More recruiting

August 23, 2006

For all you recruiting junkies, here is my latest update.
I spoke today with Rick McConnell, father of Lobo oral commitment Mickey McConnell. The 6-1 point guard is a Dobson High standout out of Phoenix, and he happens to be making the same Sept. 1 official visit to UNM as 6-4 Desert Vista guard Ty Abbott, also out of Phoenix.
The two have known each other since Little League baseball, Rick said.
They battle it out on the high school and AAU basketball scenes.
They're friends.
See where I'm going with this?
A little friendly persuasion from McConnell could help Abbott, who is becoming a prized recruit, gravitate toward Albuquerque for four years.
Maybe McConnell will promise to pass Abbott the ball all the time.
Numerous schools have offered a scholarship to Abbott, including Utah, Wichita State, Vanderbilt and Tulsa. He's undoubtedly the Lobos' primary target right now.
McConnell's no chump, either. Though not many offers hit the table because of his early oral commitment, McConnell generated interest from Purdue and St. Mary's.
Also making a Sept. 1 visit is 6-7 post Gaby Ngoundjo out of Little Rock, Ark.

Great stuff - thanks for the news. The Tony Danridge article today was exceptional!
