AG: No redistricting until after census

July 23, 2007

By Kate Nash

Attorney General Gary King says the Legislature must wait to redraw lines of House districts.

The AG issued an opinion this morning after Rep. Antonio "Moe" Maestas had asked whether it would be kosher to redraw the lines now to deal with the breakneck growth on the West Side. But King says that will have to wait until after the 2010 census.

The decision isn't a suprise. But if I recall correctly, Maestas made a campaign promise that he'd bring up the possibility of rejiggering House districts for better representation on the West Side.

Surely, those districts will get some serious revamping when the Legislature does get around to redistricting. . .
