Preserving the moment

(Craig Fritz/Tribune)

During their first ballet class, the tiny dancers are certainly cute, but what catches my eye is the crowd of parents jockeying for position to snap a shot of their dainty girl.

I've been told by family that camera usage wanes as the age of your child and the size of your family increases. Nobody seems to have informed Lisa Edge, pictured here, of this. She photographs daughter Hannah during each of her pre-ballet classes. Why? "What if she finally got skipping after months?" Engel says.

Another mother, Teresa Reyes, made sure she captured images of her daughter with both a still and video camera, even sitting in on the class while the other parents watched from behind a glass wall.

I admit to being at my daughter's first class with camera in hand and can identify with parents who don't slow down.

After all, a quick estimation tells me, my wife and I have already pressed the button on our cameras more than 25,000 times.
