A nice break from the heat!
Was this morning's rain a surprise? Not really. Last night at 10 PM we clearly showed the potential for a stormy start to Tuesday. And, it happened. I love it. A break from the heat and it is now two days in a row below 90 degrees. The heaviest rain fell from near Harrisonville, crossing the stateline to south of Paola and west from there to Emporia. Only light rain fell over most of the Kansas City metro area, but Lawrence had over 1/2 inch which was a nice soaking for them. Below is the rainfall totals for today's storm (estimated by NEXRAD).

The heat wave is still in the forecast and we still see about 4 days in a row of near 100 degrees or perhaps a bit higher. Then, there is a strong indication of the ridge aloft breaking down and a cold front moving in by mid next week bringing some chance of rain and cooler weather. Look below at the surface forecast for 216 hours, or one week from Thursday.

All that Rain and clkouds kept the temps down today but look. With the upcoming heat and all this rain in which some areas got over 2 inches will combine to raise up the Comfort index. Just thinking could the index reach 107 to maybe 115 ?
Steve
STEVE:
We have an upper ridge building into the area over the next several days. This will allow the hottest air of the summer to move into the Kansas City area. Our dew points are also forecasted to be pretty high... (in the lower to mid 70s). That could make for heat indicies over 105... pretty steamy... not to mention dangerous!

Is the high pressure system over the great basin, Utah, etc moving this way? Is that what will bring us the heat? If it is will it cool off in the Denver area?
Ann
ANN:
The ridge over the 4-corners region is heading our way. It will bring us our hottest weather of the year! We will see highs near 100 degrees for several days (maybe even higher!). It's a pretty broad ridge, so Denver will stay hot for awhile yet... but next week there is a chance of showers for both Denver and KC. That might help to cool things off a bit!

you got some rain up there but we did not get any down near Clinton. Is there any more chances for rain?
JOHN:
Great to hear from you! We have recieved a lot of emails from people in the southeastern part of the viewing area who missed out on the rain. Unfortunately, it looks like we will stay dry and HOT for awhile, before our next chance of showers. We might see rain next week... right now it looks like it would be Tuesday. But at this point it is only a 20% chance. Stay tuned!

Gary, is the heat wave coming up going to have a lot of humidity with it? As you know, there is a huge difference between an oven and a sauna. It makes the heat more bearable if there's less humidity. Thanks.
CLAUDIA:
Our dew points will be pretty high over the next few days. They are forecast to be in the mid to upper 70s... and that will feel quite unbearable when combined with temperatures near 100 degrees.
Stay cool!

I have a question. With this cold front moving through why isn't it kicking off severe weather? Our dew points seem to be pretty high, so there's plenty of moisture, and combining that with the clash of the temperatures, usually brings severe weather. What element(s) are we missing?
Becki,
There are various reasons why we didn't get severe weather with today's set up. Most of the lifting and support was north of the frontal zone. The upper level support just wasn't there for this set up.
