Cockfighting ban passes key committee

February 01, 2007

By Kate Nash

Members of the Senate Conservation Committee on a 5-3 vote just approved a ban on cockfighting in New Mexico. The move is significant because the committee in the past has always rejected the move.

An elated Senate Majority Whip Mary Jane Garcia said she thinks she has the votes to get her bill past the Senate Judiciary Committee and to the Senate floor. Her chances from there look good, as the House in the past has passed the bill and Gov. Bill Richardson is expected to sign the bill.

A stuffed-to-the-gills Senate chamber was home base for the committee meeting. The room was so hot people fanned themselves as they listened to debate.
