Busy Day!

At 4:30pm... it is 82 degrees in Olathe, and 61 degrees in Weston, KS! That is a huge temperature difference. There is a frontal boundary separating the airmasses... and along and north of that front... we have seen strong thunderstorms this afternoon.

The main threat from these thunderstorms has been large hail and damaging winds. We have seen many hail reports of over an inch--and golfball sized hail in some spots. Heavy rain has also been a concern today... mainly North of I-70, where most of the activity has been. As of this writing here are rainfall amounts:
St. Joseph: 2.33"
MCI: .37"
Downtown: .27"
Olathe: NOTHING so far

How frustrating for those of you needing the rain to not get any!

We will see another round of thunderstorm activity on Thursday, and there is a better chance for this rain to reach the southern parts of the viewing area. You can always look at LIVE TRIPLE ACTION DOPPLER to see where the rain is falling NOW.

Stay tuned... we will keep you up to date on the severe weather situation! We track the storms with Live Triple Action Doppler, and our NEWEST storm tracking tool... Sky Tracker!! It is very cool to be able to track the storms from the sky in our helicopter. We have been getting some great views of the storms!

Nice gravity wave at 8Z heading SSW over
TX/NM border, with evidence of jet streak
over E NM in LW IR. It will be interesting to see what that helps "boil" up in the heating of the day. Unfortunately the convective temps
from the 6Z GOES derived soundings is at 86!
PW looks good. Lawrence needs the rain!

Dear Jamie
I was kinda wondering what do you do during the week when you are not out on assignment or filling in for Gary? I don't mean to imply you don't work..ha! Do you help in preparation for the evening weather reports for Gary?
I guess by the fact you are answering this blog demonstrates you are doing something..ha!

HI, RANDY:
Besides doing NBC Action News Saturday & Sunday... I am also at the station three days during the week. One of those days... I am working in the forecast center. On this day, I come in during the morning... meet with Brett Anthony... and look over the latest model data. I may start a few map graphics for Gary, or do other administrative things as needed (Blog entries, included!) :)

The other two days of the week, I am down in the newsroom, working on a story. My stories are usually feature or weather-related... and you can see them Thursdays & Fridays on NBC Action News at 5 or 6pm.

Now when there is the threat of storms (as there is THIS week) I am pretty much helping out in the forecast center all week! AND I cover for any vacations Gary or Brett take! Needless to say, my schedule is always changing... but that keeps it interesting! :)

Thanks for posting!
Jamie

Dear Gary, My deepest sympathy on the death of Windy. I just loved her and I loved to watch her doing the weather and doing tricks. She will be missed. May God comfort you at this time. Take Care Danielle Brown
