Weighing in on the Cove

The Asheville-Citizen Times has weighed in in favor of shuttle buses to replace cars in the Cove. I wonder how long it will take the KNS? A number of commenters on my earlier post are more in favor of an admission fee. Trouble is the Smokies charter (a document I'm sure exists but I've never seen) evidently says the Smokies cannot charge user fees. Another problem with fees is they go to the general fund...not the Smokies. "So change the law" you may say...well that literally would take an act of Congress...I'd like to think they have bigger fish to fry....like building useless roads in their districts. So I'm favoring shuttle buses. Sorry Townsend. If you think that will hurt you, I beg to differ. No force seems big enough to stop the growth of tourism around the Smokies. We can cut down all the trees (they grew back!..well most did), pollute the air, bring in hordes of invasives, ring it with roads and reservoirs..doesn't matter - people just keep on comin' We are dead set on turing the place into the Nation's biggest city park. Why can't we at least allow the Park Service to regulate traffic?

I myself would not enjoy riding a shuttle bus through the cove.We like to stop for photos, hiking ,pinic's, and the backroads. Sure, a shuttle would work for some...but not me. I think traffic would flow better if there were more pull off's for veiwing of bear, deer, etc. That is what causes the jams! In some places, there is NO place to pull off. NO SHUTTLE BUS FOR ME. People know to expect heavy traffic , mostly in October, So pack a lunch and enjoy the ride !!

don't knows if it would work, how's bouts just enforcing the rules and reg's of the park, and simply tell the people, no stopping on the road. if you absolutely need to, pull as far to the right as possible, if the other vehicles can't pass, don't stop. this, i would hope, would eliminate part of the traffic jam. just an idea.

Sorry but I am not in favor of the shuttle bus idea. Why not take the money that would be spent for buses and hire more park personel to encourage people to use the pull offs and to stop harassing the wild life? We have been visiting the Smokies for the last ten years I am amazed at how uninformed some people are. I truly believe many of the congestion problems are caused by a lack of information and visitors being unaware of the impact of their actions.
