Rita Sunset Picture

Rita Sunset September 2005.jpg

Above, you can see the beautiful sunset taken last Saturday evening by Rick Kimball (one of our weather spotters). The spectacular colors are caused by the sun illuminating the clouds as the sun set below the horizon. What caused these clouds? Hurricane Rita! Rita weakened Saturday morning and as she moved inland clouds spread across our sky during the day. I was anticipating a great "Rita Sunset" and it happened.

Our weather pattern is in major transition and our first strong cold front of the season will likely pass through Wednesday morning. There is a storm over the western part of the nation at about 18,000 feet up. A piece of this storm is breaking off and heading our way. These two features should combine to develop showers and thunderstorms Wednesday by mid to late morning.

I have a question for you. What do you like about our weathercasts and what do you think we could do better? And, what do you want to see in our Action Weather Blog?

I think overall your forecasts are great, you guys are by far the most accurate among the local forecasting teams! I particularly enjoy blog entries where you go into more detail about forecasts than you have time for on the air. Also, if you guys feel like there isn't a lot to talk about in a particular blog, it might be a good opportunity to educate your readers on basic weather terminology and other weather tidbits.

Marlina,

Thank you for the ideas!

I really like how you show the current situation and what will happen in the next day to our weather. I wish you would show more of what to expect 3-4 days away. Talking about storms and where they will go. I like the weather blog the way it is right now. I think it is very informative and worth reading.

Mark,

We will work on getting more details into the mid range weather forecasts.

I would like to see you guys update the blog more often. It seems like it can sometimes go days without an update.

Bryan,

We do try to get to the blog every day. Sometimes it gets crazy around here.

I am not sure whether this is possible to include on the website, but a "current temperature" would be nice to see at a glance...much like you have on the newscast. I appreciate the detail and accuracy of the weathercasts. I think your approach is at a higher "thinking" level than some, yet you're not talking down to the viewers, and you still include the science involved in your work. I think this is a good model for kids to see; it supports science and its application.

Michele,

Great ideas, we will work on it.

Some thoughts at random for you...

Sure would like the weather earlier in the newscast, particulary in the 10 PM slot for us old folks who struggle to make it that late into the night. Sure do miss your 9 PM broadcast.

Would also be nice to see the newscasts in HiDef, as it would certainly make your pictures and graphics pop off the screen.

On the web stuff a self updating/refreshing local radar would be great.

One last comment would be to say Thanks to you and your team for providing such quality forecasts and the web blog for those of us who just like a bit more behind the scenes information.

Bob

Bob,

Thanks for the ideas. I miss the 9 PM newscast too.

My husband and I have noticed on the news that in the background there is an LED sign that keeps saying "Wet August" ... now, we wonder if it has any signifigance or if it is just running a little behind? :)

Anne,

Great observation. We have been shuffling through vacations and we sometimes get lazy. Jeff Penner is changing that right now.

You already have the best weather team and the most accurate forecasts. I'd like to see the weather part of the newscast be a few minutes longer, so you can go into more detail about developing trends. I enjoy the blog and look in often.

This fall and winter, I hope you will post your long-term predictions of weather cycles based on the "Lezak Theory" and compare them with actual cycles as they develop. You only get to do that ocassionally on the air. The blog would be a good place to have a running side-by-side comparison.

David

DAVID:
If we had a few more minutes for weather in the newscast each night, it would be easier to get more on the "Lezak Theory" out there. We will try to use the blog to talk more about the weather pattern as we head into winter. Expect to see more on this during the first week of November! Thanks for posting, and for the nice comments!

I think you all are great and my only suggestion would be to put the previous day's high and low. Last night was our first cool night, but I don't have any idea how low the temp went as sometimes I don't get to watch the evening or 10 pm news and then miss the weather the next morning. I like your teaching info and the pics on your blog. Really great, thanks for your extra work.

EVALYN:
Good suggestions! The low temperature of the day is typically just after sunrise. So if you get to watch the morning show at all... that is usually the day's low. If you miss the morning show and the morning low is *significant*... we may show a "Morning Low's" map during our 5, 6 or 10pm weathercasts.

But most often, we show the "Almanac" with KCI and downtown's high/low for the day!

BUT if you can't watch ANY of the shows... I guess you would come to the website! And low and behold... no Almanac available. I will see what we can do about that. Or at least we might be able to start or end each blog entry with the day's high/low.

Thanks for posting!

It is obvious your team is the most accurate in the KC area... so don't change anything there!

As previous posters have expressed... I, too, would like to see more detailed blog entries. Extended forecasts, more in-depth explanations, etc.

Also, sometimes you reply to a comment with "we'll answer that question tomorrow," but then I never see that topic addressed. You shouldn't tease us if you are not going to follow through! ;) I know you are busy, though!

Keep up the good work!
Sara

Sara,

Thank you for the kind comments and suggestions. And, I am following through. We will work on getting more detail into the blog. I am concerned that "others" may use it to their advantage. This is a competitive business

you guys are simply the best, the thing i enjoy the most is the fact you don't forget that not everyone lives in johnson county kansas.. I'm up here in the sticks in northern missouri, and everyone i know here in trenton likes to watch you guys because your not scared to mention if you think it will rain in northern missouri even if it won't get to kc. that's a huge help for all of us out here in the sticks

Glen - ham radio operator from trenton.

Glen,

We appreciate your support and comments. And, since you keep us updated from Trenton it reminds us as to how important it is to cover everyone who is watching.

Our city's water supply is the Missouri River. If it gets very low, as it has been in danger of doing for the last few years and probably will do even more so this winter, our water supply is in actual jeopardy. Given this, I cannot understand why all of the weather forecasters don't include a regular look at conditions in the upper basin of the Missouri River. Maybe once a week, we ought to be able to get a reading on what if any precipitation has occurred in, and is forecasted for, Montana, North and South Dakota, Nebraska, and the upper Kansas River basin in Wyoming, Nebraska and western Kansas.

Al,

This is a great point, however we rarely talk about it unless the water shortage is becoming serious. Otherwise it really doesn't have as much of an impact if everything is healthy and full.

I suppose I am a bit odd in that I choose which news channel to watch based entirely on the weather team lead. When I moved here two years ago I watched those other channels for several days each and wasn't overly impressed or amused by the weather lead. I then tried Channel 41 on my satellite and the first person I see is Gary Lezak and his dogs. I watched as Gary called the weather "interesting", "weird", or "fascinating". It is great to see someone who is as interested in and loves the dynamic aspects weather as much as I do.

I don't see any problems with your current weathercasts but I do have a few changes that would make the blog better, at least in my opinion.

I think the blog would be more user friendly if you had a way that we could see the title of each day's blog at a glance. Something like the list you have for Blog Archives.

It would also be great if you had a way to mark which blog entry had new comments, instead of me needing to scroll through the monthly list to see how many comments were posted on each one, then remember if that is the same number it was the last time I looked.

I also believe it would help develop a sense of community here if you had a 'forum' area where the readers could discuss weather topics, sing your praises, or really jab you on the rare occasion when you really botch a forecast! Obviously something like that requires a moderator to prevent idiots from posting junk, but I think it would be well worth it.

Putting a photo gallery here where readers could upload pictures would also make me happy. The picture at the top of this entry is awesome, as are many of the other photos you have shown. Imagine how many cool photos you would have if we could upload them on our own for other readers to view.

Finally, having a link section to weather data, the National Weather Service, and any other cool weather related sites would be great. Keep up the good work. You guys rule.

Dave,

Thank you for the wonderful comments, and suggestions for this blog. I think you have a few good ideas and I will print this out and sleep on it tonight.

Gary,
You do an great job with the forecasts so no improvement needed. The only thing I have noticed is during severe weather events the map "bug" on the top of the tv screen can be delayed by several minutes showing the warnings, and sometimes miss then completly. I don't know if it is a problem with reading the warning issue codes. My radar program (grlevel2) missed warnings before because of a code reading issued, I fixed it and it updates immediatly.
Secondly, one of the other stations in town have there p.p. doppler streaming in realtime on their website and think it would be cool to have your radar streaming.

Thanks and keep up the good work!
Jennifer

P.S. I think it would be cool to add a current regional radar/satellite link to your website.

Jennifer,

Thank you for the ideas! Have a great weekend.

I've blogged before and have already told you all how GREAT I think you are. But I just can't tell you enough how I enjoy the weathercasts every morning and night, and appreciate the fact that you by far have the most accurate forecasts. My husband has joked that the other meterologists wait to see your forecast, then adjust theirs accordingly and go on air ha ha ha :-) I can tell how much each of you love your jobs - your excitement about the weather really shows on air. I agree with a couple of the other bloggers that a "current temperature" and an automatic updating detailed radar would be great to have on here. Also, we can never have enough Windy and Stormy, so the more you can have them on the better! I also have a couple of questions. First, I've noticed that Jamie has been covering a lot for Gary and Brett recently. Why is it that Jamie has to cover almost every time they're off, instead of Jeff Penner? Not that Jamie doesn't do a terrific job. But Jeff also does a great job when he's on, and I thought you might want to give poor Jamie a break every now and then!! Especially with her planning a wedding! Second, there is a radar image that Gary shows nightly that has a great deal of red on it, mostly on the eastern and western sides of the country, but not in the middle. What does the red area represent? Keep up the great work, and I also look forward to hearing more about the Lezak theory in the near future!

Koyuki,

I agree with you, but our boss wants Jeff to only fill in on Saturday nights. This is why Jamie fills in all of the time.

The red you are referring to is the sinking air on our watervapor satellite photo. When there is red it means the air is sinking and dry.

Thank you for the wonderful comments. And, Windy and Stormy are doing well.
