Getting Rain...Like Pulling Teeth

Everytime we have a set up for rain something goes wrong, so that either we get nothing, or less than half of what is expected. There was one exception when 2" to 4" of rain fell around May 12th.

We have northwest flow aloft and southeast to east winds at the surface. There are disturbances embedded in the northwest flow. What is supposed to happen is clusters of T-Storms form in the high plains during the afternoon. They then roll east or southeast at night, making it to eastern Kansas and western Missouri the following morning. T-Storms are now forming in the high plains (See the current radar below, 8:15 PM Monday). They will likely move east-southeast all night, but we have a problem around here. Our dewpoint is in the 40s to low 50s. This makes our humidity under 50%. So, as the T-Storms approach our area, they will likely dissipate as they do not have the juice to support them, or these T-Storms will survive and move into Oklahoma.

Now, all of this said, on Wednesday we may get in on some rain as one of the western Plains T-Storm complexes makes it to KC just before it dissipates. The chance of it holding together long enough is now at 50%. We'll be monitoring this closely. Let's hope it rains by Wednesday, because it is looking dry for the first part of the holiday weekend.

Could you please fix the weather video?

Jerry,

We let our web producer know last Friday. I will look into this immediately.

It's 1:00 AM Tuesday morning. The moon is full and ringed with what looks like an iridescent halo...almost like a rainbow all the way around it. Is this somewhat like moisture between the moon and earth making something like a rainbow effect??? Just a layperson's guess, but I wondered.....

Linda,

The thunderstorms to our west sent high level clouds over our sky. The ring around the moon was caused by the light from the moon reflecting off of the clouds.

I noticed that in the two day climatological history from NWS, not only has our dew point in west central Missouri been exceptionally low, but also our pressure has actually been rising. Is the surface flow blocking any moisture from the gulf from making it this far north, thus keeping our dewpoints (and relative humidity) low and not providing fuel for any thunderstorms--or at least rain. Its a good thing we don't have much wind right now or we might be looking at red flag warnings instead of severe weather warnings.

Mike,

You are correct, we would have a fire danger problem with a bit more wind, but keep in mind everything is green right now.

Gary, This lack of rain is very discoraging, I planted warm season native grass on my small farm two years ago and we had that drought.I replanted this spring and here we go again with a drought. Is there relief in sight?

Mike,

I am building a new house down south and there is a pond behind the house and it is so low. So, I know the frustration. We had a lot of rain over a three day stretch around the 12th of May, now will we have another three day stretch. I am expecting it, possibly next week. It is very difficult to explain how we are dry when there is rain all around us. Maybe we will get hit next week.

Gary,
I was wondering, do you have a "feed" from these radio stations when you do the weather reports? I had a hard time seeing you running from station to station.

Randy
Pomona, Ks

Randy,

Both stations are at the same location. I have a Forecast Center at my home and we have it set up so I just do both radio stations from that location.
