Committee ponders decriminalizing some traffic offenses

July 26, 2007

By Kate Nash

The interim Courts, Corrections and Justice Committee this afternoon will hear from Bernalillo County officials who want some traffic offenses to be civil offenses.

The idea is to help the county control its ever-problematic jail population.

Here's what I wrote about the idea today. I'll try to update later from the meeting, which will be in Santa Rosa.

What do you think? Good idea or bad?

UPDATE:

Not too much happened at the meeting, frankly. Here's what I put together for today's paper.
