelves will be fully stocked, she says. With -- among other things:
Bread from Sage Bakehouse (delivered Saturdays)
Dairy from Rasband Dairy
Lori's Eggs
Red Rock coffee
And 39 varieties of cheese....
Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
Here's an idea: If you live in the area, walk or bike over to the Downtown Farmer's Market first thing Saturday morning, then head over to Carey's for the remainder of fixings for a great vegetarian meal. You'll be healthy and happy and all those people burning up $3 a gallon will be green with envy.

the building seems rather small, how is a kitchen going to fit in here. what about inventories. from reading about this you would think this is some kind of big deal. I can't see it. How many square feet is the building? this is just a heads up to the public....thers's no parking???

According to the owner, the space is 1,200 square feet and there is parking for approximately 10 cars.
I don't think anyone thinks this is the be-all and end-all of grocery stores -- and the owner doesn't profess it to be. But many who live in the area are excited just to have a place close by to pick up a loaf of good bread and a hunk of cheese.

I'm thinking of offering Kenny, The Fishhugger's salmon in the freezer case. Any comments? Eash week I will be receiving deliveries of veggies and fruits, when available, from the farmer's at the market. Sage Bakehouse bread will be in every Saturday morning until the need grows to everyday.
