Changing pattern

The weather pattern continues to go through a transition. Cold fronts are beginning to get stronger, but the pattern is evolving before our eyes. One thing for sure......it has changed. The areas that have been dry are getting much wetter. Sedalia had nearly 2 inches of rain this morning after over an inch last weekend. Illinois is getting rain over the drought areas. But, I believe this means nothing when it comes to the fall and winter pattern that will set up in a couple of months.

Below is the forecast precipitation from the NAM for the next two days.

I only got 3 hours of sleep last night as the thunderstorms kept redeveloping. It is very difficult for me to sleep during a thunderstorm because I just don't want to miss it. Thunderstorms may fire up again tonight in a similar way to last night, then when the cold front comes through Friday night thunderstorms are likely. It could be a strong line of thunderstorms.

CHAS:
There IS a full moon today! It is the Full Sturgeon Moon! This moon name comes from ancient fishing tribes. Sturgeon, a large fish of the Great Lakes, were caught easily during this month. A few of the tribes also knew it as the Full Red Moon, the Green Corn Moon or the Grain Moon. Strange things are said to happen during a full moon!
Thanks for posting!

Gary,
When will you be discussing your predictions for the fall and winter patterns?

MARLINA:
If you read a few of the most recent blog entries... Gary's theory is that the fall/winter pattern does not set up until October. He will issue his forecast around Nomber 10th!

I am a K-State Extension Master Gardener with Johnson County and we have a huge outdoor Butterfly exhibit at Powell Gardens last weekend and this and I have a request for this weekend's weather forcasting!

The Powell Butterfly Festival continues today through Sunday at Powell Gardens just east of Lone jack. Last weekend the weather in KC was very different from that at Powell. Friday it rained all day here and people assumed it was raining at Powell too, but it was in fact dry until about 4pm at Powell. Just the reverse happened on Saturday.

Could you expand your forcast to the east to include Powell Gardens for the weekend? It seems that the forcasting covers more area to the south and west of KC and not as much detail east of town-or perhaps I'm just needing more detail!

Would it be possible to just mention the forcast for Powell Gardens? It could help us to know whether to move under the eves of the building or stay put out in the grass-(Saturday we were scrambling in heavy lightening, winds and rain to protect our critters and displays). Thanks for any help you can give.

PS-really got a chuckle out of your cell phone-to- microphone weather reporting at the Dog and Jog recently! Marti

Marti,

The weather should calm down early Saturday and by afternoon the sun should come out.

I know we have about month left of summer, but how's this one shaping up so far...hotter than normal (likely not)?, wetter? pretty normal? Seems normal to me overall... But I'm ready for fall!

Mike,

We will work on some statastics soon. Kansas City has been well above average on rainfall for June, July, and August. More later.

I would like to know why you never show weather for Garnett, Ks. I used to watch you on channel 4 and when you moved so did I. I think half the town depends on channel 12 for our weather, but you always show only Mo.. Please show weather a little further south so we can keep on watching.

Barb,

We will include Garnett more often!
